When I was little, I was really little. But my dream was big. I dreamed
of being a basketball player. I tried out for the teams at school, but I was
never given a chance.
As I got older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot bigger. On my
12th birthday, I decided to try a new sport—running. I told Grandpa,
“I’m going to be an athlete.”
“Dave,” Grandpa began gently, “if you can’t be big, you can
do something big.”

I ran 12 miles on my 12th birthday. On my 13th birthday, I did it

on my 15th, 16 on my 16th, and you guessed it—17 miles on my 17th
birthday.
All this running inspired(激发) another big dream. Someday, I’d
run the Boston Marathon(波士顿马拉松). I told Grandpa about my
decision.

“But, Dave, you haven’t trained for the marathon. Are you sure
you’re ready?” Grandpa asked. But he still promised to walk over and
cheer me on.
I ran fast that day. But I fell at Mile 18 and was driven to the hospital.
Later that night, I called Grandpa and told him I failed.
“No,” he said calmly. “You didn’t fail. You discovered
something.”
“I did?” I asked.

“Yes. You discovered that big dreams don’t just come true. If you train
and work hard, I promise to wait for you next year and cheer you on.”
I trained every day, running miles and miles. Sadly, just two months
later, Grandpa died. He wouldn’t be waiting for my second Boston
Marathon. I decided I’d run for him.
That day, I ran fast. “Keep going! You can do it!” His words
filled my head as I forced my legs to make each painful step. As I crossed the
finishing line, I threw my arms in the air and cried, “Grandpa, we did
it!”

Some people succeed, while others may not. This is because some
people have certain qualities, which others do not have.
The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, you
must be optimistic(乐观的). If you do not expect to win, you will not try
as hard as those who do expect to win.
一

You also need to have a clear aim and a reason for doing something
because motivation(动力) is a key to achieving success. If you do not
have an aim, then you will not be motivated to work hard and put your
performance under the microscope to make sure that every detail is right.
Another quality that helps people succeed is creativity(创造力)—
thinking about things in a different way and wondering how others would do
the same thing. Think about some successful people you know. They might
be successful with a little creativity, but the most successful people are the
most creative ones.
一

三
四
Reading is another quality to success, as it will help you learn about
how other people have achieved success. If you want to learn how to set up a
successful business, you should read books about people who have
achieved amazing success in their areas of business.
一
二
三
四
Practising is also important if you want to succeed because practice
makes perfect. Practise every day at whatever career you are in, and by
doing so, you will see yourself, your business and your self-confidence
begin to grow. If you feel confident about what you do, this confidence will
make other people believe in you as well. Your colleagues(同事) will be
happy to work with you, and your boss will give you more responsibility
(职责). So you see, confidence is also important to help you be a
successful person.

Nobody wants to lose, but we must accept that losing is a part of life.
After all, we can’t win all the time. However, we can learn something
valuable from every failure. This may help us succeed in the future. So we
must know how to be a good loser.
一

We must not be afraid of losing. When we lose, just take it with a
smile and look on the bright side of it. Failure can’t be avoided in our life.
Edison failed many times before he invented the light bulb(灯泡). When
he was asked how he felt, he said that he hadn’t failed many times but had
learned which things couldn’t work. We must know that history is full of
examples of men and women who achieved success although they failed
many times.

Losing is not very disgraceful. We must accept our failure and learn to
take advantage of it. Remember that it can be helpful. Take action to walk out
of it. When we lose, think about what we did and how we can improve. If
someone else can help, we’ll be lucky enough. Maybe he or she has been
through the same experience before. Many people enjoy helping others solve
problems. This can save us a lot of time in learning how to avoid the same
mistakes in the future.

We should face our failure when we lose. There is only one winner in
every competition. That is a usual way of life. If we offer our congratulations
to the winner and share in his or her happiness, we won’t feel sorry for our
failure.
In a word, being a good loser will help us to succeed in life. It might
be painful in the beginning, but there are many advantages. Good losers set
examples to us, and most importantly, they finally win.

I was 11 years old when I asked my mum for piano lessons in 2010. We
were in the economic crisis(经济危机). She said a polite “no”.
That didn’t stop me. I googled the measurements(尺寸) of a
keyboard, drew the keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I
would click notes on an online keyboard and play them back on my paper
one—keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six
months playing without touching a real piano. Once my mum saw that I was
serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons.

I still remember the first lesson. I was struck by how real the sound of
the piano was. I passed grade one after eight lessons. Once I started
secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again. But I passed grade
three, and then grade five, practising only on my piece of paper.
One evening, when I was about 13, my mum said she had a surprise
for me. It was an electronic keyboard, bought with more borrowed money.
It was the first time I had played for her. She was in shock.

My school didn’t offer music A-level. I found the Purcell School for
young musicians. But I had to pass a difficult test. Some of the questions
involved an evaluation of the composer or when some pieces were written. I
felt stressed. To my amazement, I was offered a place.

At Purcell, I spent two years working as hard as I could. I performed to
raise money and saved enough to buy my first piano. When I left Purcell, I
was awarded the senior piano prize and senior academic music prize. I am
now at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. I feel proud. It’s
been 10 years since I drew my paper piano, and I’m at one of the world’s
leading music schools.
Surprisingly, I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the
piano—what we call mental practice. The paper piano helped arouse my
curiosity about how music works.
