When my daughter was in primary school, she brought home four small twigs (嫩枝) from school to plant. None of them looked very strong, but with hope for the future, I planted them somewhere in our backyard that had enough sunlight. Over the years, because of the poor soil, three of them died. Only one survived.
It grew crooked (弯弯曲曲的) and very slowly. It looked more like a fat bush than a tree. Later, I noticed that it was starting to die. Leaves on the lower branches all fell. Only the top third of the tree was still green. I did my best to save it by feeding it a lot of fertilizer (肥料), but it didn’t work.
Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I was wondering if it would be better to just cut it down. It would make the yard look cleaner. As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed something moving within the leaves. It was a bird patiently building a nest in the top branches. I smiled when I looked at it. I thought maybe this old tree was still useful. It might not be healthy or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a home.
This tree tells me that all of our lives have a purpose (目标). It doesn’t matter if we are young and strong or old and sick. Until our last moment, we have things to do, love to give, and joy to share. We can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.

( )3.What may the writer do with the tree later
A. She may cut it down. B. She may build more nests on it.
C. She may leave it as it is. D. She may cut some twigs from it to plant them.
( )4.We can learn from the story that _______.
every living thing has a purpose
B. we should care more about the Earth
C. we should work hard until the last moment
D. it’s time to think about the meaning of our lives
B
People throw away their used face masks across streets, beaches and rivers around the world. It is not only bad for our environment(环境) but also dangerous to the wildlife. Animals may consider(认为) the waste as food or a new place to live. As a result, they can easily hurt themselves or even lose their lives.
Last summer, a seagull(海鸥) was found in the street in the UK. The bird’s legs were entangled(被缠住的) in a face mask and got hurt. Before people saved it, it was like that for over a week.
There are many sad things like this all over the world. In the hills outside. Malaysia’s capital, people saw a monkey eating a face mask. It was really dangerous. The monkey’s stomach may be full of pieces of face masks and it could make him lose his life.
The used face masks are also bad for the sea animals’ lives. Last year, more than 1.5 billion masks made their way into the world’s sea. Larger animals, like sea turtles(海龟), bigger fish and sea birds, are the first ones that have to face the problem. And scientists are concerned that the whole food chain(食物链) will be in danger.
“When those masks come into the environment, they become smaller and smaller. These small parts will finally go into the bodies from the smallest animals to the largest animals.” they say.
While face masks keep us safe, we don’t want them to be a killer of the animals who share our earth.
( )5.What did the seagull and the monkey have in common(共同的)
A.They both had nothing to eat.
B.People took them home at last.
C.They were both in danger because of the face mask.
D.They both thought the face mask a new place to live.

( )8.What is the purpose(目的) of the passage
A.To tell readers that lots of animals are in danger.
