五、 (2023·宿迁市泗洪县期中)阅读理解。
I ordered some snacks on my phone one afternoon. When I got home
from work that evening, I saw they were already at my door. So fast!
Have you ever thought about how people in the past communicated and did
things without mobile phones?

Take the post for example. Before phones, if you wanted to stay in
touch with someone far away, you needed to send him or her a letter in the
mail. When my mum was in primary school, she used to do this with her
pen friend. A pen friend is a name for a person who you keep in touch with
mainly through postal mail. My mum would write to her pen friend every few
months, and then, after a little while, her pen friend would write back.
Later, once email became a common thing, sending letters in the post
didn’t attract people anymore. It became known as “snail mail”!

What if you were at an airport in the time before mobile phones? My
dad said that in the 1970s there used to be message boards(告示牌) at
some airports. If you needed to exit the airport and wanted to leave a message
for a friend who would be arriving later, you could write him or her a
message and stick it on the message board. Then, your friend could go to
check the board later and see what you wrote to him or her!

( B )1. How did the writer’s mum keep in touch with her pen friend in
primary school?
A. By talking on mobile phones. B. By mailing letters.
C. By visiting every few months. D. By writing diaries.
( A )2. Which of the following can be used to replace the underlined
word “exit”?
A. Leave. B. Escape. C. Reach. D. Enter.
B
A

( B )3. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To make us use message boards at an airport.
B. To introduce another way of communication.
C. To make some friends like fathers at the airport.
D. To weaken the importance of mobile phones.
B

E. you may be able to keep going and finish the task
F. That’s why so many people avoid their work until the last minute
G. The task seems too difficult

Some of the students have a problem called procrastination(拖延症).
When procrastination becomes a habit, it can make our lives terrible.
However, everyone can avoid it by taking a few simple steps today!
Make daily “to-do” lists. Before your day ends, make a plan for
tomorrow. List upcoming tasks in order of importance. You’ll begin each new
day with a head start, already knowing what needs to be done. As you
complete each task, check it off. 1. . Always keep your daily
schedule with you. Use it to remind yourself what you need to do next. You’ll
then have a much better chance of carrying out your plans.
C

Break large tasks up into small ones. If a project looks too big,
2. . The task at hand may seem too hard. You may feel defeated(挫
败) before beginning. But every project is doable if it’s done in small steps.
Begin by breaking up your task into smaller parts. This helps remove the
unnecessary fear of having to do a large project all at one time.
3. . If your workplace is full of distractions(使人分心的事),

Follow the five-minute rule. The hardest part about any task is getting
started. 4. . Doing so usually leads to added stress. One solution to this
problem is to schedule a time daily to work on your big project. Work on it
for only five minutes. Then decide whether or not to continue. Surprisingly,

四、 书面表达。
某英语报开展以“How to deal with the exam stress”为题的征文比

How to deal with the exam stress
Everyone may have the exam stress. A little bit of stress can be a good
thing to us.

If we have proper stress, we can think actively and work
hard. Besides, it can remind us to go over our lessons in time to
remember them. So we can pass the exams easily.
However, if we have too much stress, we can’t sleep well at
night and we may feel too tired or sleepy in class. We may be afraid of
exams too much and fail in the end.

In my opinion, to deal with stress, we’d better plan and
prepare well. We should also form some good habits, such as doing
enough exercise and having healthy diets. Then we’ll feel relaxed and do
well in the exams.

too. Then they began to talk. They 11 took out photos of their families

He would never have a chance to see his 12 grow up. When hearing

It is normal to feel a bit nervous about exams, especially if you’re
under pressure from school or family. Exam stress can cause you to feel
nervous or depressed(沮丧的), and this might influence your sleeping or
eating habits.
If you have any of these feelings or are worried that exam stress is taking
over your life, you are not alone. Here are some things you can do.

Firstly, let your trusted friends and family know if you’re having a
hard time, so they can be there to support you, encourage you and offer
you a listening ear. You don’t have to go through this alone. Keeping
everything to yourself will only make things worse, so don’t be afraid to
open up.
Secondly, think about all the practical support you need, and be
honest with yourself about it. You are allowed to ask for help. Tell your
teachers about your worries. They may have talked to lots of students who are
going through similar things, so they can give you some helpful advice.

One more thing you can do is to be kind to yourself. Think about all the
things you have achieved so far. It can be helpful to write a list of all the
things you like about yourself, and the things other people value about you
too.
If you follow the things above, I’m sure you will never be worried
about exams.
