I will never forget the day when I won the bicycle race for the third time. It was special for me because I set a new record. But what made it more special was that I had to go through a tough time getting ready for the day.
About three months before the final race something unfortunate happened when I fell off the bicycle during practice and broke my left leg. All I could do was wait for the injuries to heal(愈合). The worry was that the doctors suggested bed rest for at least two months. A close friend of mine who had just recovered from his leg injury warned me that even if I were able to stand on my feet, I wouldn’t be able to ride a bicycle for a few more weeks. It was safe for me to give up because my leg was likely to be injured again during practice or the race.
It was very difficult for me to just stop like this. My father felt bad too. He tried to keep my spirits up during my bed rest. My parents gave me nutritious food to keep me strong. They showed me lots of videos of cycling events to improve my riding skills. Thus, they were preparing me for the day when I returned to the track. The most important thing they taught me was that while there could be a chance of missing the race, never giving up in such a situation was an example of good sportsmanship.
Two months passed quickly. The doctors were amazed at my complete recovery and supported my participation. Gradually, I was walking comfortably and exercising too. I practised as much as I could.
Finally, the big day came. I was a little bit nervous but once I was on the racetrack, the fear had gone. The race began. I tried my best and finally I won the race. The whole stadium was clapping me. This became my most special day.

A.He doubted it. B.He was against it.
C.He was hopeful about it. D.He paid little attention to it.
25.What did the author’s parents do during the two months
A.They taught him how to take chances.
B.They helped him prepare for the next year’s race.
C.They made it possible for him to enter the race.
D.They let him realise the importance of healthy diets.
26.Which of the following can best describe the author
A.Honest. B.Creative.
C.Warm-hearted. D.Strong-minded.
27.What can be the best title for the text
A.My most special day
B.My unfortunate experience
C.A long bed rest after an injury
D.An exciting bicycle race in my school
C
I start my workday early, parking myself in front of my home computer and often forgetting to get up for hours. But one thing I try to do every day is take a ten-minute walk around midday.
Walking at lunchtime is a smart thing to do, a new study finds. This doesn’t seem like news. After all, we’ve known forever that doing exercise is good for us. But as The New York Times points out, those fitness studies typically looked at the effects of exercise plans in the long run. This new study looks at changes that happen more quickly, from one day to the next or even from this hour to the next hour.
For the study, researchers gathered a group of mostly sedentary(惯于久坐的) office workers in the UK. All were out of shape, but otherwise emotionally and physically healthy. Researchers asked them to take 30-minute lunchtime walks, three days a week for 10 weeks. The volunteers were also asked to install apps on their phones so that the researchers could send the volunteers questions after they walked. Then the researchers used those answers to judge how the volunteers were feeling about life and work, and to measure their feelings about everything from stress and tension to motivation.
When the researchers compared the volunteers’ answers on the afternoons when they walked to those on the afternoons when they didn’t walk, there was quite a difference. On the days when they had a lunchtime walk, the volunteers said they felt less stressed, more energetic and more relaxed versus(与……相比) on the days when they didn’t walk.
Unfortunately, the researchers said many of the volunteers didn’t believe they’d be able to continue walking once the study ended, mainly because they were expected to work through their lunch breaks. It’s an understandable response, but a sad one.
28.How does the new study differ from other fitness studies
A.It calls on people to have a walk after lunch.
B.It focuses on the short-term effects of walking.
C.It mainly pays attention to sedentary office workers.
D.It aims at studying the relationship between exercise and health.
29.Why were the volunteers asked to install apps on their phones
A.To record their time spent online.
B.To know how long they walked.
C.To prevent them from getting lost.
D.To respond to the researchers’ questions.
30.What is the finding of the new study
A.Lunchtime walks can soon improve people’s mood.
B.Office workers usually have little time to go for a walk.
C.A sedentary lifestyle is linked to an increased risk of disease.
D.Walking brings more advantages to people than other forms of exercise.
31.What can we infer about the volunteers from the last paragraph
A.They will spend more time walking.
B.Some of them tend to be more outgoing.
C.Most of them will perform better at work.
D.Many of them may stop lunchtime walks due to the pressure of work.
D
New research suggests that even a simple exercise program might help older people with light memory problems. Doctors have long advised patients to do physical activity to help keep their brains healthy. But the U.S. government-supported research marks the longest study of whether exercise makes any difference once memory starts to decline(衰退).
Researchers found around 300 inactive older adults with memory changes called mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (轻度认知障碍). In the research, the participants were divided into two groups and half of them did aerobic exercise, while the rest did stretching and balance movements that raised their heart rates a little. After a year, testing of mental activity showed neither group had worsened, according to lead researcher Laura Baker of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. By comparison, similar MCI patients in another long-term study of brain health—but without exercise—experienced cognitive decline over a year.
Maria Carrillo is the chief scientific officer of the Alzheimer’s Association. She said earlier research found regular physical activity of any kind may reduce damaging inflammation and increase blood flow to the brain. She added that the new study is especially interesting because the pandemic began halfway through the study. That meant the study participants became socially isolated. Social isolation has long been known to increase people’s risk of memory problems.
It is a difficult time for dementia(痴呆) research. Doctors are not sure about prescribing(开处方) a high-priced new drug called Aduhelm. The drug is supposed to be the first to slow the progression of dementia but it is not yet clear if it really helps patients. Researchers reported another drug that works similarly failed in an important study. There is growing urgency to find whether exercise can offer at least some protection. Baker will lead an even larger study of older adults to see if adding exercise to other steps such as a healthy diet, brain games and social activities can reduce the risk of dementia.
32.What does the new study focus on
A.Ways to slow the aging process.
B.Effective medicines for elders with MCI.
C.The influence of exercise on elders’ memory.
D.The causes of declining memory in older adults.
33.In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design
A.The diet plan. B.The exercise type.
C.The professional background. D.Previous physical condition.
34.What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.The outbreak of the pandemic.
B.The reduction of damaging inflammation.
C.The increase in memory problems.
D.Social isolation.
35.What will Baker do next according to the text
A.Find out how to lower the price of Aduhelm.
B.Develop a new drug to help patients with brain diseases.
C.Organize a wide variety of social activities for older people.
D.Conduct further research on how to reduce the risk of dementia.

What if there was a way to get more out of each day While we all have the same 24 hours, how we use that time influences what we can achieve. Recent research suggests that one way to pack more into your day is to synchronize(使同步) your biological clock with your daily timetable. By doing certain things when you are most active and energetic, you might be able to improve your productivity.
36 This works much like a program regulating the timing of many biological functions ranging from when you sleep to when you wake. You’ve probably noticed that there are certain times during the day when you feel more energetic. 37 Research has shown however, that your body clock is responsible for more than just your sleep-wake cycle. For instance, you may want to adjust your timetable to make the most of your mental powers.
38 Studies suggest that cognitive(认知的) abilities tend to be at their highest level during the late morning hours, so you might want to deal with those mentally demanding activities before lunch. 39 This is why you might find yourself struggling to focus on those work meetings after lunch.
If you are working on some sort of creative task, it might be a bit different. In a study examining how the time of day influences problem solving, researchers had participants solve analytical(分析性的) problems during times when they were either at their mental best or at less effective times of tiredness. 40 Because the mind is more likely to wander(stop focusing on something) when we are tired, it seems that it can lead people to think in more innovative(创新的) ways.
A.At other times, you might feel tired.
B.You are probably at your sharpest in the morning.
C.Knowing this might help you adjust your own timetable.
D.Your biological clock controls a great deal of how you function.
E.Experts also suggest that attention levels weaken following meals.
F.Changing your biological clock might not be easy, but it could be beneficial.
G.They found that people tend to do their best creative thinking when they are tired.

“Mom, you know how fast I am! Then why should I waste my time running Only I will win;no one else will win!” shouted Jim. “Jim, you may be right but talent without hard work is not good at all. This laziness of yours will cost you dearly,” his mother warned him. Jim just laughed and shrugged(耸肩) his shoulders. He was so confident that he would win the prize as no one else in his class was as fast as he was!
Tim, a classmate of Jim was also participating in the running race. He was not a fast runner. However, he was very devoted and practiced till late at night and had developed great endurance(耐力) and willpower(意志力) to win the race.

Suddenly, Jim went ahead of Tim. The crowd cheered for him. Soon, it was clear that Jim was going to beat Tim. But, when they were just a few metres away from the finishing line, Tim surprisingly picked up speed and ran ahead of Jim and reached the finishing line. Tim surprised everyone with his brilliant performance. He proudly received the prize and the money.
Jim’s mother came to Tim and praised him for his hard work. She said, “You deserve it for your devotion and effort!” “Thanks!” Tim replied with an open smile and walked happily with his prize. Jim hung his head in shame. His mother turned toward him and said, “Look, Jim, talent without hard work is simply useless. That boy put in effort and got rewarded for his hard work. Hard work is the only way to success.” Now Jim understood the importance of hard work. This incident brought about a major change in his life.
