Alice Howland leads a busy life. She's a famous professor of psychology at Harvard University and also in great demand as a speaker at seminars and conferences.
As the story begins, Alice has traveled to Stanford University to give a talk. She begins sharing information that she has shared a thousand times before; she needs no notes. Then suddenly, a word escapes from her. The pause seems to last forever while she struggles to find the word. Finally, she clumsily uses the word “stuff” and continues, thinking the slip is due to the jet lag as she finishes her talk.
Back home, Alice decides to go for a run. She follows a familiar route, but out of the blue(出乎意外) it isn't familiar. She knows she is in Harvard Square but has no idea which way is home. She begins to panic. Then as suddenly as her sense of direction left her, it's back again. She rapidly walks the distance to her house.
Alice continues to experience other small mistakes now and then. But it isn't until they become more and more frequent that she has a series of tests confirming that she has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔兹海默症).
As Alice's condition worsens, she loses the ability to enjoy books and movies because she can no longer follow the plots. She doesn't know how to spend her days. The once famous expert in linguistics(语言学), who was used to a busy schedule, suddenly has nothing really to do. She depends on her husband, John, and their three grown children, but she loses touch with everyone else.
Although life was disappearing for Alice, it was moving on for her family. Anna, one of her daughters, has twins. Alice's husband, a successful scientist in his own field, decides to accept a position in New York City and move there leaving Alice with their children. Not long before he leaves, John takes Alice to their beach house for one last vacation. While there, Alice has a clear moment and tells John that she remembers him and that she was smart once. John assures her that she is the smartest person he has ever known, and Alice replies that she misses herself. With John gone, a nurse comes to take care of Alice, who no longer recognizes her own children. Her daughters help care for her every day.

A recent study in the journal Current Biology found that people danced 12% more when very low frequency bass (低音) was played. Scientists wanted to see what factors of music make us want to dance. “We look at things like what kinds of rhythms make us really drawn in and want to move more,” said Daniel Cameron, a neuroscientist and the lead author of the study.
Volunteers were led into a lab that was changed into an electronic dance music concert, with live music performed for them, who were equipped with headband s that had a motion capture sensor. The lab had special speakers that could play a very low frequency bass, undetectable to the human ear. The set lasted about an hour. Researchers introduced the very low bass every 2.5 minutes and found that the concertgoers moved more when the speakers were on—even though they couldn’t hear it.
Cameron thinks that our vestibular(前庭的) system can help explain the reason. “It’s the inner-ear structures that give us a sense of where our head is in space,” he says. “That system is sensitive to low-frequency stimulation, especially if it’s loud.”
Some people hear music and can’t help but move, whether there are low, silent bass frequencies or not. So why do humans dance “It’s hard to test this, but there has been some work on why we may have evolved this way. We know that moving together in synchrony(同步) when we’re making music together and dancing together leads to social bonding. We feel better about the people we’re with. We feel more connected with them,” Cameron says. “So you can imagine this has potential advantages for groups throughout the long history of our species.”
Evolution aside, Cameron finds value in knowing his study has uncovered just one of the ingredients for what makes us want to dance a little bit more.
28.What does Cameron’s research focus on
A.The popularity of dancing among people. B.The evolutionary reasons why humans dance.
C.The musical elements that encourage dancing. D.The little effect of low frequency bass on dancers.
29.What can we learn about the research setup described in paragraph 2
A.Low frequency bass was played regularly. B.Participants tracked their own movements.
C.The dance music was performed in a live concert. D.The human speakers performed for an entire hour.
30.Why might humans have evolved to dance according to Cameron
A.To inspire imagination. B.To promote communication.
C.To create work opportunities. D.To stimulate the body’s potential.
31.What can be the best title for the text
A.The Science of Dance B.The Benefit Behind Dancing
C.The Role of Rhythms in Music D.The Evolution of the Musical System

In 2021, a wildfire bloomed in the Sonoran Desert in southwestern Arizona. By June 7, winds had blown the wildfire east-northeast into the Pinal Mountains, in the Tonto’s southern reaches. The fire rose quickly, climbing over cliffs(悬崖) and sweeping across vast jungles. When the fire hit the tops of mountains with pine forests, it consumed them as well.
The Telegraph Fire, as it’s now called, grew very intense, creating its own wind as its heat rose, pulling air in from the edges. On the fifth day, the fire neared the city of Globe. By then, it had already destroyed a large area of Globe, making it one of the most powerful wildfires in Arizona’s history, spanning approximately 700 square kilometers of land. But the fire would not swallow Globe. Instead, on a ridge, the Telegraph Fire encountered a protective bulwark, remains of a previous great fire.
According to ecologist Kit O’Connor, the Telegraph Fire shift ed from a powerful fire, which was killing roughly 60% to 70% of the trees it encountered, to a slow-moving ground fire that only killed about 1% of the trees it came across. “Ultimately, the fire stopped approximately a kilometer away from a residential area on the outskirts of Globe,” said Lata, a wildfire management expert. She notes that without the Pinal Fire, the Telegraph Fire would have likely spread into the town and that they would have no means to prevent it.
The decision to allow the Pinal Fire to burn was guided by a new approach to wildfire management called potential operational delineations(PODs). PODs categorize the landscape into zones where fires can potentially be contained. These zones are determined before the fire season begins, using a combination of AI and local expertise. A PODs network can assist land managers in identifying opportunities to exploit wildfires that light under manageable conditions. The goal is that, if subsequent fires break out under extreme conditions, there will be fewer bushes available to feed their great power.
32.What does paragraph 1 mainly describe about the wildfire
A.Its extension. B.Its origin. C.Its duration. D.Its management.
33.What does the underlined word “bulwark” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.A water source. B.A defensive wall.
C.A type of vegetation. D.A fire-fighting technique.
34.What is Lata’s attitude to the Pinal Fire
A.Critical. B.Indifferent. C.Cautious. D.Supportive.
35.What is the main purpose of PODs in wildfire management
A.To predict wildfire occurrences. B.To reduce fuel for future wildfires.
C.To help land managers put out wildfires. D.To create landscapes against potential wildfires.

I adore poetry-I still remember early lessons on haikus back in my Grade Three classroom. Poetry can be amazing. Here's three ways to bring poetry into your classroom.
Combine poetry and art
Poems often use a few words to create pictures, so they're perfect to combine with art. ____36____ Students can write a poem inspired by a piece of art or create a piece of art inspired by a poem, which can be especially effective when you're looking at particular styles of art-abstract art or sculpture.
____37____ They can look at how poetry can be a part of public art or how words, color and shapes can be combined to create something beautiful.
Create poetry displays
Due to their shorter size, poems make wonderful subject for displays. There are a few ways you can display poetry in the classroom. For instance, if you write or explore poems on a particular theme, you can use that to create a display. Autumn poetry can be displayed on colorful trees made out of paper. ____38____
Students can also use a display board to create their own poetry. ____39____ They can also write lines of poetry to pin up on a board to continue a poem which is being written.
Explore poetry in song
Poetry and songs are two different forms of writing. ____40____ They both use rhyme, rhythm and highly effective word choice to make you feel something. Students can also think about how already written songs could be set to music.
Take a moment to share some poetry with your students and open up a whole world of different rhythms, rhymes and pictures made out of words.

At a moment’s notice, quick thinking can save lives. Nothing illustrates this better than the story of 13-year-old hero named Dillon Reeves, who jumped into action when his school bus driver experienced a medical emergency, bringing the bus to a stop and avoiding what could have been a very tragic accident. Reeves’ parents expressed their pride at his actions.
“It’s an honor, said his dad Steve. ”I am a bus driver, too. Because of that, Reeves could probably know how to hold the steering wheel (方向盘) and step on the brakes. "
That day, Reeves came back home from school and was riding a school bus full of students in Michigan. And he sat in the fifth rows as usual.
The school bus driver has ten years of driving experience, and during these years, he has never had a driving accident. He held the steering wheel confidently, and he stepped on the brakes carefully. All the students were chatting as usual. Everything went smoothly.
A few minutes later, Reeves noticed something was off, but others didn’t feel anything wrong at the beginning.
The bus driver felt lightheaded and said on the intercom (对讲机), “I am going to pullover for a moment. Hearing that, students thought the bus would stopped in a certain parking area.
However, the bus didn’t make it to the pull-off area, and began to drift onto on coming traffic. Security camera footage showed the driver already lost consciousness. Seeing that, all the students shouted loudly and shook all over, feeling like sitting on pins and needles, but Reeves kept his head at that time and told himself he should take some actions quickly.
Noticing the danger of the situation, he knew it was time for him to do something.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
