(22-23八年级下·广东广州·期末)World’s oldest land animal
Jonathan, a turtle on the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, turned 190 years old. This makes him the world’s oldest living land animal.
In fact, Jonathan is probably older than 190. In 1882, Sir William Grey-Wilson, governor of the island, got him as a gift. At that time, Jonathan was already an adult.
Since it takes more than 50 years for a turtle to become an adult, animal experts say Jonathan must have been born before 1832. So his birthday was set on December 4th, 1832.
In 1890, Sir Grey-Wilson became the governor of this island. He took Jonathan with him to live at the governor’s home, called Plantation House. Since then, over 30 other governors have come and gone from Plantation House. But Jonathan has remained. And now he shares his home with three other turtles.
It is hard to understand how much the world has changed in the past 190 years. Jonathan was born before the Internet, computers, TVs, radios, telephones or light bulbs. He is older than the first picture. He was born before global warming began and before plastic was invented.
But Jonathan’s interests do not change. He loves sleeping and eating. He likes to warm himself by sleeping in the sun. When the weather gets cold, he digs himself into grass to keep warm.
Though Jonathan is still very active, he does have some health problems. He is blind and cannot smell, so people need to feed him by hand. But he can hear well. And he eats a lot. He eats a lot of vegetables and fruits, including lettuce, cabbage and carrots, as well as apples and bananas.
Scientists have even studied Jonathan to get health benefits from his diet and cells. His cells do not mutate (突变) the same way human cells do. Scientists also hope to find some secrets to fighting cancer in humans.
1.Why did the writer list some inventions in Paragraph 5
A.To show Jonathan’s long life. B.To tell the development of the society.
C.To express the concern of global warming. D.To share Jonathan’s interesting life.
2.Which of the followings is NOT TRUE
A.Jonathan has lived in Plantation House with over 30 other governors.
B.There are four turtles in Plantation House now.
C.Jonathan likes to sleep in the sun to keep warm.
D.Jonathan digs himself into grass to get cold.
3.Why do people need to feed Jonathan by hand
A.Because he is very active. B.Because he is blind and can’t smell.
C.Because he is a turtle of the governor. D.Because he is too old to eat by himself.
4.What’s the correct order of the following events according to the passage
①Jonathan lives together with three other turtles.
②Someone sent Jonathan to Grey-Wilson as a gift.
③Jonathan was born on an island in the South Atlantic.
④Jonathan moved to Plantation House with Grey-Wilson.
⑤More than 30 governors came and gone from Plantation House.

How do we use strong body language to make us seem powerful while making a speech Vanessa, who is a researcher of human behavior once said that Tony the Tiger has some of the best body language we can learn from. The picture is Tony the Tiger’s typical pose on every cereal box across America.
Researchers have found that the broader we stand, the more powerful we feel. So by examining Tony’s pose, we see that he is standing very broadly with his feet. If you look closer, you’ll see he is pointing upwards, as if he were saying, “I am going up” or “________”.
If you look at Tony again, you can see his smile lines reach almost all the way up to his eyes. His smile is not only open, but it is hugely expressive. This smile design makes Tony look incredibly happy, excited and optimistic.
Tony the Tiger always faces forward. When we are talking with people face to face, we are showing a sign of respect. So if you look at the cereal box, you may feel like Tony is paying attention to you and this is exactly what kids like to see.
An interesting study found that 57 out of the 86 cereal boxes had characters looking down. Imagine a child is walking around in the supermarket, hand-in-hand with his or her mom. The small child is looking up at all the
boxes and they see the cereal characters looking down at them. When the child looks up and makes eye contact with the box, this attracts the child’s attention to that character. Making eye contact is great because it can increase feelings of love and interest!
Great body language during the speech draws the audience’s attention to your points, and helps you connect with your listeners and build up a good relationship. Next time you are going to speak in public, just think about Tony, the Tiger!

(22-23八年级下·广东广州·期末)Real Dogs VS Robot Dogs
Students in our class have different opinions on keeping real dogs or robot dogs. Here are some of their ideas. I like keeping real pet dogs because loneliness is terrible, and I need a pet around. Whenever I look after my dog Rocky, I feel better. And my grandma benefits from taking care of it. Rocky is furry and soft, which gives us a natural sense of closeness. When I enter the front door after school every day, it is usually the first to greet me with its tail wagging. Sometimes, it will run in circles around me to get my attention, and it will roll over so that I can pet its tummy. Tim @Tim I don’t agree to keep a real dog. Keeping robot dogs is wonderful! They don’t lose hair or eat things the
way real dogs do. They won’t bite or scratch you. They won’t sharpen their claws on your new sofa, or chew the leg off of the dining room table. What’s more, your robot dogs won’t have to go to the vet or die, leaving you in a state of emotional heartbreak. I enjoy living with my robot dog. Jack So do I. Nowadays, the burden of keeping a real dog is quite heavy. You have to bathe it, buy clothes, and see a vet when it is sick, maybe at least two or three thousand yuan a year. In addition to paying money, there is also a burden of time and energy. Some robot dogs can do many things: they can herd sheep, walk around the fields, open doors, do some dangerous and dirty jobs instead of people and so on. @Jack Lucy I think both of them are fantastic. It’s true that you never have to worry about giving your robot dogs water or food. They can wag their tails, play balls, move their ears back and forth and blink eyes. Robot dogs can also understand different words, such as “sit”, “stay”, and “come”. If you want a pet dog, but worry about taking care of it, then a robot dog will be a good choice. Now robot dogs can “learn” and remember their daily experiences. However, real dogs can play with people and make them happy. They can also interact with their owners, but robot dogs just can’t do this yet. Sam
13.Why does Tim like to keep real dogs
A.To help people do many things. B.To take care of the elderly people.

A.They can bite and bark at strangers. B.Both of them can wag tails and blink eyes.

15.Where may you see their conversations
A.In a magazine. B.In a comic strip. C.On the Internet. D.In a science fiction.
16.Which of the following descriptions is right
A.Tim and Lucy share the same opinion.
B.Keeping real dogs is acceptable for Sam.
C.Jack thinks it is expensive to keep a real dog.
D.Robot dogs can understand all their owners’ words.

Hua Tuo was a famous doctor in Eastern Han Dynasty. He was born in today’s Anhui Province. His father died when Hua was only seven. Then, he lived a poor life with his mother. In order to enable her son to have a better career, the mother sent young Hua to study medicine from a local doctor. The doctor was impressed by the boy’s hard work and talent, so he decided to teach him all the skills he knew. Soon, Hua became an expert in medicine.

(22-23八年级下·广东广州·期末)Some people believe that humans could live on the planet Mars by the year 2100. Our own planet, the Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted because of the rapid increase in population. It is hoped that people could start all over again and build a better world on Mars. Here is what life could be like there.
At present, our spacecrafts are too slow to carry large numbers of passengers to Mars—it would take months. With the development of technology, by the year 2100, the journey might only take about 20 minutes in
spacecrafts that travel at the speed of light! However, the spacecrafts would travel so fast that the journey to Mars might be quite uncomfortable. Many people would feel ill.
Humans cannot survive without water, oxygen or food. So far, nobody knows whether there would be enough water or oxygen on Mars for people there. Moreover, scientists are not sure whether plants could grow on Mars. Food would most probably be in the form of pills and would not be so tasty.
Gravity could be another problem. The gravity on Mars is only about three-eighths of that on the Earth. People would have to wear boots that are specially designed to prevent themselves from floating off into space.
Compared with life on the Earth, life on Mars would be better in some ways. People would have more space. They might live in houses with huge comfortable rooms. Also, robots would do most of their work so that they could have more time to relax.
There would probably be no schools on Mars. Every student would have a computer at home connected to an interplanetary network. They would study at online schools with “e-teachers”.

And oil paper umbrellas became less used in daily life. Instead, they turned into decorative artifacts (工艺品).
Yuhang in Hangzhou is famous for making oil paper umbrellas. The hand-made umbrellas here take more than 70 steps to make, including making bamboo ribs, pasting paper (糊纸) and painting pictures. It usually takes at least seven days to make an umbrella.

Have you ever asked somebody a question but they didn’t reply because they were looking at their phone or computer Or perhaps you’ve gone online to play a game just for 10 minutes but when you check the time, hours have passed. The charity Fairplay wants people to stop using digital devices (电子设备) for one day every week. Is it a good idea to do so Ben and Sue give their opinions on this matter.
“Unplugging can help you raise your spirits,” says Ben. “Screens shouldn’t be all or nothing,” says Sue.
Many people spend too much time online. That can be bad for health. Studies have shown that it can affect sleep, so people will get tired during the daytime. Even though technology is an important part of people’s lives, less time spent online means more time to live in the real world. Whether it’s playing sports or baking, painting or reading a book, a day off line would help people enjoy their hobbies. Hobbies can make people feel more relaxed. Having one screen-free day a week would bring families together. Screens can reduce the time you spend with loved ones and can also cause other problems. A day without screens is a good idea the whole family can follow. Although some people think people will miss something important in the real world when they scroll on social media, receiving a funny dog video from a friend can still make you feel happy at that moment. In fact, research has shown that screen time can develop young people’s education. They can get what they want in a second without going out. It’s also difficult and unwise to spend a whole day off line—people depend on digital devices to keep in touch. What if you find yourself in danger and need to reach someone Surely it’s better to take daily breaks and turn screens off during mealtimes and an hour or two before bed. A healthy balance is the goal.
31.Which topic are Ben and Sue talking about
A.How can we use computers or phones wisely
B.What should people do with digital devices
C.Is it a good idea to play games often online
D.Should we have a weekly screen-free day
32.According to Ben, what does turning screens off bring to us
①Enjoying hobbies.
②Playing sports better.
③Getting people closer.
④Being good for health.
⑤Developing young people’s education.
A.①③④ B.①④⑤ C.②③⑤ D.③④⑤
33.Which opinion may Sue probably agree with
A.People can’t get all they want on the Internet. B.Good friends should often share funny videos.
C.Sometimes digital devices are quite necessary. D.People should use phones during mealtimes.

(22-23八年级下·广东广州·期末)“How are you ” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that Americans greet each other. But “How are you ” is also a very unusual question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks “How are you ” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you ” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree ”, the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong.” But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I’m not sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
People don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they want to end the conversation. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says “I’ve got to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse: “Someone’s at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.
Perhaps you will see people greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, but they don’t say exactly what they are thinking. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it’s part of the game of language.
41.What does an American mean by saying “How are you” ________
A.He tries to greet you with kindness.
B.He wants to know how is your day.

D.He hopes to make sure you are friendly.
42.Which of the following may be best to show disagreement ________

B.I’m afraid I am not sure.
C.Certainly I think you are wrong.
D.I really don’t agree with you.
43.What is a person probably thinking about when he says “Something is burning on the stove.” ________
A.Showing his terrible cooking feelings.
B.Finishing talking as quickly as possible.
C.Checking the food on the stove.
D.Turning off the stove at once.
44.What can we learn from the passage ________
A.Always say what you mean.
B.Better not disagree with other people.
C.Never say exactly what you’re thinking about.
D.Show your politeness when talking with others.
(22-23八年级下·广东广州·期末)Arctic wolves are also called white wolves or polar wolves. They are almost completely white, with some places in yellow, grey, and black. Most of the Arctic wolves live in Alaska. Some can also be found both in Greenland and Canada. The size of them will depend on where they live. Some only weigh about 35 kilograms. Others can weigh up to 65 kg. Some are about 1 meter in length when they are fully grown, while others are twice that long.
Because Arctic wolves live in the terribly cold places, they have two thick layers of fur. The first layer forms a waterproof like a raincoat for the skin. The outer layer gets thicker as winter comes along.
Besides, these wolves have smaller ears than wolves living further south. They also have shorter legs. That means there’s less area for them to lose heat from. And their fury tails can wrap (包裹) right around their bodies when sleeping. The hairs between the pads of their feet help keep them warm when they walk on snow and ice.
Some people believe that the Arctic Wolf is a loner by nature, but that isn’t true. When the wolves are seen alone, they may be away from their wolf group to look for something to eat. This made many people start to imagine the talk between aliens and humans. Imagining himself as the life on Venus, a reporter from No. 1 Middle School wrote the following letter to people of Earth on the school newspaper.
Attention, People of Earth! Fine. The big secret is out. Many of your finest scientists have discovered there is life tens of millions of miles away—here, on the beautiful planet of Venus.
