One day a man found a cocoon(茧) of a butterfly in the forest. He sat
there for several hours and watched the cocoon. Suddenly he saw a small hole
on it and the butterfly tried its best to force its body through that hole. But it
was hard for the butterfly to come out of the cocoon. So the man decided to
help the butterfly. He cut off the remaining(剩余的) cocoon easily. But to
his surprise, the butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it
came out.

The man still watched the butterfly because he expected that the body
would become smaller and the wings would grow larger, and that the
butterfly would be able to fly. But nothing happened! In fact, the butterfly
spent the rest of its life crawling(爬行) around with a heavy body and
small wings. It was never able to fly.

The man was kind, but he did not understand the laws of nature.
Before the butterfly came out of the cocoon, fluid(液体) from its body
must be forced into its wings, and then it would be ready for flying. It must
have a hard struggle to get through the small opening so as to get its freedom
from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are what we need in our lives. If we go through our
lives without any difficulties, we would fail easily. We would not be as
strong as we could have been and we could never fly.

My chemistry teacher Mrs. Louise usually gave us the instruction paper
the night before the lab class and let us read it. During the class, she first
went over the steps and then put us into groups of two to do the experiments.
What was special was that for every science lab class, Mrs. Louise changed
everyone’s lab partner to make them work with different classmates.

That’s so beautiful!” they screamed. Then they excitedly took pictures,
posted them online and sent them to their friends. Mrs. Louise didn’t get
angry with us at all for our “noises”. She herself even took photos with us.

brothers and I also follow each other on social media. I can see what their
college 5 and what they’re doing in their free time. Similarly, they can
see what I’m doing at home or the places and events I go to, such as
football matches and birthday parties. I find I learn much more about my

In the near future, the doctors who treat our illness might be tiny
machines that swim through our bodies. Some movies have played with the
idea of making machines the size of a cell(细胞). Today robot technology
has brought the idea closer to the real life. In my laboratory, I’m just trying
to build such intelligent, or smart, tiny robots.
一
二
Tiny living things, such as bacteria(细菌), have many intelligent
actions. If we can make robots copy some of them, it’s very exciting. The
way bacteria travel across their environment is unbelievable. At first, they
move around without purpose, but when they start sensing food, like an
amino acid (氨基酸), they will move gradually in that direction. As an
expert making robots, I think it is great to make tiny robots that can do the
same thing.
一
二
For example, look at something like E. coli(大肠杆菌). It can sense
amino acids around it. It can change how it’s moving. It can rebuild or repair
itself. In fact, E. coli does all these so well that some researchers are using it
as part of their tiny machines. They are making their tiny robots get free rides
from E. coli. And E. coli does all the sensing for tiny robots and directs their
movements.
一
二
We’re already using smaller and smaller medical tools, like catheters
(导管) that can travel deep into your brain to treat a blood clot(血块).
Next, we will put tiny robots that can travel into even smaller spaces and
treat illness at the early time into the body. Imagine a tiny robot that can treat
a blood clot deep in your brain that can’t be reached with the catheters we are
using today.
一
二
We may not actually need something as powerful as artificial
intelligence(AI) in these cases. We can still build a very useful tiny robot
with a low degree of intelligence. For example, if a tiny robot notices a
blood clot, it can slowly move in that direction, and carry medicine
directly to that part. It might only have the intelligence of bacteria but could
still work.
一
二
( C )1. What can we learn about the writer?
A. The writer is a middle school teacher.
B. The writer is a dentist from a hospital.
C. The writer is an expert making robots.
D. The writer is an expert making medicine.

( B )2. What are some researchers doing according to Paragraph 3?
A. Using tiny robots to sense E. coli.
B. Letting E. coli work for their tiny robots.
C. Changing tiny robots into E. coli’s drivers.
D. Telling tiny robots to direct E. coli’s movements.
B
一
二
( A )3. What does the writer think of the tiny robots?
A. They will be widely used by doctors in the future.
B. They are not able to get to tinier areas in the body.
C. They will be smarter than tiny robots in the future.
D. They can help doctors take care of patients on time.

DNA is the whole “map” of the human body. It is something that all

People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time.
At first, Mr. Mendel discovered why we look similar to other people in our
family. It is because of small things called “genes” in our body. In 1953,
two scientists, Watson and Crick, found out that those small parts are real
messages. They are written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961, scientists found the first “word” that they could understand
in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell(细胞) to build its parts.
So far, scientists have found all the “words” in the DNA map, but we
do not understand what they all do.

Last week, our school held a science festival, which was aimed
at developing students’ interest in science and technology.
At the festival, some students took an active part in the model-
making competition. Many of their robots, which were the highlight of
the festival, drew people’s attention. These robots were in the shape of
lovely animals, such as rabbits, monkeys and dogs. They could do
some simple tasks like sweeping the floor and throwing away rubbish.
Our school hopes that more and more students can learn science
and technology better so as to serve our country.
