Many of us have seen rainbows in the sky once the sun starts shining
again after it rains. For us to see a rainbow, the conditions need to be just
right. We need some water drops in the air, like rain or even fog, and we
need the sun to be behind us and quite low to the ground. This is because a
rainbow is created by light passing through water drops.
一
二
三
四
The light that comes from the sun seems white to us. But the white light
we see is made up of a mix of different colours. When the light goes through
a raindrop, these colours can separate out. Each of the colours in the
rainbow has a different wavelength(波长). Raindrops look like little balls.
When light hits one of these little balls of water, the light can change
direction. We call this “refraction(折射)”. Each of the different
wavelengths is refracted differently. If the light hits the raindrop at the right
place, the refraction separates the wavelengths out into their different
colours.
一

We are taught there are seven colours: red, orange, yellow,
green, blue, indigo and violet. But this isn’t exactly true. Blue and green
are next to each other in the rainbow, which is why we can see turquoise
(a mix of blue and green). Brown is a mix of red and green. But they
aren’t next to each other in the rainbow, so we don’t see them mix to make
brown.
一
二
三
四
We would never see black and white in a rainbow. Black is what we see
when there’s no light at all. On the other hand, white is a mix of all the
colours together. When light is refracted by raindrops, it separates the white
light out, meaning it is no longer white.

Different colours can affect us in many different ways, according to
Verity Allen. In a new programme Colour Me Healthy, Verity studies the
ways how colours influence our life and the choices we make.
“Have you ever noticed that people often use the same colour for the
same thing?” says Verity. “Our toothpaste(牙膏) is usually white or
blue. It’s seldom green. Why? For some reason we think that blue and white
are clean while green products are a little unpleasant.”

During the programme, Verity studies eight different colours. She
meets different people who work in the colour industry. Some of them design
food packages(包装), and some design the colours of lipsticks(口红).
Some of the people she meets clearly have very little scientific(科学的)
knowledge to support their ideas, such as the American “Colour Doctor”.
He believes that serious diseases can be treated successfully by using
coloured lights. Verity also interviews real scientists who are studying the
effects of green and red lights on mice and gets some surprising results.
Overall, it’s an interesting programme, and anyone who watches it
will probably find some-thing new. However, it’s up to you to make your
own decision about how much you should believe.

a good idea to paint the wall light blue. Blue can bring peace to your

How much do you know about colours? Isaac Newton found that when
a pure white light passes 1 a prism(棱镜), it is divided into all the

Further studies showed that light of 4 different colours could be

Green is the colour of nature and the symbol of life. For thousands of
years, humans have followed the laws of nature to live in harmony(和
谐) with nature.
That has been seen in ancient Chinese houses. Ancient Chinese often
built their homes at the foot of the mountain with a river running nearby. The
mountains could stop the cold wind from the north and the river provided
water for life. Most houses were also built facing south or east so that the
rooms were able to get enough sunshine in winter and keep cool in summer.
一
二
三
四
In modern times, humans didn’t follow the laws of nature during fast
development. Luckily, it’s never too late to make changes.
Green development is the goal of all countries. In 2016, China signed
The Paris Agreement on climate change, giving a strong push to the
international efforts against global(全球的) warming.
一

三
四
Also in China, the government added green development to the
country’s work plans. From 1999 to the end of 2018, by carrying out
Mother River Protection Operation, China raised about 600 million yuan to
build over 5,700 green projects. Through international cooperation(合
作), over 98.32 million trees were planted across China.
Denmark is a leading country in wind and solar technologies. Denmark
has started the “Power-to-X” plan, providing about 1.25 billion kroner
for projects producing hydrogen(氢气).
一

Builders across the world are also playing a role in green development.
In Chicago, pressed newspaper, recycled glass and plastic are used on
buildings. In Bali, the green school is made of bamboo. The school gets its
electricity(电) from solar panels(太阳能电池板), waterpower and a
generator that burns farm waste.
Following the laws of nature is the only way out. A small move in one
country may influence the global community as a whole. Let’s join hands to
make the world a better place for now and the future.

A new study has shown how the colour of a bowl can influence the taste
of the food it holds.
Although it is hard to say what a picky(挑剔的) eater is like, the
type may include people who have a limited diet, who have strong likes or
dislikes for certain food, who require food to be prepared in a special
way, who aren’t willing to accept new food, or who show signs of all
these features.

According to this new study, food was put into groups in red, blue,
or white bowls. While the colours made no difference in taste for non-picky
eaters, the picky eaters reported changes in their sense of taste based on the
colour of the bowl being used. Snacks in red and blue bowls were thought to
have more salt than those in white bowls, while snacks in red bowls were
less pleasant than those in the other bowls.

“This knowledge can be useful for those who want to try more kinds of
foods,” says Lorenzo Stafford, a psychologist from the University of
Portsmouth in the UK. “For example, if you want to encourage a picky
eater to try some bitter(苦的) vegetables, you can try to put them on a
pink plate or in a yellow bowl, because this can give him or her a sweet
feeling.”
At first it may seem strange that the colour of a bowl can influence the
taste of food, but the study before has shown how light and music can
influence eating habits. All of our senses are connected, including taste.

“This new study can help in treating food neophobia—the
unwillingness to try new food,” the team of the study says, and further
studies will be required to find out more relationships between colours and
foods.
“Through further studies, maybe we can decide ways to help actively
influence people’s diet, and their health in mind and body,” says
Stafford.
