Robot guide dogs may soon become available (可获得的) to more of the 17 million people with eye problems in China thanks to researchers who achieved great success using an artificial intelligence (AI) language model.
They have developed AI guide dogs that can provide help in situations such as crossing streets, taking lifts and navigating (导航) indoors without having to be connected to the Internet. It is a big step in the application of AI—intelligent machines with physical forms that can carry out instructions or make decisions in real time.
Though in recent years, there have been some electronic navigation aids, such as electronic navigation glasses and electronic guide dogs, they cannot talk with people or fully understand human instructions. In fact, they can only carry out tasks according to programs set ahead of time, so they are just cold machines. That’s not enough.
People with eye problems face quite a lot of challenges in daily lives, including navigation difficulties and safety problems. The research makes it possible to provide better guidance services for them, especially in terms of emotional support. In addition, smart guide dogs using the language model can offer them more convenient and safe navigation, practically improving their quality of life.
