The idea of growing meat outside an animal has been around for a long time. In 1931, Winston Churchill wrote that by the 1980s“we shall escape the absurdity (荒谬) of growing a whole chicken in order to eat the breast or wing, by growing these parts separately under a suitable medium.” It seems that his predictions are beginning to materialise. Due to the rising global demand for meat, the world turns to cultured meat to overcome the environmental problems of traditional animal agriculture.
The science behind cultured meat is fairly well established. A sample of cells is first taken from a live animal and these cells are fed growth medium that enables them to grow and divide, allowing trillions of cells to be produced from a small sample. Once enough cells have been produced, they are turned into developed muscle and fat cells through a certain process. Standard food processing technologies are then used to form the final product—meat.
Investors have responded optimistically, with cultured meat start-ups raising over$125 million since 2015 and investments growing by 85% between 2017 and 2018. High profile backers include Bill Gates, Richard Branson and Google co-founder Serge y Brin, who helped fund(资助) the first cultured burger in 2013.
Despite this optimism, cultured meat still has a long way to go before it appears on our dinner tables. The first cultured burger famously cost $280,000 to produce and, though costs have come down considerably since then, the price of production remains a challenge. Another major challenge facing the cultured meat industry is government regulation. No legal right has yet approved cultured meat for consumption.
Josh Tetrick, CEO of JUST, has claimed that the company’s cultured chicken nuggets have been ready for small scale (规模) commercialisation since 2018. However, Uma Valeti, CEO of Memphis Meats, has emphasized the importance of taking time to get the release right. Regardless of companies’intentions, it is unlikely that cultured meat will find its way onto supermarket soon. Instead the first products will likely appear in selected restaurants in a limited release, reserved for the more adventurous and wealthy diners.
8. What does the underlined word “materialise” in paragraph 1 mean
A. come near B. come true C. become clear D. take action
9. What is true about cultured meat
A. Cultured meat results in growing environmental problems.
B. Cultured meat is produced with the help of cells from animals.
C. Cultured meat tastes similar to the traditional meat from animals.

10. What’s the author’s purpose in writing Para 3
A. To show investors felt confident in the future of cultured meat.
B. To show investors earned much money from the selling of cultured meat.
C. To show investors invested much money in the making of cultured meat.
D. To show investors contributed a lot to the first cultured meat.

C. Meat Production: In Lab or in Farm
D. Meat Production: To Be a Problem
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11. A

It cannot conduct interviews, find historical documents, or assess the quality of studies. It lacks authority, understanding, and the ability to correct itself or generate genuinely new ideas.
This implies that while AI may create a vast amount of simpler content, it could also make original journalism more valuable and investigative journalists more productive. AI may be able to make summaries of public meetings, but it is humans who will write in-depth stories. Experts believe that AI will ultimately help people use their professional knowledge more effectively, and allow them to focus on areas where human intelligence is crucial.

When I was a twelve-year-old girl, I was so addicted to chatting online that some people even called me CyberSara. My mom, a lawyer, always complained that I spent too much time chatting with my Internet friends.
One day I got an instant message from a kid I didn’t know. His name was Bradley, who said he was twelve and lived in New York. He asked if he could be my secret friend, and I thought that seemed pretty cool. Within a few days’ chatting, I found that we both loved to play soccer, even though I didn’t play as much as I used to. To my great joy, we both loved playing computer games very much.
Every day, Bradley and I chatted and emailed each other. We became best friends. He was interesting and seemed kind of smart—actually, much smarter than the typical (典型的,平常的) twelve-year-old boys I knew. I really liked chatting with him. He told me he really liked me. Bradley kept telling me New York was a cool place to live and emailed me amazing pictures of extremely tall skyscrapers (摩天大楼). He asked me where I lived. I told him I lived in Tampa. One day, Bradley shared good news with me that he was coming to Tampa with his parents. He invited me to have a secret meeting and go for ice cream with him in the ice-cream shop near my school. Eager to find what my secret Internet friend was like, I promised to keep it a secret, not telling my parents about our plan.
I was excited that I was finally going to meet Bradley after months of chatting. However, he refused to send me a picture of himself, saying he didn’t want to ruin the surprise. It made me quite confused. Was there something wrong with him Was he a weird (奇怪的) guy who was not confident enough to show a picture of himself But he said everyone in his school thought he was the cutest boy in his class, so I thought he had to be normal.

【答案】参考范文:
The next day, I accidentally told Mom that I would meet my Internet friend alone. Upon hearing that, she began annoying me with a ton of questions, with her face full of anxiety. I eventually told her that Bradley was going to take me for ice cream near my school. “No. Never will you meet a stranger all alone. You are just a 12-year-old girl!”, mom was beside herself with rage when I showed my determination to go. This was the first time in my life that I had witnessed my elegant lawyer mom lose temper. So furious was she that I had no choice but to bring her together. We prepared and drove to the ice-cream shop.
The moment we entered the ice-cream shop, there was no one but a weird grown-up. Noticing his strange appearance, I was enveloped by a sense of fear and clenched mom’s hands tightly. “Who are you Are you Bradley ” asked my mom. Shocked and speechless, the man sprang from the chair, attempting to flee away. But it was too late. Mom grasped his hand with all her might and asked me to call the police. Finally, my plan with the secret Internet friend ended up with a narrow escape from being cheated. Whenever I recalled the unusual experience, fear still lingered in my mind mixed with a sense of relief. Neither should we meet Internet friend without informing parents, nor should we share private information on the Internet.

ChatGPT is an amazing artificial intelligence tool that has recently been released, along with other mind-blowing generative (生成性的) AI tools like Midjourney and DALL-E. These tools have the potential to revolutionize the way we create digital content, making it faster and cheaper.
However, there is a downside to these AI tools that cannot be ignored. This implies that while AI may create a vast amount of simpler content, it could also make original journalism more valuable and investigative journalists more productive. AI may be able to make summaries of public meetings, but it is humans who will write in-depth stories. When I was a twelve-year-old girl I was so addicted to chatting online that some people even called me CyberSara.
