Last summer holiday, I volunteered to work at a vets(兽医诊所). There I saw a lot of dogs.
Minnie was the funniest-looking dog I’d ever seen. Short thin curly(卷的) hair covered her fat body. Her eyes always seemed surprised. And her tail looked like a rat’s tail.
She was brought to the vet because her owners didn’t want her any more. I thought Minnie had a sweet personality, though. No one should judge(评判) her by her looks, I thought. I advertised Minnie in the local paper: Funny-looking dog, well-behaved, need a loving family.
When a boy called, I warned him that Minnie was strange-looking. The boy on the phone told me that his grandfather’s sixteen-year-old dog had just died. They wanted Minnie no matter what. I gave Minnie a good bath. Then we waited for them to arrive. At last, an old car pulled up in front of the vet’s. Two kids ran to the door. They picked Minnie up and rushed her out to their grandfather, who was waiting in the car. I hurried behind them to see his reaction to Minnie. Inside the car, the grandfather held Minnie in his arms and stroked her soft hair. She licked (舔) his face. Her tail shook around so quickly that it looked like it might fly off her body.
“She’s perfect!” the old man said happily.
I was thankful that Minnie had found a good home.
Suddenly, I saw that the grandfather’s eyes were a milky white colour—he was blind.
34. Why did the writer advertise Minnie in the local paper
A. Because he wanted to sell her at a good price.
B. Because he didn’t want it any more, either.
C. Because he wanted to find a family for her.
D. Because he wanted to have another dog.
35. The underlined word “stroked” may mean________ .
A. 抚摸 B. 拨 C. 剪 D. 揪
36. Which of the following is True
A. Minnie wasn’t the type the old man loved.
B. The old man couldn’t see how funny Minnie looked.
C. Minnie knew very well how to make others disliked her.
D. Minnie was like the old man’s dog which had just died.

Where in the world can you take an hour’s train ride, and pass a forest, a London street, a scene from the Wild West, and a burning building that never burns down There’s only one place, and that’s Hollywood, in California. The scenes you see from the tourist train are film sets in the Universal Studios, one of the oldest and largest movie companies in the USA.
A visit to Universal Studios brings back memories of great days of Hollywood, the films and the stars. But they are only memories. Hollywood isn’t quite the same as it used to be. Costs have gone up and confidence has gone down. Movie-makers are afraid to spend their money on expensive new ideas. Instead, they repeat old ones.
The film industry is changing fast. Teenagers still go out to the movies. The theatre is a good place to meet friends away from home. But older people mostly stay home to watch drama series, like Dynasty have become as important to Hollywood as expensive movies. These “soup opera”, as they are called, show rich, powerful families living in beautiful homes and wearing beautiful clothes. But the actors and actresses are nearly all middle-aged, like many of the people who watch them.
Though it is soap operas that are keeping the film-makers of Hollywood in business, big films are still being made in America. But more and more of them are made outside Hollywood. New York is the most important new centre, but there are many others as well. Movie-makers have realized that they don’t need Hollywood any more. Modern cameras and other equipment(设备) are smaller and lighter. They can be taken to film real streets and real houses instead of expensively made copies in a studio. Other states, especially Florida and Texas, are working hard to take the film business away from California. They are offering better working conditions and lower cost.
37. The movie industry in California isn’t as successful as before because_________.
young people don’t go to movie theatres any more
there is strong competition (竞争)from other states
its movie companies are in need of young stars
the state hasn’t put a development plan into action
38. Which of the following seems to be a threat(威胁)to Hollywood
The use of modern cameras and other equipment.
The interest of middle-aged film stars.
The making of TV series like Dynasty.
The expensively made copies of scenes.
39. What can we learn about “soap operas” from the passage
They are teenagers’ favourtie.
They are much more expensive.
They are less attractive.
They are cheaper and easier to make.
40. The passage mainly tells us___________________________.
something about the film industry in the USA
the importance of soap operas in Hollywood
the good old days of Hollywood
the film business in California

任务型阅读(5分)
You have probably heard it before, most likely from your English teacher. If you want to become a good writer, read good writing. Unluckily, you may not have understood what did good to you and even what you were supposed to get from that experience.
As you start reading a book, poem, or story, do so with no thought at all and the experience will improve your writing. Just read for pleasure to begin with, or to learn. As you progress through the work, think about whether or not it is "easy" reading. Do you become so interested in the subject and flow of the writing that you completely forget the person who wrote it, or does the composition sometimes call too much attention to itself through words and phrases that seem out of place or unexpected These latter situations are a chance to learn from the writer's mistakes. In fact, the reader should not have to worry about how an writer does "his thing"... He should be able to just enjoy and learn. Every time a word strikes you as poorly chosen, stop to think about why it has this effect. Also, do not spend a lot of time analyzing (分析) the passage but put more effort into enjoying it from the whole.
Another thing I do, especially with nonfiction (非小说) books, is to select a part to read as if it is a completely separate work. Once again, read as a common consumer (消费者) rather than a critic (批评家). For learning how words and phrases work together on the most basic (基本的) level, however, nothing is more suitable than your devotion to reading poems. A poet is often trying to put a book's worth of meaning and feelings into lines, and every side of the work shows a very close attention to craft (工艺).
As you can see, there is no one simple way of reading to improve your writing. The key is not to make it boring. Choose writers you admire or like most, and enjoy their works as anyone else would. As long as (只要)you are reading, you are improving yourself as a writer.
Title ________1_______ your writing by reading
Fact ▲ Reading the good writing ______2_____ you become a good writher.▲You don't understand the advantages of reading and what to get from reading.

Conclusions ▲ Don't make _____8_______ bored with reading.▲ Choose your_______9__________ writers and enjoy their works.▲You are sure to make _________10___________ during reading.
______________ 2. ____________ 3. ___________ 4. ___________ 5. _____________
6. _______________ 7. _____________ 8. ___________ 9. ___________ 10.____________
