The black-winged stilt (黑翅长脚鹬) is a medium-sized bird of about 40 cm in length. The bird has a long, thin black bill (鸟喙) and red legs. Because of the long and thin legs, it is able to cross waters easily. It is mainly white, with black wings on females and different numbers of black feathers over the head in males. The difference in colors makes this bird quite special and can be seen easily.
The stilt is commonly found in wetlands throughout Shenzhen, especially in the Shenzhen Bay area, where it travels across waters to search for food and build homes. As it gets used to living in both natural and man-made wetlands, it is in peace with Shenzhen’s ecosystems (生态系统). The bird mainly feeds on insects and small fish. With its long legs and bill, it can get into the water or other places to catch what it wants easily.
During the breeding (繁殖) season, especially between spring and summer, pairs build their home on the ground or near the water. Females lay a group of about six eggs and two thirds of them survive. Shortly after that, the baby birds can walk and feed themselves. The birds travel regularly in search of proper breeding and wintering areas. In Shenzhen, some may stay through the year while others move to warmer areas during winter.
The black-winged stilt plays an important role in our ecosystems. It improves the balance of the environment by controlling populations of insects and small fish, helping to keep wetlands in order and aiding the growth of plants.

Different lakes have different colors. According to a recent study, around one-third of the world’s lakes are blue. However, global warming may turn them to green or even brown.
Xiao Yang from a university in the US and his team looked at the color of over 85,000 lakes from 2013 to 2020. They found that lakes in places with cooler summer air temperatures -below19℃-were more likely to be blue than lakes in places with warmer summers.
The study said that water absorbs the long wavelengths(波长) from the sunlight, such as red, orange, and yellow. They leave behind the shorter ones, making a lake look green and blue. So the cleaner the water is, the bluer it looks.
In warmer lakes, algae(水藻) and phytoplankton(浮游植物) grow easily. Their colors are green and even brown. They give the lake a different color. If the temperature goes on to rise because of climate change, the study said that one in ten blue lakes might change color.
Humans get their drinking water from lakes, streams and ground water. As lakes become greener, people may lose lots of clean water. Because of this, treating the water of such lakes becomes more expensive.
At the same time, some people consider blue lakes as a place for their hearts to rest from busy daily life. As these blue lakes disappear, they may feel sad.
For lake animals, the development of algae and phytoplankton in greener lakes can provide more food. However, more algae and phytoplankton mean less oxygen for the lake animals, and this may kill them.
Lake water is important to all living things...

When I was six, I made my first drawing: a picture of a snake, but in the shape of a hat. I showed it to adults and I asked them if they were afraid of my drawing. Surprisingly, they answered, “Afraid Why should anyone be afraid of a hat ”
In the picture, the snake was digesting (消化) an elephant. But because the adults could not understand it, I made another drawing to help them: I drew the inside of the big snake so that the adults could see the elephant clearly. They always need children to explain things to them.
However, the adults advised me to put away my drawings of the big snake and learn geography, history and math. Adults never understood anything by themselves and children were not always happy to explain things to them. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up my dream of becoming a painter. I was unhappy about the failure of my two drawings. So I chose to fly a plane instead and it was true that geography was very useful. If one gets lost at night, such skills are very useful.
In my life, I have met many such people. They only seem to care about adult things. But every time I met an adult who looked clear-sighted to me, I always tried to show him my first picture. But the answer will remain “This is a hat.”
Then I would never talk to that person about the big snake. I would bring myself down to his level and talk about news or other things. The adult would feel greatly pleased to have met a man like me. So I lived my life alone. I did not really want to talk to anyone until I met the little prince ...
