Taylor Swift showed very early promise as a singer of country songs, performing from the age of nine. She learned the guitar and persuaded her family to move to Tennessee so she could further her career. She holds numerous records for achievements in music, has been named among the top 100 most influential people on more than one occasion and was named as Woman of the Decade and Artist of the Decade in the 2010s. Swift's musical style has evolved from country to pop and her fans number in the millions.
Taylor Swift has a firm belief that we should all be ourselves. She tempers this by saying that we must be respectful of others, honest and strong-willed. Strength of purpose will carry a person through life and see them achieve great things. Do not, she says, be average. Stand out and be the best person that you can.
Her view of life is simple. We each have one life, and we must make sure we do not waste it. Life is there to be enjoyed and to be fulfilled. Only we can control what happens in our lives, and must not allow others to judge us or create false opinions of us.
To live a life that has meaning, we must be prepared to learn from mistakes and failures and deal with them without getting discouraged or distracted from our path. No one should tell you what you can't do, and you must not let a mistake tell you that either. When someone tries to stop you from doing something, be eager to prove them wrong. Be keen, too, to show that your mistakes won't hold you back.
Taylor Swift puts great store in happiness. Seeking happiness is a wonderful ambition, and everyone should see it as an aim. Success without happiness is a meaningless achievement. Aiming for happiness can go along with other goals too. Swift doesn't rest when she has achieved one goal, but picks up another and pursues that with the same vigor and determination.

Eating insects is one of those ideas that never quite seem to catch on. The United Nations supported the idea a decade ago, but, in the West at least, insects remain mostly absent from supermarket shelves. Faced with this situation, scientists have been exploring other options. One is to feed insects to farm animals, which are not so picky.
Of course, insects need to eat, too. To date, they have mostly been raised on leftover chicken feed. But the supply of that is limited, and if insect-raised meat is to take off, new sources will be needed. In a paper in the Journal of Applied Entomology, Niels Thomas Eriksen, a biochemist at Aalborg University, suggests feeding them on the waste products of the beer industry.
The world knocks back around 185 billion litres of beer every year. Each litre produces between three and ten litres of wastewater full of abandoned substances that are richer in protein but not in carbohydrates (碳水化合物) , especially compared with chicken feed. Most insects grown for feed depend, in the wild, on the carbohydrates found in fruit which goes bad. Whether insects would actually consider beer waste square meal was, therefore, unclear.
The researchers used the baby black soldier flies. The insects were divided into three groups, which were offered beer waste, chicken feed and a mixture of both respectively. The researchers monitored both their weight gain and the amount of carbon dioxide they breathed out, which helped assess the insects' metabolic (新陈代谢的) performance. The babies happily consumed both beer waste and chicken feed, and grew equally well on either food source. When Dr Eriksen made further chemical analysis, he found few differences in the nutrients needed for farm animals' growth.
What the researchers found is good news for some other industries whose waste is likewise plentiful and protein-rich, and they now look to be reasonable targets for nutrient recycling by insects. Whether consumers will be willing to eat insect-raised meat, though, remains to be seen.
8.What do we know about eating insects in the beginning
A.It will probably catch on soon.
B.Most westerners shy away from it.
C.It is supported in most of the world.
D.Most scientists turn down this idea.
9.Why were the researchers initially unsure of beer waste as insect feed
A.Its supply is not enough.
B.It contains too much protein.
C.It lacks necessary carbohydrates.
D.Its chemical contents are unknown.
10.What did the researchers find about the insects
A.They preferred to eat chicken feed.
B.They grew fastest on beer waste.
C.They could turn beer waste into meat.
D.They needed more food than expected.
11.What does the author indicate in the last paragraph
A.Some industries rarely recycle their waste.
B.The practical application of the findings is limited.
C.Insect-raised meat is likely to be the next fashion.
D.The experiment has an outlook beyond the beer industry.
D
There's nothing wrong with a tomato that isn't perfectly round or a peach with an extra dimple or two; they still carry the same benefits and flavors as the versions we're used to seeing in grocery stores Farmers throw away these imperfect items, as many grocery chains won't buy them for fear that they are unsellable. However, a growing group of grocery chains are fighting to make these discarded fruit and vegetables part of consumers' buying habits.
One such business is Imperfect Produce, a start-up that provides fresh ugly produce for consumers. Through this service, you can get up to 20 pounds of fruit and vegetables for around $20 a week. This is about a 30 percent discount compared to what's now sold in stores. Recently, the company had a major advancement when Whole Foods Market accepted their partnership and agreed to sell the misshapen produce.
While this movement might be a new trend here in the U.S., it's already gained serious momentum (势头) in Europe. In 2014, the EU announced the European Year Against Food Waste, with French supermarket chain Intermarché launching a very successful campaign called Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables and England's Waitrose selling weather blemished apples. In Portugal, a similar company to Imperfect Produce called Fruta Feia has also taken off.
Buying the unfortunate-looking produce should be attractive to consumers not only because of the affordability, but also because of the support it gives to farmers and the direct impact it has on reducing food waste and environmental pollution. When the discarded fruit and vegetables decompose, they release(释放) methane (CH.), a greenhouse gas. When released into the air, it is about 86 times as powerful as carbon dioxide (CO,) over a 20-year period. Waste is, in fact, the ugliest thing of all.
12. What does the underlined word " discarded" in paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Thrown away. B.Harvested. C.Eaten up. D.Packaged.
13.What is the purpose of Imperfect Produce
A.To make better profits.
B.To sell unattractive goods.
C.To get discounts from farmers.
D.To compete with Whole Foods Market.
14. What can we learn about Europe from paragraph 3
A.It hardly produces misshapen fruit and vegetables.
B.It has more successful food chains than theU.S.
C.It is facing the serious problem of unfavorable weather.
D.It solves the problem of ugly produce earlier than America.
15.How does wasted produce harm the environment according to paragraph 4
A.It pollutes the farms.
B.It gives off a bad smell.
C.It contributes to global warming.
D.It produces lots of carbon dioxide.

HowtoAvoidanInternetAddiction

You might fear you're the only one who has experienced that feeling. 16. Luckily, there are some ways to avoid living your life in front of the computer.
 17.
More and more people in the world are becoming addicted to the Internet, and you are not the only one with this problem. So do not be embarrassed. Just be brave to admit that you are on your way to an Internet addiction. And then find others with the same problem and help each other beat it.
Set aside limited time for computer use.
Make sure not to turn it on too many times a week. If you have a laptop, make sure to put it somewhere that you can remember but not somewhere that you see every day. Try keeping the lid closed when you are not using it. 18. If you have a desktop PC, try not to go near it or put something over it like a sheet.
Call people instead of sending instant messages or texts.
If you are free on weekends, call friends and ask them to go outside to do something you enjoy, like playing a sport. This will take your mind off the computer. 19.
Use an alarm clock or timer (计时器).
Before using your computer, decide on a time limit such as 30 minutes. Set the clock or timer and make sure that you get away from the computer when the time is up. Alternatively create a shutdown timer on your desktop. 20.

The United Nations supported the idea a decade ago, but, in the West at least, insects remain mostly absent from supermarket shelves.(联合国在十年前就支持了这一想法,但至少在西方,超市货架上仍然看不到昆虫)"可知,大部分西方人还是不吃昆虫的。故选B。
Each litre produces between three and ten litres of wastewater full of abandoned substances that are richer in protein but not in carbohydrates (碳水化合物), especially compared with chicken feed.(每升废水会产生3到10升的废水,这些废水充满了富含蛋白质但不含碳水化合物的废弃物质,尤其是与鸡饲料相比)"可知,研究人员一开始不确定啤酒废弃物是否能作昆虫的饲料,是因为啤酒废料缺乏必要的碳水化合物。故选C。
When Dr Eriksen made further chemical analysis, he found few differences in the nutrients needed for farm animals' growth.(当埃里克森博士进行进一步的化学分析时,他发现农场动物生长所需的营养物质几乎没有什么不同)"以及最后一段"What the researchers found is good news for some other industries whose waste is likewise plentiful and protein-rich, and they now look to be reasonable targets for nutrient recycling by insects.(研究人员的发现对其他一些工业来说是个好消息,这些工业的废物同样丰富,富含蛋白质,现在它们看起来是昆虫养分回收的合理目标)"可推知,昆虫可以把啤酒废料变成肉。故选C。
What the researchers found is good news for some other industries whose waste is likewise plentiful and protein-rich, and they now look to be reasonable targets for nutrient recycling by insects.(研究人员的发现对其他一些工业来说是个好消息,这些工业的废物同样丰富,富含蛋白质,现在它们看起来是昆虫养分回收的合理目标)"可推知,该实验的前景不限于啤酒行业。故选D。

【答案】12.A
13.B
14.D
15.C
Farmers throw away these imperfect items, as many grocery chains won't buy them for fear that they are unsellable." 故选A。
One such business is Imperfect Produce, a start-up that provides fresh ugly produce for consumers."Imperfect Produce就是这样一家公司,这家初创公司为消费者提供新鲜的丑陋农产品。
While this movement might be a new trend here in the U.S., it's already gained serious momentum (势头) in Europe."
When the discarded fruit and vegetables decompose, they release (释放) methane (CH.), a greenhouse gas. When released into the air, it is about 86 times as powerful as carbon dioxide (CO,) over a 20-year period. Waste is, in fact, the ugliest thing of all."

Failure
is what often happens in our life. Students may fail in exams, scientist may
fail in their work, but athletes may fail in competitions.
People
have different attitudes for failure. Some people think of they are fools and
lose hearts after failing to do something. Other people view failure positive.
They draw lessons from failure and became more experienced. With hard work,
they will be success in the end.
In my opinion, failure is not bad
thing, and perhaps is a kind of treasure. Only those who learn something from
failure and keep on try can reach success.
