Suddenly the doorbell rang. My younger brother rushed to open the door,
thinking that our parents came home.

Outside stood a tall man wearing a black raincoat. He said that he was a
salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home. Without
thinking, my brother said, “No.” He asked if we would like to buy
some books which he was selling. I quickly explained that we were not
supposed to buy anything without our parents’ permission(允许).
Then, as I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our
house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother’s hands with a
rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I did it in a

Amy opened the box at home. She was expecting a pair of sports shoes, but she just found an old teapot. “This is not a very interesting gift,” said Amy, a bit disappointed. “That’s all right. opened his box and found a pair of sports shoes inside. “Where is the
teapot?” the two thieves shouted at the top of their voices with red faces.

e with us! We’re going to search your home,” one of them
said.
When the thieves entered Mr Chen’s flat, it was dark and quiet. All of
a sudden, the door closed and the lights went on. The police were waiting
inside.

I was pleased at running away from Long John Silver though I knew he

As I was trying to find a safer place to hide myself, I heard some men
talking close by. It was Silver and Tom.
“I want you with me!” Silver shouted. “When we have the
treasure, there’s gold for you too.” “No,” cried Tom. “I told you. I’m

words of Tom. It was a gunshot from Silver’s gun.

I moved away quickly and quietly. I ran fast, not thinking about the
direction I was taking. Suddenly, I saw a figure move quickly from tree to
tree. Was it a bear or a man or a monkey? Silver himself appeared less

added. “Now, he is also on the island to find Flint’s treasure. He wants to
kill us and take over the ship!”

“Good boy,” he said. “I was on Flint’s ship when he buried the
treasure, along with six strong seamen. But when he returned, he was
alone, and the six all died. How did he make it? No one could know but
himself. It was a battle, a murder, and a sudden death—him against six.”

四、 阅读理解。
I’ve been writing detective stories since I was a teenager. Some people
think it’s a strange job for a woman, but I think crime fiction is for
everyone. I’ve started giving writing classes and the most common question
people ask is “Where do you start?”. It’s impossible to give fixed rules,
but there are some general tips that people often find useful.

·Before you start writing, choose a time period and place that sound
realistic(现实的). A useful tip is to write about what you know. If you
were born in Paris or London, it might make sense to set your story in a
European country. Of course, you can write about any century, but you’ll
have to do a lot more research to make your story believable.

·The character of your detective is very important. He or she must have
qualities that help to solve the crime, but he or she also needs characteristics
that make him or her an individual(个人). He or she must also fit the time
and place of your story. Readers are very knowledgeable, and they will
notice if you get any details wrong about the time period.

·Every detective story needs a crime, of course. You need to explain
what happens before the crime, the crime itself and what happens next.
Remember that you don’t always have to write about a murder. Some readers
don’t enjoy stories filled with guns and blood. So, why not write about
theft, kidnapping, or something different like an environmental crime?

·Clues are important. They keep the readers’ interest. They must be
interesting, but not too difficult or repetitive(重复的). The readers also
need to know who the suspects are and whether they can prove that they were
somewhere else when a crime was committed. Readers love a “twist” at
the end of the story—a surprise or a new fact that brings the action to its
conclusion.
