Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context
Human beings have somehow managed to engineer the night to receive us by filling it with light. This kind of control is no different from the feat ( 壮 举 ) of damming a river. Its benefits come with____41____ — called light pollution — whose effects scientists are only now beginning to study. Light pollution is largely the result of bad lighting design. ____42____ lighting washes out the darkness of night, altering light levels and light rhythms to which many forms of life, including ourselves, have____43____. Wherever man-made light spills into the natural world, some aspects of life-migration, reproduction, feeding-is affected.
For most human history, the phrase “light pollution” would have____44____. Imagine walking towards London on a moonlit night around 1800, when it was Earth’s most populous city. Nearly a million people lived there, ____45____ candles, torches and lanterns, as they always had. Only a few houses were lit by gas, and there would be no public gaslights in the streets or squares for another seven years. From a few miles away, you would have been more likely to____46____ London than to see its dim collective glow.
We’ve lit up the night as if it were a(n) ____47____ country. As a matter of fact, among mammals (哺乳动物) alone, the number of species active at night is astonishing. Light is a powerful biological force, and on many species it acts as a magnet attracting them to it. The effect is so powerful that scientists speak of songbirds and seabirds being____48____ by searchlights on land or by the light from gas flares on marine oil platforms, circling and circling in the thousands until they drop.
It was once thought that light pollution only affected astronomers, who need to see the night sky in all its glorious clarity. Unlike astronomers, most of us may not need a____49____ view of the night sky for our work. _____50_____, like most other creatures, we do need darkness. _____51_____ darkness is pointless. It is as essential to maintaining our biological welfare as_____52_____ itself; the price of modifying our internal clockwork means it doesn’t operate as it should, causing various physical discomforts. So fundamental are the regular rhythms of waking and sleep to our being that_____53_____ them is similar to altering our center of gravity.
In a very real sense, light pollution causes us to_____54_____ our true place in the universe, to forget the scale of our being, which is best_____55_____ against the dimensions of a deep night with the Milky Way — the edge of our galaxy — arching overhead.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
By my mid-20s, I’d finished my master in psychology, and I was working in Dublin as a health researcher. It was mostly data and statistics work staring at a screen. I was earning more than most of my friends, living the city life, going out at weekends. I had a good pension (养老金) and annual leave but it caused a lot of anxiety and worry.I was really unhappy.
I wanted to get back to feeling passionate about something so I started thinking about the things I used to love. As a child, I’d always been involved in the outdoors, and I used to love hiking but all that had stopped after secondary school. I decided to volunteer with a local youth group and within a month, I’d gone camping with them. I absolutely loved it. It was likes witching on a lightbulb. This was what I’d been missing.
I started taking courses in mountain skills and wilderness first aid, and by August I was working my usual job in the week, and I was a climbing club leader at weekends. I loved connecting with nature, connecting with other people.
Through all this, I learnt about the whole field of nature-based therapies (疗法). It was the perfect fit to combine my psychology background with my passion for the outdoors. I began taking courses in wild therapy, forest bathing and ecopsychology. I left my government job and in July 2020 I launched my business Nature Therapy Ireland, which is booming now.
I’d thought I’d always live in a city but last year, I moved to Tipperary to live at the foot of a mountain, surrounded by nature. If I’m feeling stressed, I can step outside in my bare feet and stand on the grass to ground myself. In Dublin, the front door felt like a barrier—I had to have my keys, my phone, my jacket before I could even go out and find a green space. My life now is leading nature connection hikes and forest bathing walks. My salary has halved for the moment but I’ve adjusted. I’ve never looked back.

Your emotion helps you make sense of the world. At the core of an emotion is a subjective experience of the valence of it — what emotion scientists call “affect” (情感). Generally speaking, affect is what we are most focused on. Do you have chocolate cake in front of you That’s good! Do you see a spider on the table! That’s bad!
Your affective reactions tell you which experiences are desirable, and which aren’t, but the total emotional experience includes all you do and think. You can learn a lot by observing and describing them. You can also learn a lot by appreciating their secret life.
The problem is: the affective features of emotions tend to dominate. Our subjective valence of emotion is almost all we can see. When emotions are only about what is pleasant or unpleasant in subjective experience right now, the more important features of emotion disappear.
If you can slow down and expand; if you stop running or clinging (沉浸其中) and adopt a sense of curiosity, emotions become more subtle and different. When fear comes up, don’t walk away so that fear dissipates. Instead, stay. Allow yourself to feel the nervousness, the sweating, and everything else that comes along with it. It is one of the hardest things to do in life, but it’s also one of the most rewarding. If you run, you are telling basic parts of your brain, “I guess this threat really was real. I better stay away from it.” You are training yourself to fear, regardless of that situation. If you cling, you are saying, “Escape from this emotion is a threat”, and since it is not a happy experience, happiness slips through your hands like sand.
Note that you can not fool yourself. Just allow the full emotion. You will never enter into their secret life until you stop running or clinging. To control your life, you need to actively train your emotions to be your ally (同盟). Observe. Describe. Appreciate. Do that and you may find you have allies for healthy living that were there all along.
63.Why does the author mention “chocolate cake” and “spider” in paragraph 1
A.To explain the complex response of emotions.
B.To show the subjective experience of emotions.
C.To indicate the goodness and badness of the world.
D.To emphasize the significance of emotions in life.
64.What is the consequence if you just focus on your present feelings
A.The present feelings are less obvious.
B.The subjective emotions are less powerful.
C.The overall picture of emotions is easier to ignore.
D.The observation and description of emotions are easier.
65.What does the underlined word “dissipates” in Paragraph 4 probably refer to
A.Deepens. B.Spreads.
C.Disappears. D.Sticks.
66.What is the text mainly about
A.The secret of emotions. B.The subjective experience.
C.The importance of allies in life. D.Magical functions of emotions.
Section C
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.
The explosion of new media, ranging from the internet to digital television, means that people working in advertising will have to come up with more ways to catch the public’s attention in the future.____67____ No longer will all members be watching the same programme: some will be watching different channels on their own TVs, surfing the net or doing both at the same time. The advertising industry will have to work “harder and smarter” to cut through the “mess” of the future with a wide range of new media, all competing to catch the consumers’ eyes.
People have become more individual in their consumption of advertising. New technology has made experimenting with new forms of advertising possible. The monologue where the advertisement tells housewives that this is the washing powder they should buy is just a cliché (陈词滥调) now. ____68____ There is, consequently, little hope of them surviving for more than another twenty years. A much closer relationship with the consumer is gradually being created.
The definition of what constitutes advertising will expand well beyond the conventional mass media. Shopping environments will themselves become a part of the advertising process. Increasingly, they will exist not simply to sell goods, but also to entertain people and to make sure that they enjoy their time there. The aim will be to “warm” people towards these places so that they will return to purchase goods there again.
In spite of these and other changes, it is highly unlikely that TV, print and radio will disappear altogether as advertising media. ____69____ But other marketing strategies, such as public relations and direct marketing, will become as important as advertising. Advertising agencies will have to reinvent themselves. They will no longer be able simply to produce advertisements and then support these through PR, direct marketing or the internet. Instead, they will have to change the whole way they look at communication and start thinking about ideas which are not specific to one discipline.
____70____ Originality of thinking has always been in short supply. It will continue to be so in the future. But there will be increasing coston the advertiser’s ability to be imaginative and to think laterally about engaging the consumer in a broader variety of media.
A.Thus, creativity will be the most valuable thing in the future. B.Customers are expected to pay more money for the extra-special qualities. C.The internet, for example, has made such ads look old-fashioned. D.It has made possible a situation in which customers can tell advertisers what they think. E.Contrarily, there is almost certain to be an increase in every form of advertising in future years. F.The traditional TV advertising campaign will not reach the whole family any more.
IV.Summary Writing
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point( s)of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Advertising Objectives
When developing a successful advertising campaign, marketers must first set an advertising objective. The objective is the purpose for the advertising campaign. There are four main advertising objectives—to inform, to persuade, to compare, or to remind.
Companies use informative advertising to give information about a new type of product. In this case, the purpose is to increase demand for the new product. DVD players are a good example. The first sellers of these products had to tell consumers about the quality and convenience of the new product. Big sales soon followed.
However, informative advertising doesn’t work so well when there are many companies with the same kind of product. This is because consumers already know the normal features of the product. Instead, they need to see how one company’s version is better than all the others. This kind of advertising is called persuasive advertising. For instance, when DVD players became common, Sony began trying to persuade customers that its brand has the best quality for their money to keep sales high.
Comparative advertising also tries to persuade. Thus it is really a kind of persuasive advertising. In this, a company compares its brand with one or more other parative advertising has been used for products from soft drinks to car rentals and credit cards. An example is Avis, a car rental company, which compared itself with its bigger rival Hertz by claiming, “We’re number two, so we try harder ”
A different kind of advertising is reminder advertising, which is important for products later in their life. Unlike the other types, its objective is to help to keep strong relationships with customers and to keep them thinking about the product. This is why expensive Coca-Cola television ads mainly build and maintain the Coca-Cola brand relationship, rather than trying to inform or persuade people to buy the drink straight away.

“simple that business is”是感叹句,修饰形容词simple应用how,故填how。
both...and...

故填could。
句子描述客观事实,时态用一般现在时,“That you are earning more money than ever before”是主语从句,谓语动词用单数,因此空格处用第三人称单数indicates。故填indicates。
根据句意和it is可知,句子是强调句,结构是“it is/was+被强调的部分+who/that+其他部分”,句中被强调的是“its customer service”,因此空格处用that,故填that。

Wild as these notions may sound, everyone has its ____39____ (and opposers) in the scientific community as well as its striking commercial application. As two critics of genetic engineering, Jeremy Rifkin and Ted Howard, state in their book Who Should Play God “Broad scale genetic engineering will probably be introduced to America much the same way as assembly lines, automobiles, vaccines, computers and all the other technologies. As each new genetic advance becomes ____40____ practical, a new consumer need will be exploited and a market for the new technology will be created.”

A. consequences结果;B. achievements成就;C. agreement同意;D. circumstances情况。 故选A项。
A. 根据上文“Light pollution is largely the result of bad lighting design. (光污染在很大程度上是不良照明设计的结果)”可知,本文探讨的光污染与不良照明设计关系密切,即拙劣设计的照明。故选C项。
43.考查动词词义辨析。句意:拙劣设计的的照明消除夜晚的黑暗,改变包括我们在内的许多生命形式所适应的光线水平和光线节奏。A. appealed呼吁;B. adapted使适应;C. objected反对;D. amounted共计。
A. come under criticism遭受批评;B. made no difference没区别;C. come into effect生效;D. made no sense没意义。根据下文“Imagine walking towards London on a moonlit night around 1800, when it was Earth’s most populous city. (想象一下,大概在1800年,在一个月明的夜晚走向伦敦这个地球上人口最多的城市)”可知,人类历史上很长一段时间大家并没意识到光污染这件事情,因此“光污染”这一短语毫无意义。故选D项。
45.考查动词短语辨析。句意:近一百万人住在那里,像往常一样,凑合着使用蜡烛、火把和灯笼。A. making do with凑合着用;B. fed up with使对……厌烦;C. identifying with认同;D. overflowing with充满。根据下文“Only a few houses were lit by gas (只有几所房子被煤气点亮)”可知,许多家庭无法使用煤气灯,凑合使用蜡烛等照明。故选A项。
A. visit参观;B. greet打招呼;C. feel感受;D. smell闻。
根据下文“Light is a powerful biological force, and on many species it acts as a magnet attracting them to it.
A. exposed暴露;B. captured捕获;C. dismissed解雇;D. frustrated使受挫。根据上文“Light is a powerful biological force, and on many species it acts as a magnet attracting them to it. (光是一种强大的生物力,对许多物种来说,它就像一块磁铁,吸引着它们)”可知,这些鸣禽海鸟被陆地上的探照灯或海洋石油平台上的废气燃烧器产生的灯光吸引,最终掉落,可以比喻为被捕获。故选B项。
49.考查形容词词义辨析。句意:与天文学家不同,我们大多数人的工作可能不需要清晰的夜空。A. clear清楚的;B. comprehensive全面的;C. traditional传统的;D. critical批评的。根据上文“It was once thought that light pollution only affected astronomers, who need to see the night sky in all its glorious clarity. (曾经有人认为光污染只会影响天文学家,他们需要看到夜空的明亮)”可知,此处把天文学家和大多数普通人作对比,天文学家需要清晰的夜空,而普通人不需要。故选A项。
A. Subsequently随后;B. However然而;C. Therefore因此;D. Similarly相似地。根据上文“Unlike astronomers, most of us may not need a clear view of the night sky for our work. (与天文学家不同,我们大多数人的工作可能不需要清晰的夜空)”可知,这与下文“我们的确需要黑暗”形成转折关系。故选B项。
51.考查动词词义辨析。句意:否认黑暗是无意义的。A. Reviewing复习;B. Embracing拥抱;C. Denying否认;D. Regulating调节。根据下文“It is as essential to maintaining our biological welfare as light itself (它对维持我们的生物福利和光本身一样重要)”可知,此处it指代的“黑暗”本身对我们生物而言很重要,和光线一样必不可少,因此我们不能否认它。故选C项。
A. light光;B. rhythm节奏;C. status身份;D. dawn黎明。根据上文“Denying darkness is pointless. (否认黑暗是无意义的)”可知,前后两句在对比黑暗和光线,二者一样重要,空格处应该填light“光”。故选A项。

A. keep track of了解……的动态;B. lose sight of看不见;C. catch hold of抓住;D. let go of放开。
A. measured衡量;B. neutralized使无效;C. undergone经受;D. supervised监督。根据上文“light pollution causes us to lose sight of our true place in the universe, to forget the scale of our being (光污染使我们看不到我们在宇宙中的真实位置,忘记了我们人类存在的规模)”可知,此处所提到的“我们在宇宙中的真实位置”以及“我们人类存在的规模”都是我们应该清楚的东西,而清楚的方式就是用黑夜来进行对比,词组measure against意为“使相比较,衡量”符合语境。故选A项。

根据文章第二段“Immersive art is not just a technical way to represent video and audio in huge spaces. The word immersive indicates a deep commitment of intentions which connect images and sounds in a way that the audience is able to experience a different way of the art.(沉浸式艺术不仅仅是在巨大空间中表现视频和音频的技术方法。沉浸式这个词表明了一种深刻的意图,通过将图像和声音连接起来,让观众能够体验到一种不同的艺术方式)”以及第三段“True to its name, this exhibition transforms the iconic paintings of Vincent van Gogh into moving, wall-filling projections. “Immersive Van Gogh” promises half-a-million cubic feet of projections that pull from some of the post-impressionist’s most recognizable pieces, including The Bedroom, Sunflowers and, yes, The Starry Night.(正如它的名字一样,这次展览将文森特·梵高的标志性画作变成了移动的、充满墙壁的投影。Immersive Van Gogh承诺将使用50万立方英尺的投影,呈现出印象派最著名的作品,包括《卧室》、《向日葵》,没错,还有《星夜》)”可知,沉浸式艺术是一种将图像和声音连接起来的新型艺术形式。本次梵高绘画展演就是要通过沉浸式艺术展现。由此推知,本次展演将通过一种新的方式呈现。故选A。
根据文章第五段“To be announced before the exhibit opens, existing ticket holders will receive an email with the place name and location once it is made public.(在展览开始前宣布,一旦公开,现有的门票持有者将收到一封附有地点和地点的电子邮件)”可知,想要得到本次展演的确切地点,只能通过电子邮件。故选A。
根据题干“a couple with a 5-year-old child who would like to own a Van Gogh cushion (一对夫妇和一个5岁的孩子,并且想拥有一个梵高坐垫)”可知,一共有两个成人,一个五岁的小孩,并且想要梵高坐垫。再结合“Ages 6—16 (children 5 and under do not require a ticket)”可知,五岁以下的小孩不需要门票。再根据题干中“own a Van Gogh cushion”可知,想要得到一份Van Gogh cushion必须其中一人购买VIP TICKETS,即需要$99.99。 所以a couple with a 5-year-old child who would like to own a Van Gogh cushion (一对夫妇和一个5岁的孩子,并且想拥有一个梵高坐垫)至少需要$154.98。故选B。
(C)
【答案】63.B 64.C 65.C 66.A
由第一段中的“At the core of an emotion is a subjective experience of the valence of it — what emotion scientists call “affect” (情感). Generally speaking, affect is what we are most focused on. Do you have chocolate cake in front of you That’s good! Do you see a spider on the table! That’s bad! (情绪的核心是对情感价值的主观体验,情感科学家称之为““affect” (情感)”。一般来说,情感是我们最关注的。你面前有巧克力蛋糕吗?太好了!你看见桌子上有蜘蛛吗!太糟糕了!)”可知,情绪的核心是对情感价值的主观体验,后面举例巧克力蛋糕和蜘蛛是为了论述这句话,表现情感的主观体验。故选B项。
64.细节理解题。由第三段中的“Our subjective valence of emotion is almost all we can see. When emotions are only about what is pleasant or unpleasant in subjective experience right now, the more important features of emotion disappear. (我们的主观情感价值几乎是我们所能看到的。当情绪只与当前主观体验中的愉快或不愉快有关时,情绪中更重要的特征就消失了)”可知,如果你只关注你现在的感受,后果是情绪的整体情况更容易被忽视。故选C项。
65.词句猜测题。由第四段中的“If you can slow down and expand; if you stop running or clinging (沉浸其中) and adopt a sense of curiosity, emotions become more subtle and different. When fear comes up, don’t walk away so that fear dissipates.
由第二段中的“You can also learn a lot by appreciating their secret life. (通过欣赏情感的秘密生活,你也可以学到很多东西)”和最后一段中的“Just allow the full emotion. You will never enter into their secret life until you stop running or clinging. (只需要充分的情感。你永远不会进入它们的秘密生活,除非你停止奔跑或沉浸其中)”可知,文章主要介绍了情感的秘密有哪些,包括情绪情感的核心,以及如何更好控制它们,成为情绪的盟友,A项“情感的秘密”符合文意。故选A项。
【答案】67.F 68.C 69.E 70.A
67.上文“The explosion of new media, ranging from the internet to digital television, means that people working in advertising will have to come up with more ways to catch the public’s attention in the future.(从互联网到数字电视,新媒体的迅猛发展意味着广告业今后将不得不想出更多的办法来吸引公众的注意力。)”引出主题,说明新媒体对广告业的影响,下文“No longer will all members be watching the same programme: some will be watching different channels on their own TVs, surfing the net or doing both at the same time.(所有成员将不再观看同一节目:一些人将在自己的电视上看不同的频道,上网或两者都做。)”说明传统电视广告对所有家庭成员影响减弱的原因,F项“The traditional TV advertising campaign will not reach the whole family any more.(传统的电视广告活动将不再影响到整个家庭。)”
68.上文“The monologue where the advertisement tells housewives that this is the washing powder they should buy is just a cliché (陈词滥调) now.(广告告诉家庭主妇们这是她们应该买的洗衣粉的独白现在只是陈词滥调。)”说明独白的广告形式已经过时,C项“The internet, for example, has made such ads look old-fashioned.(例如,互联网让这样的广告显得过时了。)”
69.上文“In spite of these and other changes, it is highly unlikely that TV, print and radio will disappear altogether as advertising media.(尽管发生了这些和其他变化,但电视、印刷和广播作为广告媒体将完全消失是极不可能的。)”说明传统的广告媒体不可能完全消失,E项“Contrarily, there is almost certain to be an increase in every form of advertising in future years.(相反,几乎可以肯定的是,在未来的几年里,各种形式的广告都会有增长。)”
70.下文“Originality of thinking has always been in short supply.(思维的独创性一直是稀缺的。)”说明创造性思维很珍贵的原因,A项“Thus, creativity will be the most valuable thing in the future.(因此,创造力将是未来最有价值的东西。)” 故选A项。
IV.Summary Writing

Dear editors,
I know you’re going to set up new programs on line. So I’m writing to suggest two programs---“Reading for Fun” and “Homework Guidance” as an online learner.
First of all, I think reading is of great significance to the whole life of people. “Reading for Fun” can create a good language environment for online learners, broaden their horizons, and encourage them to absorb rich language, in order that learners can better use the language.
Secondly, homework allows us to master what we have learned, which can deepen understanding and memory. However, many of our students’ parents are usually busy and have no time to guide their homework. And students do homework at home, where there no teachers. “Homework Guidance” not only can help complete homework, but also can improve the enthusiasm of students. Besides, under the guidance of the program, students can develop good study habits and not worry about their homework any more.
That's why I recommend the two programs. I am sure they will be well-received by the online learners. I hope you can take my suggestion into consideration.
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua

Listening Comprehension Section A
Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and the question about it, read the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.
M: Hurry up! Otherwise we would be late for the meeting.
W: Oh no! The needle is on “Empty.” I thought the tank was half full! Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place
M: What time do you usually go home from work
W: Oh, I usually finish my work at 5:45 and spend an hour on the way. But if there’s a traffic jam, it will be 7:45. Last night, I got home very late at 8:45.
Q: When does the woman usually get home from work
W: No one told me that Caroline was in hospital.
M: Sorry. I meant to give you a call when I found out but it slipped my mind. Q: What does the man mean
M: Hey, I’d like to take some time off in July, when the kids are out of school. What shall I do W: Oh, you’ve got to submit a form to Human Resources.
Q: What is the man going to do in July
M: Oh, no. The X-Mobile dropped my call again, right in the middle of the conversation! W: I hardly ever get dropped with Y-Mobile, and long-distance calls in Germany are free. Q: What is the man’s problem
W: What time are we setting off on a mountain-climbing trip, Dad
M: At ten o’clock or so. Depends on what time Angela arrives. She’s usually behind schedule. Q: What do we know about Angela
M: We have had two new employees coming from other offices. Do you know them
W: Yeah, John is the most generous guy in the company who often pays for others’ meals while Tony is exactly the opposite.
Q: What does the woman think of Tony
M: Mandy, I’m disappointed with your work lately. You’ve been late three times in the past month, and last week you gave shoes of a wrong size to a customer.
W: Sorry, Mr. Jefferson. I promise to be more careful.
Q: What’s the most probable relationship between the two speakers
W: Do you know that Jack of your class has won the school’s debate competition
M: Wait! Are we talking about the Jack who is always too quiet to be noticed in class Q: What does the man mean
W: I heard that you went to the calligraphy exhibition. How was it
M: To an art idiot like me, sitting at home watching a soap opera would be a better investment of time.
Q: What does the man imply
Section B
Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages and one longer conversation, and you will be asked several questions on each of the passages and the conversation. The passages and the conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Leisure is threatening Japanese traditions. As part of its attempt to increase imports, the government is trying to get people to work less and spend more (11) while workers are turning their back on the attempt. The figures support the Western prejudice that the Japanese are all work and no play. Trying to force workers away from their desks and machines, the government said last April that the country should cut down from its 2,100 hours average work year to 1,899 hours but some persuasion will be needed. Small companies are very angry about it and they fear competitors may not cut hours. The unions are no happier: they have even advertised in newspapers arguing their case against the foreign pressure that is forcing leisure upon them. They say that shorter hours are a disguised pay cut. The industrialists, who have no objection to the government’s plans, admit that shorter hours will help them cut costs.(12) Younger Japanese who are supposed to be acting against their hard-working parents, show no sign of wanting time off, either. But unlike older workers, they do spend money in their spare time.(13) Not content with watching television, they dance, dress up, sit in cafes, go to pop concerts and generally drive the leisure-industry boom. Now that they know how to consume, maybe the West can teach them to relax and enjoy themselves, too.
Questions:
Why does the government want the Japanese to have more spare time
Which group of people in Japan are in favor of the shorter-hour system
What do we learn about the younger Japanese according to the passage
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
There is no doubt that adults, and even highly educated adults, vary greatly in the speed and efficiency of their reading.(14) Some proceed very slowly throughout; others dash along too quickly and then have to go back over what has already been read. Poor readers in particular may lack the ability to vary their manner of reading based on the type of reading material and according to their intentions in reading it. A good reader can move at great speed through the text of a novel or similar light reading matter (15). He may be able to skim a page, picking up a word or two here and there, and gain a general idea of what the text is about without really reading it. In reading more difficult material, with the intention of taking in the whole of it, he will proceed more slowly, but even then he will vary his pace, concentrating on the key words and passages, perhaps re-reading them several times and pass more quickly over the remainder. A less efficient reader tends to maintain the same speed whatever the material he reads.(16) Consequently, even light reading matter gives him little pleasure because he reads so slowly. But this pace may be too fast for really difficult material which requires special concentration at difficult points.
Questions:
What idea does the speaker mainly want to convey
How do good readers deal with light reading matter
What is typical of inefficient readers in terms of reading speed
Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.
M: Hello, and welcome to our program (17), Working Abroad. Our guest this evening is a Londoner, who lives and works in Italy. Her name’s Susan Hill. Susan, welcome to the program. You live in Florence. How long have you been living there
W: Since 1982. I had meant to stay for only six months but later decided to live there permanently.(18)
M: Why did you change your mind
W: Well, I’m a designer, I design leather goods, mainly shoes, and handbags. Soon after I arrived in Florence, I got a job with one of Italy’s top fashion houses, Ferragamo. So, I decided to stay.
M: How lucky! Do you still work for Ferragamo
W: No, I’ve been a freelance designer for quite a long time now.(19) Since 1988, in fact. M: So, does that mean you design for several different companies now
W: Yes, that’s right. I design many fashion items for a number of Italian companies, and during the last four years, I’ve also been designing for the British company Burberry’s.
M: What have you been designing them
W: Mostly handbags, and small leather goods.
M: How’s the fashion industry in Italy changed since 1982
W: Well, it’s become a lot more competitive,(20) because the quality of products from other countries has improved a lot. But its high quality and design is still world-famous.
M: And do you ever think of returning to England
W: No, not really. Working in Italy is more interesting. I also love the Mediterranean sun and the Italian lifestyle.
M: Well, thank you for talking to us, Susan.
W: It was a pleasure.
Questions:
Where does this conversation most probably take place
What was the woman’s final decision when she went to Florence
What has the woman been doing for a living since 1988
What do we learn about the change in Italy’s fashion industry
