I was two days old the first time I met Auggie Pullman. I don’t remember it myself, but my mum told me about it. She and Dad had just brought me home from the hospital for the first time, and Auggie’s parents had just brought him home from the hospital for the first time too. But Auggie was already three months old by then. He had to stay in the hospital because he needed some operations (手术) that would allow him to breathe and swallow (吞咽). Breathing and swallowing are things most of us don’t ever think about, because we do them automatically (无意识地). But they weren’t automatic for Auggie when he was born.
I don't think I really understood how different Auggie was from everyone else until I was four years old. It was wintertime and Auggie and I were wrapped in our coats and scarves while we played outside in the playground. At one point, we climbed up to the top of the jungle gym (儿童攀爬架) and waited in line to go down the tall slide (滑梯). When we were almost next, the little girl in front of us got cold feet after seeing how high it was, so she turned around to let us pass.
That’s when she saw Auggie. Her eyes opened really wide and she started screaming and crying loudly. She was so upset that she couldn’t even walk. Her mum had to climb up to get her. Then Auggie started to cry, because he knew the girl was crying because of him. He covered his face with his scarf so nobody could see him, and then his mum Isabel had to climb up to get him too. I remember seeing tears in Isabel’s eyes as she carried Auggie home.
That was the first time I realized how different Auggie was from the rest of us. It wasn't the last time, though.

It was a hot summer day, and we were all sitting in the classroom, waiting for our teacher to arrive. But when she walked in, she looked upset. “I have some bad news,” she said. “Someone has stolen our class pet.
Our class pet was a little hamster (仓鼠) named Squeakers. We all loved him and took turns taking care of him each week.
Everyone in the class was upset. We couldn’t believe someone had done something like that. We all wanted to find out who did it, so we asked everyone if they had seen anything.
After a few days, we got a break in the case. One of the students in our class heard someone bragging (吹嘘) about stealing Squeakers. We told our teacher, and she called the headmaster.
The next day, the headmaster called an assembly (展会) for the whole school. He told everyone what had happened, and he asked the person who had stolen Squeakers to come forward and return him.
At first, no one said anything. But then, several students in another class raised their hands. Then they led us to a locker (储物柜). Squeakers was there, safe and sound.
We were all so happy to have him back. And we were even happier to see the kids who had taken him come forward and say sorry. They said they did it because they thought Squeakers was too cute.
The experience taught us about working together and standing up for what’s right. We learnt that even when things seem hopeless, there’s always a way to find a solution. And we learnt that sometimes, people make mistakes, but they can always make things right again if they try.

Do you like watching comedy New research has found that comedy doesn’t just make us feel good--it has the power to improve heart health.
A recent study set out to test whether or not “laughter therapy” could help people who have heart disease. The researchers studied 26 adults, with an average age of 64. All of them had coronary artery disease (冠状动脉疾病).
Over three months, 13 of the adults were asked to watch two-hour-long comedy shows every week. The other 13 were asked to watch two videos on serious topics like social problems. After this, they were examined by doctors.
The comedy-watching group showed a big improvement in the amount of oxygen the heart could pump (输送) around the body. The arteries in the comedy group also got better at expanding-this meant that more blood could flow through them. There was less plaque (斑) in the arteries afterwards too, cutting the person’s risk of having a heart attack.
Professor Marco Saffi, who led the study, said laughter helps the heart because it releases chemicals in the body called endorphins. These help the heart to relax.
Saffi thinks the results show that laughter therapy could be used to treat patients at risk of heart problems. He said, “It does not have to be TV programmes. People with heart disease could be invited to comedy evenings, or encouraged to enjoy fun evenings with family and friends. People should try to do things that make them laugh at least twice a week.”
( ) 37. What do we know about the 26 people who took the test
A. They were all men. B. They were the same age.
C. They shared the same disease. D. They all loved comedy shows.
( ) 38. To know how the study was done, one can read_______.
A. Paragraph 5 B. Paragraph 4 C. Paragraph 3 D. Paragraph 2
( ) 39. What might Professor Marco Saffi advise people with heart disease to do
A. To watch TV less. B. To make more friends.
C. To go out twice a week. D. To go to comedy evenings.
( ) 40. What is the best title for this passage
A. Laughter: the best medicine B. Comedy: the more, the better
C. Take care of your heart health D. Learn from Professor Marco Saffi

I’m happy to be a member of our school’s volunteer club. Last weekend, we did some voluntary work. On Saturday morning, we visited an old people’s home. There, we cleaned up the rooms, talked with the elderly and taught the elderly to use their phones. On Saturday afternoon, we helped clean the old advertisements off the walls in our town. On Sunday morning, we called on people to give away things to Project Hope. It was a tiring but meaningful weekend.
You see, you can easily help your neighbourhood and people in need as long as you care. Join our club or a local one and start volunteering! Together we’ll make the world a better place.
