I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don t remember Mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing Mom say, “I can t believe what s printed in the newspaper this morning,”made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When Mom said, “The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A s on my tests. Occasionally, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn t enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Yet, now that I m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax.
We re taught to read because it s necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is a vital part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.
24.Why did the author want to grab the newspaper out of Mom s hands

D.She couldn t help but stop Mom from reading.
25.According to Paragraph 3, what does the author s reading of road signs indicate
A.Her unique way to locate herself.
B.Her eagerness to develop her reading ability.
C.Her effort to remind Mom to obey traffic rules.
D.Her growing desire to know the world around her.
26.What does the author take novel reading as
A.A way to explore a fantasy land.
B.A way to develop a passion for learning.
C.A way to learn about the adult community.
D.A way to get away from a confusing world.
27.What could be the best title for the passage
A.The Magic of Reading B.The Pleasure of Reading

Larks are most likely to be healthy, wealthy and wise, according to an old saying.
But those who early go to bed and rise do not always have the upper hand, researchers say. They have found that night owls are generally brighter and wealthier than those who are able to get up early in the morning.
Experts from the Complutense University of Madrid carried out research on around 1,000 teenagers and found that those who preferred to stay up late had the kind of intelligence associated with honorable jobs and higher incomes. “Larks” or “morning people”, however, often acquired better exam results, possibly because lessons are given at the wrong time of a day for night owls. The researchers examined the habits and body clocks of the youngsters to determine whether they liked to stay up late and sleep in, or preferred to go to bed early and were at their peak in the morning. School performance and inductive intelligence, or problem solving, were measured and academic grades in the major subjects were also taken into account. The results showed that evening types scored higher than morning types on inductive reasoning, which has been shown to be a good estimate of general intelligence and a strong indicator of academic performance. They also had a greater capacity to think conceptually as well as analytically. Such abilities have been linked to innovative thinking, more admirable occupations and better incomes.
Famous night owls include Trump, Obama, Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill, Keith Richards and Elvis Presley. George W. Bush, who is regularly in bed by 10 p.m., Thomas Edison, Napoleon, Condoleezza Rice, who woke at 4:30 a.m., and Ernest Hemingway are among those known as larks. Jim Horne, a professor of psychophysiology at Loughborough University, said, “Evening types tend to be the more active and more creative types such as the poets, artists and inventors, while the morning types are good at deduction, as is often the case with civil servants and accountants.” A previous study of the US Air Force recruits found that evening types were much better at thinking to solve problems than larks.
28.What does the word “lark” mean in the text
A.A bird of prey that flies in the morning.
B.A bird of prey that is a symbol of wisdom.
C.A kind of person who goes to bed early and wakes up early.
D.A kind of person who has honorable jobs and higher incomes.
29.What characteristics do night owls have
A.Night owls are much healthier, wealthier and wiser.
B.Night owls are not good at inductive reasoning.
C.Night owls stay up late and wake up early in the morning.
D.Night owls are expert in analytical and innovative thinking.
30.From the passage, what can we infer
A.The early bird catches the worm.
B.Morning types have a better tendency to do some creative jobs.
C.Night owls can do better in the examinations if lessons are given in the right time.
D.Trump, Winston Churchill and George W. Bush are models of night owls.
31.According to the writer, what kind of job is an evening type likely to do in the future
A.A fashion designer. B.A social worker.
C.An accountant. D.A government employee.

A new study, a project of the researchers from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, finds that a fitness tracker(健康追踪器) probably does not help with weight loss.
The trackers are designed to record your physical activity. They are usually worn around the wrist(手腕), where they record a person s heart rate. The research team looked at two groups of people. The first wore a fitness tracker and took part in health consultation(咨询) with experts for the best weight-loss plan. The researchers compared this group with people who only got health consultation.
The study found that those only speaking with the health experts lost nearly 6 kilograms, but those using a fitness tracker lost only 3.5 kilograms. John Jakicic, the lead researcher, questioned the use of these trackers for weight loss.
The study involved 470 people aged between 18 and 35. Some of them were overweight, while others were considered obese(肥胖的). Over three fourths of them were women. All were told to increase physical activity and go on a low-calorie diet. They had their weight measured once every six months. After six months, researchers divided the group into two parts: one continued with monthly consulting, while members of the other group were given a fitness tracker. Eighteen months later, both groups showed great improvements in fitness, physical activity and diet, with no big difference between groups. However, when it came to losing weight, the people who only spoke with experts lost nearly twice as much weight.
Jakicic said, “The study s findings are important because effective long-term treatments are needed to deal with America s obesity.” “More information is needed,” he added, “to learn how to best use these trackers to help adults who want to lose weight.”
32.What were both groups of people in the study asked to do
A.Go on a high-calorie diet.
B.Wear a fitness tracker.
C.Consult experts.
D.Record their heart rates.
33.What can we infer about the study mentioned in the text
A.The study went on for about two years.
B.More than 120 men took part in the study.
C.Health consulting helps lose almost 6 kilograms.
D.There are great differences in health between both groups.
34.Why did Jakicic think the findings were important
A.Wearing fitness trackers hardly helps people lose weight.
B.Physical activity and diet have no effect on weight loss.
C.Dealing with obesity needs effective long-term treatments.
D.Wearing a fitness tracker is useful for keeping slim.
35.What s the purpose of the text
A.To describe how the researchers carried out the study.
B.To show regular consulting for weight control is necessary.
C.To persuade readers to wear fitness trackers for weight control.
D.To warn that women are more likely to suffer from weight problems.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was so heartbreaking for Devan Bonagura to see 81-year-old Nola Carpenter sitting in the break room of a supermarket where she works. In the short video he shared, the woman appears tired and stares at the floor as if thinking of something. The video finally went popular, earning over 30 million views and causing a movement that would change Carpenter s life.
It is widely known that retail(零售) workers are heroes. They put up with long hours and angry customers, among other things. This work is challenging for young people and able-bodied people, so it can really be more difficult for the old. That s why Bonagura posted the video.
He posted the short video of her with the message “Life shouldn t be this hard...” and the caption(字幕) “I feel bad”. At last, his followers asked him to find a way to support this woman, and it inspired him to open a GoFundMe campaign titled “Let s help Carpenter retire(退休)”. The idea was to support Carpenter so that she could retire early.
Although the goal was just $10,000, 24 hours later over $100,000 had been collected. Two days later, Bonagura met up with Carpenter and told her how he had posted a video of her and how people had come together to help her. “They see that you re a very hard worker,” the social media platform told the woman. “We are all super proud of you, and we want to offer you the $110,000 that has been raised for you.” “I ll accept it, but I still have to work until I get the other $60,000 to pay for the house,” she explained. “The house is what s holding me at work.” She then talked about her daily life and how she struggled to help those in need.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Knowing why Carpenter works so hard at this age, everyone was moved.

Reaching her goal, Carpenter won t retire until the New Year.

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Recently our class has had a heated discussion about whether beauty contests should be held among teenagers.
Some students hold the opinion that it is just human nature to love beauty, and beauty contests provide a stage for people to show their beauty. Beauty contests,in their opinion, can help improve teenagers taste. For example, they can help them choose the right clothes for important occasions. However, other students are afraid that most beauty contests focus on people s appearances, which causes teenagers to pursue appearances blindly. Moreover, many beauty contests are too commercialized and it is a waste of time taking part in the contests.
In my opinion, a good appearance isn t the key to success and we should focus more on inner beauty.

The house will make it convenient for her to offer shelter when she meets homeless people. Every day, she eats some cheap vegetables to save some money. She hasn t bought clothes for a long time. In a word, she is trying to pay for the new house.
Reaching her goal, Carpenter won t retire until the New Year. “I m going to help them out in the holidays, and after that, it ll be good to stay at home,” said Carpenter when interviewed.
