(22-23八年级下·广东深圳·期末)After wearing masks in public for three years, many Japanese are taking classes to learn how to smile again.
Smiling is meant to be a natural response, but it appears that hiding behind a mask for three years has left many Japanese unable to smile naturally. Some of them now paying smiling trainers to teach them how to show their white teeth again in a natural way. They take special classes where they are taught how to exercise different parts of their faces and even their neck muscles (肌肉) to smile properly and express happiness without looking strange.
“A smile is a smile only when it is shown on your face,” Keiko Kawano, a successful businesswoman who used to be a radio host, told the Japan Times. “Even if you’re thinking about smiling or that you’re happy, if you have no expression, it won’t reach the person you communicate with.”

“Some people say that even if they’re able to take off their masks, they don’t want to show the bottom half of their faces, or that they don’t know how to smile anymore,” smile trainer Miho Kitano said. “Actually, improving your smile is just like training the other parts of your body. (22-23八年级下·广东深圳·期末)Unlike many other penguins (企鹅), African penguins do not live in the coldest areas of the earth, but on warm sunny coasts of South Africa. They are the first penguin species (物种) discovered by humans.
African penguins grow to 60—70cm tall and weigh 3—4kg. They have pink patches above their eyes. Blood (血液) is sent to these patches to be cooled by the outside air. The hotter the weather gets, the pinker the patches appear. Each African penguin has a unique pattern of black spots (斑点) on the white chest. These spots, like human fingerprints, can be used to identify the penguins.
African penguins feed mainly on fish. These flightless birds swim about 40km every day for food. When they are very hungry, they sometimes cover a distance of 110km. Their top swimming speed is about 20km per hour. They can dive as deep as 120 meters and hold their breath for 2.5 minutes underwater. African penguins moult (换羽) once a year for about 20 days. During this time, they can’t hunt because their new feathers are not yet waterproof (防水的). Without food, they lose nearly half of their body weight.
African penguins live in groups called colonies. They can live for 10—15 years in the wild, but those in protected environments can live for up to 30 years.

(22-23八年级下·广东深圳·期末)World Animal Day falls on Oct. 4 every year. It has been started in 1931 to remind everyone on our planet to care about wild animals. Unluckily, many wild animals are facing great danger. Some even became extinct and cannot be seen forever. Recently, China has done much to improve the living condition of endangered wild animals.
The protection of Asian elephants is a good example. Asian elephants in China are mostly found in Yunnan province. On March 16, 2022, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington D.C. , started a six-month celebration. This year is the 50th anniversary of the arrival of two giant pandas.
The first pandas from China—Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing—arrived at the zoo on April 16, fifty year ago. In that year, China and the US set up diplomatic (外交的) relations. China gifted the US these two pandas as a gesture of goodwill. Over the past 50 years, eight pandas have lived ar the zoo.
From meals to daily fun, the zoo teams have found ways to take care of the giant pandas. A food team grows the animals’ favorite food—bamboo—in the zoo. Working with local landowners, it also gets bamboo from 20 stands (竹林) across Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Sometimes, the team receives donations of bamboo from the public. Besides bamboo, the bears receive apples, sweet potatoes, high-fiber hiseeits and honey water. Sweet potatoes are a favoritc!
The team also prepares fun activities and toys, which help the pandas stay active and smart. Pandas can paint with the zookeepers, too.
Behind the protection work is a close partnership (合作关系) with panda experts in China. Usually, the zookeepers and Chinese panda experts visit each other several times a year to share knowledge about the animals. During the pandemic (疫情), they kept in touch through emails and video calls. It has been a really good experience for Brandie Smith, director of the zoo, to work with Chinese experts.

(22-23八年级下·广东深圳·期末) Teachers can change the world
I got an invitation to take part in an education conference (会议) at a high school. At lunchtime, I saw a young girl who looked familiar. I knew she had been a student of mine. I tried hard to recall her name, but I
couldn’t. It really made me sad, as I have always been unable to remember former students.
Her eyes met mine and she threw her arms around and said, “Mrs. G, it’s me, Sarah, and I’m still writing!”
All the memories soon came back to my mind. You see, Sarah was never a student in my classroom. Sarah's mother had left her family and her father was absent (缺席的) from her life as well. She was sent to live with foster parents (养父母) the year I met her. Sarah was angry, often got in trouble and was often in the principal’s office.

Every morning at school before I started my classes, she would come into my classroom and would work on her writing skills.

(23-24八年级下·广东深圳·期中)You never know where life will lead you. When I was a young boy, my elder sister Becky always seemed to over-shadow me.
When your sister is both a great athlete (运动员) and a great student, it’s just natural that people will easily notice her accomplishments, and not notice what her little brother has done. Sometimes, it’s just hard to be the little brother of someone who does everything well.
Becky was the best swimmer in our province, but I never liked swimming. One time, as a kid, I got water up my nose and never wanted to get in the water again. And since Becky was such a great swimmer, I was just in her shadow again.
Swimming was not for me.
One day, I fell off my skateboard and broke my leg so badly that the doctors said I could never really skateboard again. They said there was only one exercise that would be good for me—swimming!
Well, I gave it a try. Every week, I got a little better and hated swimming a little less. I worked at it so much that one day my high school swimming coach asked me to join the school team. You can imagine how that made me feel, considering my sister Becky had always been the swimming star in our family.
Much to everyone’s surprise, I ended up winning a silver medal in the city finals.
Becky She doesn’t swim much anymore. But me I do. It’s a big part of my life now.
You never know which road life will take you down. Look at me—a swimmer!

a swimming pool. Just jump in and start swimming! You might be surprised where you end up.

“You really have to touch the leaves with your hands to see how much water should be removed (移除),” Fan said. “If too much is removed, the leaves will break into pieces; if not enough is removed, the tea will have a bitter taste.”
This traditional technique dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. It not only ensures the quality (质量)

In March this year, when President Xi Jinping visited Hangzhou, he watched Fan roast tea leaves. Fan changed the strength and movement of his hands as he felt the tea leaves roast. Xi later said, “The things made by two hands cannot be replaced by modern technology.”

(23-24八年级下·广东深圳·期中)Positive body language can tell you a lot about how someone is feeling. It shows that they’re interested in you and the conversation.
A relaxed posture shows a sense of comfort and ease. If someone sits comfortably and breathes calmly, he
may be free from stress (压力). He will leave you an impression that encourages you to share a lot with him.
Arms relaxed also shows that the person is easy to get along with. For example, when you’re talking to the host at a party, and the host uncrosses his arms and opens his hands, you must feel welcomed.
Proper eye contact is necessary in a pleasant conversation. Looking into the other person’s eyes shows that you’re really interested in what they are saying. However, staring at others too long can be considered impolite. So proper eye contact also means looking away sometimes to avoid staring.
Nodding along is a way of showing that you’re really listening. When you nod while someone else is talking, it lets them know that you agree with what they’re saying and understand their meaning.
Smiling is an effective way to be kind and honest. Everyone loves being around people who always have a smile on their face.
Using positive body language can make communication much smoother and bring great things in return. The proper use of body language in communication with people will lead to some surprising results!
61.According to this passage, how many positive body languages are mentioned

(23-24八年级下·广东深圳·期中)“When side by side two rabbits go, who can tell the buck (雄兔) from the doe (雌兔) ” China’s Yang Jingru and Li Jinzi “played the buck and the doe” to win China’s first gold and
silver medals in the women’s 1500m short track speed skating event of the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 on Jan 20.
They used the classic “rabbit strategy (策略)”. This strategy usually needs teamwork of two skaters. One skater sprints (冲刺) from the start, while the other stays behind.
This is different from the usual 1500m speed skating strategy of keeping an average pace and then picking up speed in the last few laps (圈). Using the “rabbit strategy”, after the first turn, Yang suddenly skated at full speed. She then quickly lapped (领先一圈) the other skaters and then stayed at the back of the pack.
Working with Yang, Li changed between the front and the back in the first half of the race. This made the other skaters wonder who on earth was the “leading rabbit”. When the referee announced there was only one lap to go, everyone except Yang had two laps left.
The 1500m presents a great challenge of endurance (耐力) for players as it is. Using the rabbit strategy makes it even harder. Coach Liu Xiaoliang explained to Beijing News that choosing Yang as the “rabbit” was because of her excellent endurance and rapid starts.
“To be honest, I wanted to win the gold so much and did whatever I could to prepare for it. I am very happy to finally get it,” Yang told Xinhua after the race.

A.How much she wanted to win.
B.Her clever strategy and final speed.

(23-24八年级下·广东深圳·期中)Have you ever heard the sound of a hummingbird They make a buzzing noise when they fly. They make this noise because they beat their wings so fast. They beat their wings up to 80 times a second. All that flapping makes a lot of noise. That’s why we call them hummingbirds.
Hummingbirds fly in a unique way. They move their wings so fast that they can hover. This means that they can stay in one spot in the middle of the air, like a helicopter. Sometimes they fly upside down. They are the only bird that flies backward.
Hummingbirds are small. One type called the bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world. Bee hummingbirds weigh less than a penny. They are just a little bit bigger than bees. I guess that’s why they get their name.
Hummingbirds move fast. It takes lots of energy to move as fast as they do. This means that they need to eat a lot of food. Their favorite food is nectar, a sweet liquid (液体) inside of some flowers. They drink more than their own weight of nectar daily. They have to visit hundreds of flowers to get enough nectar to live.
Hummingbirds help flowers too. They get pollen (花粉) on their heads and bills (鸟嘴) when they feed. Flowers use pollen to make seeds. Hummingbirds help pollen get from one flower to the next. This helps flowers make more seeds. More seeds mean more flowers. More flowers mean more food for hummingbirds. Isn’t it nice how that works out
