Every year, wildfire(野火) destroys much forest land. Homes break
down, and thousands of people die. Smoke jumpers are helping to stop this.
Smoke jumpers are a special kind of firefighters. They jump from planes
into the areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot. They race to put out

At a fire site, smoke jumpers first examine the land and decide how to
put out the fire. Their main goal is to stop the fire from spreading, using

Although most smoke jumpers are men, more women are joining. The
most important things are your weight and height. Take smoke jumpers in the
USA, for example—they must be 54 to 91 kilograms, so they don’t get
hurt when they land, or get blown over by the strong winds.
Smoke jumpers must be able to live in the wilderness. In Russia, many
smoke jumpers know how to find food in the forest and even use trees to
make simple furniture.
Their work is dangerous. But for these firefighters, the smoke jumper
isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires and
live in the forest. A 28-year-old Russian smoke jumper says, “This is the
best job for the strong and brave.”

On a hot summer afternoon, Mike heard Jim and Jack were going for a
swim in the river. After school, Mike chatted with them at a shop, and
knew that they didn’t know how to swim but that they wanted to have a try.
Then he followed them down to the river and asked them not to go in. But
they didn’t listen to him and jumped into the river. Soon the water took them
away.





Without thinking twice, Mike jumped into a nearby boat and then
