Manners have developed (发展) for over thousands of years. In order to live closer together, humans in old times learned to think about others. Through the years, the manners have changed a lot. But some of them are still used. For example, why are you told to keep your elbows (肘) off the table The rule started from the Middle Ages. At that time, tables were just a big board placed on a stump (树桩). Keeping your elbows on the table could easily tip it and make everyone lose his food.
Today, it’s not good manners to play with your phone at the table, because it sends a message that you aren’t interested in the people around you. People had the same feeling about that kind of thing before they had phones. The US President Jimmy Carter’s 9-year-old daughter, Amy, caused a manners outcry (强烈抗议) more than 30 years ago when she was found reading at the table at a formal White House dinner.
No matter how manners change, they are always doing the same thing—making other people feel comfortable and respected (受尊重的), which also helps friendships develop.

British people are well known for the amount(量)of tea that they drink. Each person in the UK drinks about 1.9kg of tea every year. That's around 876 cups of tea. Tea is drunk by all sections(阶层)of society. But tea does not grow in Britain. Most of the tea is grown in India and China. So, how did it become an important part of British culture
Tea arrived in London in the 1600s. At this time British ships were exploring(探索)the world and came across the drink in China. It was not long before green tea was available(可购得的)to buy. However, this was only available to the richer sections of society.
At the beginning of the 1700s the amount of tea arriving in Britain increased. Black tea arrived at this time. At first people drank this tea exactly as it was in China. They soon found that it mixed really well with a little milk and sugar, giving it a special taste.
In the 1800s tea was still a thing enjoyed only by people with money. At this time they began to have "afternoon tea". People drink tea with a snack around 4 p.m. so that they don't feel hungry between lunch and dinner. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less popular in recent times.
In the late 1800s, the price of tea went down as more tea began to arrive on ships from India and China. It was no longer a drink just for rich people. Tearooms—shops where you could buy and drink tea, started to appear(出现)across the country. At the start of the 20th century, people of all sections began to drink tea.

It’s late at night. A car stops in the middle of a forest. After dropping off their three teenagers, the parents say “good luck” and drive away. The teenagers, totally lost, have to find their way back home by themselves.
It may sound crazy to you, but this is a tradition with a long history for Dutch parents called “dropping”. Dutch people believe that children should not depend(依赖)too much on their parents and should learn how to solve problems through activities like “dropping”.
However, for many other parents around the world, their top worry is their children’s safety. After all, why should they put their children at risk when there are many other ways to develop their independence(独立性)
People have many different opinions about parenting. All parents want their children to be happy, healthy and successful. In China, for example, many parents spend much money on summer vacation activities for their children. They want their children to enjoy their vacation as much as possible.
But some parents try too hard and become “helicopter (直 升 机 ) parents” – just the opposite of “dropping”. They worry too much about their children and pay attention to everything they do – like helicopters flying over their children. In their eyes, children need to be protected all the time.
But this might not be a good parenting style either, according to American parenting expert Kenneth Ginsburg. As Ginsburg writes, parents should keep a balance(平衡) by “making sure their children don’t crash against the rocks, but allowing them to ride the waves.”
( )38. For Dutch people, “dropping” can help children .
A. learn how to solve problems B. find their homes in forests

I started learning English at the age of 22. It is kind of late to start studying a new language. However, age is never a problem if you really want to learn something.
I was preparing myself to study engineering in the USA. To enter my dream college, I had to get a TOEFL score (托福分数) of 90 or higher. After careful thought, I signed up for (报名参加) a six-month programme to study English.
It was difficult to get 90 in six months for someone who started learning English from the very beginning, but I decided to have a try. In order to join the programme, I moved to a different city and rented (租用) a house with a friend. We were in the same programme. We did not have any distractions (使人分心的事物) in our house, such as televisions, computers or smartphones.
We had classes every day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a lunch break only. After the classes were over, we had something for dinner and started reviewing what we had learned and doing homework. We would study until we became sleepy and usually, we would finish it by midnight.
My friend and I encouraged (鼓励) each other and we did our best. Luckily, we both got perfect TOEFL scores and went to the USA at last.
