As a medical student at the university, I was gathering data(数据) for my paper. At the hospital, I would review the medical records of stroke (中风) patients, and then interview them.
There was a 43-year-old stroke patient, whom I will call Ms A. She was clearly still 1 . as she was still getting better from her recent stroke. After I finished 2 some information from her, I prepared to leave. Before I could stand up, Ms A spoke up in her weak voice. “Do you think I can get back to my normal life ”
Deep in my heart, I thought, I wish I was your 3 so I could answer you properly. I replied that while I didn’t know much about her case, I could tell her what I had learned about the recovery of stroke patients.
Ms A started talking about herself. She shared her 4 and sufferings, and talked about her husband, who was 5 in a car accident and she was the only breadwinner in the family. She also expressed her fear about the future of her children if something 6 . happened to her. The conversation went on for about 20 minutes. All I did was holding Ms A’s hand and 7 my head as a way of showing that I understood her worries.
Finally, Ms A stopped talking. “I’m very sorry for keeping you here to listen to my problems, but I feel better now. I had no one to 8 my problems to. Thank you.”
Ms A taught me one of the most important lessons. Sometimes patients do not need 9 . medicine or modern technology. They just need someone with the 10 and willingness to lend an ear. For me, that is one of the best things a doctor can do for a patient.

Scooter is a seven-year-old Chinese Crested dog (冠毛犬). His body is hairless, but he has a thin white hair on his head. Two of his legs face backward. Scooter’s special looks won him the 2023 World’s Ugliest Dog contest.
The World’s Ugliest Dog contest has been running for almost 50 years. The contest title may not sound very nice, but it isn’t at all about making fun of ugly dogs. Instead, the event celebrates unusual dogs to encourage people to adopt (收养) dogs that need a loving home.
Scooter may be a star now, but things didn’t always look so good for him. He was born with disability. Luckily, the strong dog learned an incredible trick: he learned to walk by balancing just on his two front legs, though it’s not easy for him.
Linda Elmquist, the dog’s owner, says Scooter has no idea that he is different from other dogs. She says he sometimes barks at much bigger dogs, and doesn’t seem at all worried about the size difference. But in general, she says, Scooter is friendly with everyone.
The World’s Ugliest Dog contest started back in the 1970s. Different from most dog contests which often focus on special skills or the dog’s family history, it aims to show that every dog, no matter what it looks like, should be given love and a good home.
Scooter deeply impressed the judges (裁判) of the contest. One of the judges, Gaudi Schwartz, says Scooter has a “warm, strong power to change the meaning of the word ‘ugly’.”
For this year, at least, no dog expresses those ideas better than Scooter.
What is the aim of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest
To make fun of those poor ugly dogs.
To compete on the dogs’ special skills.
To raise money for the homeless dogs.
To call on people to adopt dogs in need.
What does the underlined word “incredible” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
foolish B. friendly C. humorous D. unbelievable
Which of the following is TRUE about Scooter
He finally won the contest by training hard every day.
He has even no idea that he is different from other dogs.
He can run as fast as other healthy dogs with his front legs.
His whole body is covered with white hair, except for his head.
Why did Scooter impress the judges according to Paragraph 6
He was always friendly to all the people around him.
He learned to walk quickly by using his two front legs.
His strong spirit gives the word “ugly” a warm meaning.
He was the ugliest dog among all the contestants at that time.

On the eve of Passover, Sadie and her family was almost ready. Just as what they had done every year before, they cleaned the house and gave away their bread and cookies. They also washed Ginger’s dog toys.
“Just one more thing,” said her brother, Ezra. “Searching for bread crumbs (面包屑).”
The house had to be free of bread for Passover. As part of the bedikat chametz tradition, Mom had broken their last piece of bread into smaller pieces and hidden them. Dad put a feather, a flashlight, a wooden spoon, and foil(锡纸)on the table. “Use these to search.”
Ezra shined the flashlight along the table. “I see two crumbs!” He pushed them into the spoon with the feather. Sadie pointed lower and found two on the chair and carefully put them onto the foil. Ezra waved the flashlight. “Two by the oven!”
Sadie checked the window. “You’re warm,” Mom said. Sadie pointed the flashlight lower onto the ground. “Colder now,” said Mom. Sadie moved back to the window and smiled. “Two crumbs!”
But the count was still incomplete. Ezra searched the bowl, but no luck. “Am I warm or cold ” Mom shook her head. “I don’t remember,” she replied.
Sadie opened the oven but nothing inside. Sadie looked at Ginger, who was waiting hopefully for crumbs to drop out of the oven. Suddenly, Sadie had an idea. “Find the crumbs, Ginger!” she shouted and shook the oven. Mom, Dad, and Ezra looked at Sadie in surprise. Ginger sniffed (嗅) around the corner.
“There!” Mom shouted as Ginger rushed out and ate the last two crumbs. “Now, we only have eight crumbs,” Ezra noted. “But you have found all, with Ginger’s help!” said Dad. Then he said. “Why is this night different…” He smiled, “... from last year ” Sadie laughed. “This year, △ ”

The Science and Technology Daily reported that scientists from the University of Washington recently used artificial intelligence (AI) to help them create new antibodies (抗体). According to the report, antibodies are the “little fighters” in our bodies that guard against attackers like viruses and bacteria (细菌).
The scientists used a tool called RFdiffusion. This tool can design small proteins that can stick to another protein. However, these proteins are not the same as the antibodies in our bodies. A special structure of antibodies allows them to find and attack viruses and bacteria. However, this structure is difficult to copy by using computer technology.
Therefore, the scientists used a large amount of experimental data and computer technology to train and improve the RFdiffusion tool. This way, they can use this tool to design many new antibodies.
These newly designed antibodies are very powerful. They can recognize many proteins from bacteria and viruses, and also target (针对) a special goal for cancer drugs. The scientists produced these antibodies in the lab and tested whether they were truly effective. The results showed that out of every 100 newly designed antibodies, one worked as expected. Although this success rate is not very high, they still believe that this tool will help them find more difficult-to-treat disease objects in the future.
AI has made some progress in antibody design, but more research and improvement are needed before it can be truly applied to disease treatment. One reason is that the antibodies don’t stick very well to their targets. Another reason is that we need to make the antibodies natural enough to be accepted by our bodies.
What are antibodies described as in the report
A tool that can design small proteins.
Tiny fighters that fight against attackers.
A computer technology that is intelligent.
Proteins that can tightly stick to another protein.
How did the scientists improve the RFdiffusion tool
By providing tools to design many new antibodies.
By designing a new protein that can stick to antibodies.
By copying the structure of antibodies with the help of AI.
By using much experimental data and computer technology.
How many of the antibodies took effect in the lab in Paragraph 4
1%. B. 90%. C. 10%. D. 100%.
What does the underlined word it in the last paragraph refer to?
Antibody research. B. Artificial intelligence.
C. Experimental data. D. Computer technology.
Which is the best title for the passage
A Step Forward in Treatment
An Effective Drug for Disease
AI Applied in Antibody Design
RFdiffusion Tool for Protein Design

How has global warming changed your life Perhaps you experience hotter summers. 26
For thousands of years, reindeer herders have been living well with the cold winters. 27 It allows them to prepare for and survive cold winters.
. 28 Because of this, their knowledge about weather became less useful. In 2014, heavy rainfall - a result of warmer weather - formed an ice cover above the lichen (地衣), normally covered by soft snow. As a result of being unable to eat the lichen under the ice, the reindeer suffered from hunger and tens of thousands of them died.
The warming climate causes great loss of reindeer which herders depend on to make a living. 29 In the local language, there are over 300 words to describe snow. But with less snow, something may disappear from their culture.
Herders have been working together with scientists to better deal with climate change. For example, for scientists, the difference between different types of snow is hard to tell. But local people can see what scientists fail to see. 30
“We must realize we can't continue to harm our planet. This is an emergency. We need to listen to all the local people who know how to get along well with the planet,” said a herder.

Hello, everyone! I'm Li Hua. I'm honored to be here to give a speech about Cantonese Opera.
Cantonese Opera has a long history which can date back to the Ming Dynasty. In the process of its development, it kept improving by mixing different opera styles. The performances are based on traditional Chinese stories and major historic events. It is a unique type of theatre art which not only combines stories, music with acting, but also shows the beauty of traditional Chinese costumes. In 2009, Cantonese Opera was included in the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list, which makes it well-known all over the world.
In my opinion, the main reason why young people don't have a passion for Cantonese Opera is that they know little about it. The same goes with other traditional Chinese culture. So it's necessary for us to be open to traditional Chinese culture and try to enjoy its beauty. Once you have a try, I believe you will fall in love with it. Let's do our part in inheriting and carrying forward traditional Chinese culture.
