五、 阅读理解。
We sometimes see rust(锈) on things that are made of iron(铁). But
now NASA scientists have found rust on the Moon.
Is this an important finding? It is, in fact. When water and oxygen
(氧气) meet iron, rust will form on the iron. The Moon has rocks(岩
石) that are rich in iron. However, the Moon is dry, though it does have
some frozen(冰冻的) water. There is no oxygen on the Moon. So why is
there rust? It could be because of the Earth.

Scientists have only found rust on the side of the Moon that faces the
Earth. They think that oxygen from the Earth might travel to the Moon with
the help of solar wind. It arrives on the Moon and mixes with frozen water.
Rust can then form. However, scientists aren’t sure. They must do more
scientific studies to see if it is true.
Mars is rusty too. The rust makes it look red. That’s why it’s called the
Red Planet. Mars is rich in iron. But scientists are not sure how it got rusty. It
might be because of the rainstorms that happened on the planet in the past.

二、 阅读理解。(本题共5小题;每小题3分,共15分)
If people keep the food for a longer time, it will be easier to attract
insects. To work out this problem, scientists have been working on different
smells to find one strong enough to stop insects from going near food. One
possibility would be to use plants with strong smells, like garlic(蒜) or
pine(松木), to keep insects away. Unluckily, using these smells may
keep some people away too.

A more hopeful repellent is citronella oil(香茅油). It comes from a
kind of lemongrass. Scientists did an experiment(实验) using this oil with
an insect—the red flour beetle(赤拟谷盗). Scientists sprayed(喷洒)
boxes with citronella oil and noticed that the beetles did not enter those
boxes. They were much more interested in boxes that were not sprayed.
One problem with using citronella oil as a repellent is that it does not last
(持续) very long. After a few months, it loses its smell, and insects
don’t find it unpleasant(讨厌的,使人不愉快的) any more. Scientists
hope to improve citronella oil so that its smell keeps strong for a longer time.
It will also be important to make sure that the oil is not bad for people,
because scientists are still not sure if it is safe to use around food.

分,共10分)
Giant pandas are China’s treasure and are loved by people worldwide. In
February, pandas including Xiang Xiang and Yong Ming came back home.
Before this, they were on loan to Japan.
Since the early 1980s, China has stopped sending pandas as gifts
because of their falling numbers. In the 1990s, China started 10-year loans
of pandas to other countries. Today about 60 pandas are living in other
countries.

This may lead you to question: How do overseas(海外的) zoos
make sure they can give the pandas a comfortable life?
Wei Rongping, the head of the Wolong Shenshuping panda base in
Sichuan, told that overseas zoos needed to meet a few conditions(条件).
For example, there must be a healthy and safe environment for pandas to
live in. Take Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen, the Netherlands, for example. In
2017, to welcome pandas Xing Ya and Wu Wen, the zoo built a Chinese-
style panda house called Pandasia. It gives the panda couple a clinic, a cold
bamboo storage room and a nursery for when they are ready to have babies.

Also, a giant panda may eat 12 to 38 kilograms of bamboo in a day.
The zoo must give pandas enough food. Pandas Si Hai and Jing Jing travelled
to Qatar in 2022. Every week, the park buys 1,000 kg of fresh bamboo
from their hometown, Sichuan. Breeders(饲养员) there even learn the
Sichuan dialect(方言) to talk to the pandas.
