My head was so full of digital noise that it felt like my brain was about to blow a fuse (导火线).I had no greater power of concentration than the lifeless stare of a goldfish. As a writer, I was ashamed to admit that my love of books had been compromised by a brain that simply could not sit still.
So, this year I committed myself to restoring books to the place that they held in my life before the Internet broke my brain.
My goal was 52 books: It seemed like an impossible task. A 400-page book will take the average person around eight hours to read. Finding the time to read was a challenge but here's how I did it. Firstly, I decided to treat my mind like a misbehaving child who needs some rules laid down. Then I decided that I would read for an hour or two at a time without distraction each day. It was something I hadn't done in years and it was scary how difficult it was.
In his book,The Distracted Mind, Larry Rosen says that the more we practice spending time away from our electronic devices, the calmer and more focused we become. And this is what l found. Again and again, I would gently bring myself back to the page, resisting the urge to reach for that screen. I took inspiration from Niki Gemmell, who describes in On Quiet, how investing in a safe to lock away her family's devices for long periods had opened up a space for deep reflection. For me, finding that quiet time meant finding time in my day just to read. It was like a date between me and my book. And it meant actively choosing to read at times when I normally would reach for my phone. I read on the tram, at the park, in bed at night and on lunch breaks.
By reawakening my love with books I created a sacred space where I could press pause and found inspiration knowledge, reflection and escape. In our modern world, reading is a powerful and beneficial way for us to slow down and be ourselves.

D. The author was reminded to kill time with electronic devices.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Going back to the books
B. Falling in love with reading
C. Escaping from the noisy world
D. Resisting the urge to reach for the screen

Possible discovery of the first planet outside our galaxy
Signs of a planet transiting (经过) a star outside of the Milky Way galaxy may have been detected for the first time. This intriguing result, using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, opens up a new window to search for exoplanets at greater distances than ever before. The possible exoplanet candidate is located in the spiral galaxy Messier 51 (M51), also called the Whirlpool galaxy because of its distinctive profile.
“We are trying to open up a whole new arena for finding other worlds by searching for planet candidates at X-ray wavelengths, a strategy that makes it possible to discover them in other galaxies,” said Rosanne Di Stefano of the Center for Astrophysics I Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA), who led the study, which was published Monday in Nature Astronomy.
Because the region producing bright X-rays is small, a planet passing in front of it could block most or all of the X-rays, making the transit easier to spot because the X-rays can completely disappear. This could allow exoplanets to be detected at much greater distances than current optical light transit studies, which must be able to detect tiny decreases in light because the planet only blocks a tiny part of the star.
The team used this method to detect the exoplanet candidate in a binary system (双星系统) called M51-ULS-1, located in M51. This binary system contains a black hole or neutron star or biting a companion star with a mass about 20 times that of the sun. The X-ray transit they found using Chandra data lasted about three hours, during which the X-ray emission decreased to zero. Based on this and other information, the researchers estimate the exoplanet candidate in M51-ULS-1 would be roughly the size of Saturn, and orbit the neutron star or black hole at about twice Saturn's distance from the sun.
While this is a tantalizing (引起好奇心的) study, more data would be needed to confirm the understanding as an extragalactic (银河系外的) exoplanet. One challenge is that the planet candidate's large orbit means it would not cross in front of its binary partner again for about 70 years, thwarting(阻碍) any attempts for a confirming observation for decades.
28.What is the significance of the new finding for future study
It has distinctive result.
It opens up exploration at longer distance.
It uses NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory.
D. It detects a star outside of the Milky Way for the first time.
29. According to Rosanne Di, how did they try to find exoplanets
By using X-ray wavelengths to look for exoplanets.
By discovering exoplanets in other galaxies.
By opening up a whole new arena.
By finding other worlds.
30.What does this refer to in paragraph 4
A. Chandra data
B. X-ray emission
C. The decrease of X-ray
D. The X-ray transit that lasted three hours
31. What's the team's future focus
A. Thwart attempts
B. Tantalize the study
C. Confirm observation
D. Find more information
D
Figuring out biodiversity patterns and detecting rare or just-good-at-hiding species has long posed challenges for ecosystem monitoring and conservation efforts. Traditional survey methods are labor intensive and cover limited areas. Now, emerging environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques open new possibilities.
Scientists collect water or soil samples from an environment and extract any DNA traces left behind by organisms. This is the environmental DNA (eDNA). They then use one of the two analysis methods-quantitative PCR (qPCR)or DNA sequencing. Similar to COVID tests, qPCR is used to detect if a specific species’ DNA is in the sample. For example, researchers tested river water eDNA to see if endangered fish X was present. When it was detected, they confirmed that the fish lived in that river without directly seeing it. DNA sequencing analyzes all DNA in the sample at once. Scientists can then match the DNA barcodes to databases to identify which species were in the sampled environment.
Although eDNA sampling cannot identify new species or those only known from photos and videos if they are not already listed in the reference databases, the real power of it lies in its ability to capture a wide range of organisms. With just one sample, scientists can detect all kinds of living things, from bacteria to whales, in almost any environment where life exists, including the deep sea and underground caves. One of the most significant advantages of eDNA sampling is that it allows scientists to detect species that are difficult to see or capture. This is particularly useful when studying rare or very small species, or when working in environments like dark water where visibility is limited.
This is just the start. Imagine a future where eDNA data could be collected from the most remote oceans by autonomous vehicles, analyzed by the drone (无人机) or on board a research vessel, and integrated with other monitoring data so marine managers and the public can see near-real-time data about the condition of the ocean. Science fiction Not any more.
What can we infer from paragraph 1
Finding out species diversity is difficult for related scientists.
The previous research methods are completely depend on labor.
eDNA techniques could make up for some limitations posed by the traditional one.
eDNA techniques have already substituted traditional survey methods.
What’s the advantage of eDNA sampling
It can detect species from photos and videos.
It can help scientists capture endangered species.
It improves adaptability to different researching environments.
It can identify any living creature with a sample of it.
What could eDNA data be applied to in the future
Studying microbial communities.
Analyzing diversity changes over time.
Collecting species in new environments.
Offering statistics for ocean supervision.
What’s the main idea of the text
New biodiversity monitoring techniques are around the corner.
Traditional survey methods are abandoned for their shortcomings.
Rare species have been discovered with two analysis methods.
Scientists have made a breakthrough in undersea research.

Shein exemplifies a new style of Chinese multinational
Xu Yangtian founded Shein in 2008. The creator of the fashion world's latest hit is a specialist in search-engine optimisation (最优化). This year Shein's gross merchandise value (GMV) is forecast to surpass $20 billion. By 2022 analysts expect Shein's (GMV) to overtake Zara's revenues. 36
The first is a turbocharged version of the fast-fashion formula of offering a constantly updated range of garments at bargain-basement prices. Whereas Zara launches about 10, 000 new products a year, Shein releases 6, 000 fresh “stock-keeping units” every day.
Shein tests the new designs simultaneously(同时地) on its app. If a new design is popular, the company quickly orders more. 37
38 . Besides handing out products free of charge to influencers, it has recruited local designers in America and several other countries. As well as dreaming up new clothes, they market its products and backstories on social media.
The third ingredient is brilliant avoidance of geopolitical controversy. Shein wears its Chineseness lightly. Unlike other Chinese brands such as Huawei, it sells next to nothing domestically. 39 . Western consumers assume that like most of their clothing, Shein clothing is made in Asia.
40 . The company relies on collecting lots of data from American shoppers. Shein's Western competitors may use national security as a reason to fight against its relentless(不留情面的) rise. That would be a compliment — after a fashion.
Shein is a huge success.
Shein's success has three threads.
That makes them gain support from Chinese citizens.
That weakens its association with China in Western eyes.
If consumers shrug(耸肩) at the new style, no more orders are placed.
For all its stupendous(惊人的) success, Mr Xu's formula is not without risks.
Shein has used digital understanding also in sales and marketing — the second thread of its success.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I didn’t like Del so much. He always called me the nickname “Germy,” which meant “dirty,” instead of my real name “Jamie.” Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So when the head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done something mean to someone. Through the window, I caught sight of a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy, too.
He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What else could such an annoying boy do “He must have hit the boy and was sent home,” I whispered to my friends. Their eyes widened. It felt good to see them so interested in what I said.
The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled (开除) for beating up a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shifted their desks away. “What’s your problem ” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,” said Del. I could tell he was joking, but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone.
During recess (课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of the players said. “Why ” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him.
Later that day, I learned what really happened. The kid was Del’s little brother and he was crying because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I started a rumor (谣言).
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game.

One Possible Version:
At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game. I hated the nickname “Germy,” but seeing him isolated was also not what I wanted. Guilt pushed me to him. “What do you want, Germy ” Del asked, his voice sounding more hurt than angry. I sat next to him and gradually uttered the whole thing about how my hasty assumption turned into such a terrible rumor. “I’m sorry. I wish I had never said that,” I apologized, daring not to look into his eyes. Annoyance and surprise flickered across his face. But seconds later, he lowered his head and said quietly, “It’s okay. I guess I wasn’t very nice to you, either.” His words soothed me, but I could feel he was still sad.
Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over. I walked towards the kickball players and called for their attention. Everyone stopped in surprise. “Del didn’t beat up anyone,” I stated, explaining what actually happened. Whispers of astonishment spread and finally one player shouted, “Alright, Del, do you want to join my team ” A smile broke through Del’s gloomy face, “Yes, and I want Jamie on it, too!” He glanced at me shyly, and I could tell his use of my real name was his way of making an apology. Soon the playground was filled with laughter and talks. But this time they made me realize something — words have the power to hurt and heal.
Another possible version:
At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game. I walked up to him, so nervous that I could hardly talk. “Hey,” I said. “What do you want, Germy ” Del said impatiently without taking his eyes off the game. I could feel something in his voice sounded more hurt than angry. I summoned up my courage and explained to him the whole story. Surprised and angry, Del looked at me with an unbelievable look. “I will tell everyone the truth,” I promised. Del’s face softened a bit. “Okay, Jamie. I owe you an apology too,” he said with a shrug. It was the first time he’d used my real name. I almost smiled. I knew I had done the right thing.
Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before recess was over. The game was still going on. I approached the players and asked them to stop for a moment. Everyone, including Del, was surprised. “Guys, I am sorry, but I got something to say.” I admitted that it was I who started the rumor. “Del didn’t beat up anyone,” I said. Upon hearing this, the players were confused for a brief moment but soon figured out what had really happened. “Hey, welcome back,”They waved to Del. Del nodded willingly, with a happy look back to his face. Seeing Del playing the game vigorously, I finally felt relieved that I eventually mended a big mistake.

W: Denis, did you hear that Ms. Long has been promoted to the director of overseas marketing

W: For me, taking a year off between finishing school and going to university was the best thing I could have done.
M: Yeah, too right! I had a great time. I taught English in a tiny school in China. I thought the job would be easy, but it wasn’t. Yet I ended up loving it. The kids were great, and it was a real laugh. Of course, it had nothing to do with my studies — mechanical engineering — but it taught me a lot about how to get along with people. So why was your gap year special
W: Because it brought me to my senses! I’d considered pursuing a degree in hotel management, and decided to use my gap year to get some practical experience. I got placed in a hotel. Within two weeks, I realized I wasn’t cut out for that kind of thing, and then I reapplied to study business administration!

W: Good afternoon and welcome to Literary Corner. Today we’re joined by Philip Anderson, author of bestselling book The Fear Within. Philip, welcome.
M: Hi, and thanks.
W: How many bestsellers is that now
M: If you include the current book, it’s four. I’ve been very lucky to do so well.
W: I hear that your first book is being made into a film.
M: Yes, it’s very exciting! I’ll meet with the producer in a few weeks to discuss the release date.
W: Did you get very involved in the film-making process
M: No, filming is taking place in America which is so far away from where I’m based, so I’ve been leaving things to the professionals.
W: So your fans needn’t worry about you leaving writing for a career in Hollywood
M: No, that will never happen. And this coming September I’ll start instructing young adults in creative writing. I think it’s important to encourage new talent. Then I have my next book to start work on.
(Text 10)
W: Well, let me share some of my travel experiences in the Republic of Korea. Last spring, I spent two weeks there. I explored Seoul’s crowded streets and Jeju Island’s relaxing landscapes.
My adventure started in a colorful Airbnb in Seoul. I wandered through lively shopping districts, relaxed in peaceful parks, had tours and enjoyed the exciting nightlife, which included exploring famous streets and experiencing diverse food adventures, from street food to dining at a five-star restaurant.
Then off to Jeju Island which offered a calm contrast. After considering camping, I stayed at a spa hotel and a beach house. Jeju’s beauty shone in its perfect beaches and volcanic landscapes. I loved a visit to a hidden waterfall, which was a highlight for its magical atmosphere. The warmth of the locals and an energetic village festival added to Jeju’s appeal, showcasing the island’s rich cultural traditions.
The Republic of Korea was a mixture of Seoul’s energetic urban life and Jeju’s quiet natural retreats, making it an ideal destination for anyone seeking variety in their travels. Its rich culture, delicious cuisine, and beautiful landscapes left a lasting impression on me. It’s a perfect place for foodies, culture enthusiasts, and nature lovers alike.
