Now, I’m living at the Beijing Zoo. I’m the most popular panda here. Do you want to see me Well, rush towards me as soon as the zoo opens at 7: 30 a.m.! If you’re not a good runner, then I’m afraid the only thing you’re going to be able to see is a very large crowd outside of my room.
I’m also the busiest (my keepers use the word “naughtiest” (最淘气的), but I think it should be “busiest”) panda in the zoo. I’ve kept a few birds as my pets, feed them daily. Most of them have become as chubby (and cute) as me. I enjoy digging tunnels in my room, too. However, every time I do this, my keepers come inside of my room and stand behind me. Then, I have to pretend that I’m looking for some grass to eat.
I’m also interested in working out. I’m good at doing splits (劈一字腿), and I do sit-ups (仰卧起坐) almost every day. I’ve even tried to climb up the wall of my room (I want to shake hands with my fans!). Every time that my keepers tell me not to do this, I nod my head. But as soon as they’re gone I start planning out my next climb!

March 16 is National Panda Day in the United States. This year, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC, used the day to celebrate the 50th anniversary (周年纪念日) of the first two giant pandas coming into its care. The celebration will last six months.
In 1972, the US President Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, made a historic visit to China. On her second day in the country, Pat went to Beijing Zoo to see pandas. A new panda couple, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, arrived at the zoo in 2000.They still live at the zoo with their cub (幼崽), Xiao Qji. The couple’s other three cubs, Tai Shan, Bao Bao and Bei Bei were returned to China.
The pandas have been seen by tens of millions of people. Brooklyn, a 3-year-old girl told China Daily that she wanted “more panda mommies and panda babies” to come to the zoo.

①Zoos are very popular with adults and children. But are zoos actually a good thing
②Some people are against keeping animals in zoos. In their opinion, animals often suffer a lot for being enclosed. Even the best zoos can’t provide the environment that animals have in the wild. It’s a pity that the animals living in the wild are caught, and then kept away from their families. This leads many zoo animals to feel nervous or sad. What’s worse, some zoo animals may even die earlier than their wild relatives.
③However, some people have different ideas. They think zoos can connect people with animals, educate the public to protect animals and call on people to save animals as well as their homes. Some zoos offer a safe place to those animals which have been badly treated. Also, to support international breeding (繁殖) program, zoos have special programs to produce more young animals, especially for the species (物种) which are in danger of dying out. In the wild, some of the endangered species have trouble in finding partners and having new baby animals. A good zoo will provide a safe environment for these species. Moreover, zoos also do research into animal behavior and how to treat their illnesses.
④So, are zoos good or not It depends on how good the zoo is. It’s sure that zoos have more advantages (优势) than their harmful effects. But it is understandable that many people don’t agree to enclose animals for any reason.

The World Health Organization says air pollution makes seven million people lose their lives around the world each year. Even if polluted air does not kill people, it can make them very sick.
However, breathing dirty air does more than hurt people’s body. It can also affect their brain and their ability to think.
A new study shows that air pollution can cause a “huge” reduction (降低) in our intelligence. The researchers reported that long-term exposure (暴露) to air pollution can affect a person’s mental (智力的) abilities in two areas: language and math. Xi Chen, the researcher of the Yale School of Public Health led the study. He and his team found that breathing polluted air can reduce a person’s education level by about one year.
Chen said that the affect generally is worse for those over 64 years of age, for men and for those with little or no education. “The older persons—they are more affected. And we find, quite interestingly men are more affected than women. And people working outdoors are more affected than people working indoors.”
The researchers found that the influence of pollution on language ability is even more serious as people age, especially among men and the less educated. Why are a person’s language skills more affected than math There’s an important part in our brain: white matter.
White matter is more connected with a person’s language skills. Studies have shown that air pollution has a great influence on the white matter in the brain. Chen said that air pollution did affect the math skills just not as much as their language skills.
