Ever since I can remember my mom has always been growing things or talking about growing things. Unfortunately, I don t exactly share her green thumb skills. She tells me it s because I don t give the plants the love they deserve. I won t lie—that stings a little bit!
After a few crazy years of working my way through college and then the pandemic(大流行病), I felt I had this disconnection from my mom and her gardening. As a kid, I spent a lot of time with her in her garden. And those were some of the happiest moments of our lives. For Mother s Day this year, I decided to get back in the garden to spend some quality time with her. Though we weren t able to plant everything we wanted to, due to the weather, we had a good time.
My mom always fertilizes(施肥于) her garden with natural fertilizers. She doesn t like using chemicals. It s not good for pollinators(传粉者) and the chemicals can run off into the nearby river. Each year she designs her garden differently so that each section of the garden can have a variety of vegetables and later on, nutrients are added to the soil. “Where did you learn all of this ” I asked her. Growing up I was always under the impression that my mom just knew everything. It was not a wrong assumption, but I was curious. “Wisconsin Public Radio!” she said. “Each Friday it has Garden Talk where Larry Meiller interviews gardening experts about planting in Wisconsin.”
Besides a garden, my mom also grew a prairie, filled with tons of native flowers of Wisconsin, a pollinator paradise(乐园). This year, she planted sunflowers, purple coneflowers, and a variety of other wildflowers to help out the pollinators in the yard and give her garden the best chance to thrive(繁荣). At the end of the day, I was glad to have gotten my hands dirty with my mom. I learned a lot, and I felt that I had gotten closer to her.
24.What does the underlined word “stings” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Spreads. B.Differs. C.Attracts. D.Hurts.
25.What did the author do this Mother s Day
A.She studied hard for her college examinations.
B.She worked together with her mom in her garden.
C.She learned about everything her mom had planted.
D.She took care of her mom suffering from the pandemic.
26.Why does the author s mom design her garden differently every year
A.To make the garden more beautiful.
B.To discover what works best for it.
C.To increase the nutrient content of the soil.
D.To keep gardening fresh and exciting for her.
27.How did the author s mom learn gardening
A.By hosting a show. B.By attending courses.
C.By talking with experts. D.By listening to the radio.
C
The middle child, I think, is now an “endangered species”. According to a study, in 1976, 65 percent of mothers aged between 40 and 44 had three or more children. Today, nearly two-thirds of women with children have only one or two. Middle children will soon be the fewest.
As a middle child, I am disappointed at the potential disappearance of middle children. I m the middle of three—two boys, one girl—so I m what s sometimes regarded as a “classic middle child”.
Being a middle child is not something you are eager for. As one middle child said to me, “There is a thing called middle-child syndrome(综合征). I certainly was always aware that the middle was not a position to be admired, even as I came to see typical middle-child features in myself. Middle children are natural mediators(和事佬); I avoid disagreements and habitually act as the family peace-maker. Middle children tend to be private but also long for love; I keep to myself but do not exactly hate attention.”
According to studies, middle children traditionally receive less economic and emotional support from their parents. They also typically have less close relationships with their mothers and fathers compared with other brothers or sisters, so they tend to have more friends to fill the feelings gap.
In a study conducted by the City College of New York in which participants were asked to choose words they associate with the first, last, and middle kids, positive words such as “caring” and “ambitious” were cited concerning all three birth orders. Only middle kids, however, were described with such negative terms as “overlooked” and “confused”. More importantly, middle kids may be many things but they were the only birth order with which no one connected the term “overindulged”. It is true: their parents don t allow them to do or have whatever they want, especially when they are old enough, and they don t ask for anything either even if they are eager to own it occasionally.
28.Why does the author mention the study in Paragraph 1
A.To inform a definition. B.To introduce the topic.
C.To make a comparison. D.To support his opinion.
29.What can we learn about “middle-child syndrome”
A.It is dangerous for middle kids to suffer from it.
B.It clearly shows the typical features of middle kids.
C.It is what non-middle kids admire and wish for.
D.It is the result of the unsuccessful parenting style.
30.Who is an overindulged kid according to Paragraph 5
A.John, 3, asking his mother to dress him.
B.Mary, 8, busy focusing on her preference.
C.Paul, 12, unwilling to have breakfast by himself.
D.Nancy, 17, afraid to challenge the math problems.
31.What s the author s opinion about middle children according to the passage
A.They are always in low spirits.
B.They stress the protection of privacy.
C.They are ignored but independent.
D.They support the family economically.
D
Researchers recently studied 3,000 middle school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in, fly-out” parents might influence the health of their children.
A higher percentage(比例) of teenagers who experienced the long absence of a parent had emotional(情感的) or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don t have to be home all the time to be present in their children s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted(盆栽的) plant. Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy one another s company(陪伴) without the need to talk.
In fact, many years of research suggest that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities. Perhaps teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady(稳定的) presence will give them a great day.
32.What did the study find about the 618 teens
A.They had more dinners with their parents.
B.They were more prepared to help themselves.
C.They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings.
D.They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
33.What is the author s attitude to her friend s practice
A.She doubts it.
B.She supports it.
C.She is worried about it.
D.She cares little about it.
34.What does the earlier research say about young kids according to Paragraph 4
A.They prefer to play with babies.
B.They want more freedom from parents.
C.They pay attention to parents behavior.
D.They show more interest in new activities.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Teens want potted plant parents
B.Your kids still need conversation
C.Quiet families raise healthier teenagers
D.Parents know little about today s teenagers
When children are younger, we tell them they re good at everything. 36 . So how can parents encourage their children to discover their strengths and weaknesses and build self-awareness(自我意识)
 37
Experts recommend building a connection by showing how you manage challenging situations and sharing your feelings with children instead of hiding them. No matter how much we try to protect our children from the ugly parts of our lives, they very well get used to what s happening.
Talk about weaknesses
For all the talk about praising our children too much or not enough, it has become a no-no for adults and children to talk about weaknesses. 38 . The researchers say recognizing that we need improvement shows children how different we are and helps them realize their strengths. Try using members of your family as an example: “Dad is great at fixing things that break but not so great at making dinner.”
Manage their expectations
There s always a seed of doubt whenever we start learning anything new or developing a skill, but criticism(批评) can cause inactivity to stay long. 39 . It leaves kids to think they do something wrong rather than learning from the experience.
A clinical psychologist recommends parents to help by setting manageable goals to build their children s confidence: “It s not lowering our standards, but making our expectations easier to come true.”
Get them thinking about their thinking
40 . They can or can t do something. They hardly give themselves little room to change their thinking on that. Teaching them to take a moment to consider how they face challenges and criticism helps them to become more independent and free and avoid being inactive.
A.Set the example
B.Connect, get a plan and put it into action
C.This feeling can come from high expectations
D.Children often reflect on strengths and weaknesses in two ways
E.But as they age, kids are challenged more and might become anxious
F.When children get discouraged, try asking them questions that are open-ended
G.Agreeing and discussing what we are not good at can be just as important as what we are

When Lisa was a little girl, she learned an important lesson from her father. Her father told her that when facing a problem, she should never give up and try another solution. In the following years, Lisa always remembered her father s words.
When Lisa was little, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. It was always her dream. But it was not an easy road. After leaving college, Lisa went to Paris with her designs in order to make her dream come true. In Paris, she tried to talk to famous designers and show them some of her designs, but none of them showed any interest.
Though Lisa was discouraged, she didn t give up. One day, at a friend s party, she was introduced to a young lady who was dressed in a beautiful knitted(针织的) sweater. It wasn t a fancy color, but it did have very special stitches(针法). Lisa asked that lady if she knitted it herself. She said it was a work of a lady in Paris.
Lisa really loved the special stitches and wanted to include them in her designs. And then Lisa had an even braver idea. “Why not own a fashion store of my own That way, I could design, make and sell my own clothes,” she thought. So she decided to begin with that kind of sweater.
Lisa s friend introduced her to Madam Dean who knitted that sweater. The lady was from Armenia and she learned to knit that kind of sweater from people in her country.
Lisa drew a picture of a sweater and asked if Madam Dean could knit the sweater for her. Madam Dean agreed. One week later, Lisa got the sweater. The following day after Lisa received it, she wore it to a party in the fashion industry.
Lisa was very nervous but she was lucky. Not long after the party began, her sweater drew the attention of a store owner from New York. She wanted to order 40 such sweaters in two weeks. Lisa was really happy and accepted the order.

根据第一段中的“618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home”和第二段第一句可知,关于这618名青少年,研究发现他们更有可能有情绪问题。
故选A。

One possible version:
Dear Jim,
I m sorry to hear you are upset about the argument between you and your parents. To be honest, this time it is your fault for being so addicted to the mobile phone.
Attractive as mobile phones are, they do take up too much of your time, which does harm to your health and study. Thus, it is advisable to focus more on study and reduce the time spent on the mobile phone. Besides, having an honest conversation calmly can help you to improve the relationship between you and your parents.
I sincerely hope that you can go through it and enjoy your high school life.
Yours,
Li Hua
