Did you know that gardens in schools can help kids develop a love of nature A research from China found a school garden with different kinds of plants and animals can make a big difference. It can develop children’s interest in nature and even reduce the stress they face from studying.
In the study published in People and Nature, researchers from the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden tried to see how nature-related learning activities in a school garden may influence kids’ interest in nature.
The study took place at a primary school in Yunnan Province, with 24 kids in the fourth grade taking part in weekly 40-minute activities over a term. The students were divided into three groups. One group observed (观察) nature with given tasks, one observed nature without step-by-step instructions, and the third group explored the nature by doing experiments. After four months, the researchers found that over two-thirds of the students became more interested in nature.
Also, the study showed that gardens within school grounds and teacher support in the garden are of great importance to develop children’s interest in nature.
Considering the fact that children in China don’t have enough outdoor activities in natural environments, but spend too much screen time on phones and computers, Chen Jin, one of the researchers, suggested building gardens and organizing more club activities in schools. There was another bang (巨响) from the outside door. The girls ran to the table, ready for their breakfast.
“Happy Christmas, Mother!” they shouted.
“Happy Christmas!” said Mrs March.
Then the smile disappeared from her face. “Girls, listen. Not far away is a poor woman, Mrs Hummel, with a new baby. Six children are in one bed, trying to keep warm, as they have no wood and nothing to eat. It is hard to ask...but will you give them your breakfast as a Christmas present ”
For a minute no one spoke. Then Jo said, “Mother, I’m so glad you came before we began to eat!” And the girls quickly put their breakfast in a basket.
“I knew you would do it,” said Mrs March, smiling.
She took the girls and their servant Hannah to a cold, miserable (破旧的) little old house, where they found a sick mother, a crying baby, and a group of children with white, frightened faces. The children were on the bed under a blanket (毛毯), trying to keep warm.
The woman almost cried when she saw the girls. Hannah made a fire with the wood. Mrs March gave the mother tea and hot food, then she dressed the little baby gently. The girls put the children round the fire and fed them like hungry birds.
No one was happier than those hungry young ladies who gave away their breakfast on Christmas morning, although they ate none of it.
Night fell, when the girls saw the supper table, they could not believe their eyes! There was ice-cream, cake, fruit, French chocolate and even flowers!
“Old Mr Laurence sent it!” said Mrs March.
“Hannah told his servant about your breakfast party,” said Mrs March. “He sent me a note this afternoon, asking if he could send you a few small Christmas presents.”
Why did the smile disappear from Mrs March’s face
She knew Mrs Hummel and her children were poor.

She felt sorry to ask the girls to give away the breakfast.
She was so cold because she just came back from outside.

C. Dressing the baby. D. Offering tea and food.
Which is the best word to describe the Marches
Brave and pleasant. B. Active and polite.
C. Honest and serious. D. Warm-hearted and generous.
What can we infer from the passage
The Marches refused to offer the Hummels breakfast at first.
Old Mr Laurence sent the girls food to show off his richness.
The girls planned to prepare Mrs Hummel breakfast as presents.
The Marches felt thankful to Mr Laurence who provided them food.
What can we learn from the story
A friends in need is a friend indeed.
Family should help each other.
There is a reward for the good.
We should look on the bright side.

So what can you do to improve your sleeping at night Wait three hours before going to bed after having a big meal. Studies show that lack of sleep damages attention and ability. Remember to continue doing it even on weekends and days off. Going to bed on time could be the key to unlock your creativity. Studies have shown that certain sleeping positions mean success.
Sleep loss can have a great effect on your job performance—from influencing your focus and attention, to making you feel more stressed and impatient. (26) Instead, people who are well rested score higher on understanding tests, have better skills at problem solving, and make less mistakes. (27)
Be regular in your daily sleeping
Build a regular sleep habit and always keep it. (28) It helps regulate your circadian rhythm (昼夜节律) all the time. This will make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep all night.
Follow the 10-3-2-1-0 method
Stop drinking caffeine (咖啡因) ten hours before you go to bed, as it takes ten hours for caffeine to leave your blood. (29) Finish work and other exciting tasks two hours before sleep, to allow your mind to relax and wind down. Turn off screens one hour before bed, to stop the blue light affecting your sleeping quality.
Try a different position

Dear Mike,
How is it going I'm so happy to hear that you're learning Chinese these days. Many foreigners find it hard to master Chinese, but don't worry. I will give you some useful tips.
First of all, you'd better take a Chinese course so as to build a system of the basic knowledge with the help of the teacher. Apart from that, reading is an effective way for you to have a good sense of the language. I suggest that you start with children's books because they are easy to understand. Moreover, it's advisable to watch Chinese films or TV series to learn more about Chinese culture.
Last but not least, why not make friends with the exchange students from China In this way, you will have plenty of chances to practise your spoken Chinese.Where there is a will, there is a way. If you follow my advice, perhaps we can write to each other in Chinese next time.
I'm sure you'll be much better at Chinese before long.
Yours, Li Hua
