What kind of information is useless? Scientists say that this may

五、 阅读理解。
Nowadays, some schools teach traditional subjects like Maths,
Geography and Language, but they also teach life skills. Life skills classes
teach students how to keep their rooms clean and tidy, take care of their
health, and have healthy personal relationships. Some people say these
classes prepare students better for life in the real world. But other people say
these classes aren’t important. Students should only pay attention to how to
get into university. What do you think?

教材未涉及的新课标词汇
positive adj. 积极的;乐观的
argue v. 争辩;论证
Some people like the idea of teaching life skills in schools. They believe
that life skills classes give students what they need to know to live on their
own, whether they go to college or get a job after high school. They help
prepare students for everyday real-life situations, such as cooking a meal
and managing money. Many of these classes also teach “soft skills”, like
how to listen and talk to people in a positive way, which are important in
the workplace and in personal relationships. As students learn more life
skills, they become more confident in themselves.

On the other hand, some people argue that there is no time for more
subjects at school. They think it’s more important to teach traditional subjects
than life skills at school. Many students choose not to take life skills classes
because these classes don’t improve their chances of getting into university.
People also think it should be the job of parents to teach their kids what they
need to know at home.

Personally, I think we already learn many life skills while doing
traditional subjects. For example, we learn teamwork by doing group
work, and organizing(安排) our homework teaches us how to use our
time well. I believe all schools should teach life skills. It would not need too
much work because there is no need to teach them separately(分开地)
from traditional subjects. This will make sure that students are better prepared
for college and work when they leave school.

五、 阅读理解。
How long should the school year be? In traditional schools, children
are in school over the fall and winter months for about 180 days, and then
are out of school for months. In the 21st century, some schools started to
move towards year-round schooling. Year-round schooling still has students
in school for about 180 days, but they aren’t there continuously, for
example, students in school for 60 days and then out for 20 days.

When students have two consecutive(连续不断的) months off
school, they don’t always remember what they learn during the school year.
Teachers refer to this as Summer Learning Loss. Summer Learning Loss
doesn’t only refer to the information that the students learned, but also the
study habits that they had.
If students are always getting a few weeks off every few months, they
will not become tired of school. Many teachers in traditional schools agree
that with a short rest students can be full of energy before going back to
school.

In the adult world, most people don’t work for nine months and then
take three months off. This is often a hard adjustment for students to make
when they go to work in the future. If a student goes to a year-round school,
he or she is more used to working all over the year.

D. They have to help their parents with farm work.

五、 (2023·苏州市吴中区期中)阅读表达。
In China, many public schools finish classes a few hours before the
end of the parents’ workday. So parents can’t work full days or need others to
help pick up their children.

To help out working parents, the Ministry of Education(教育部)
wants primary and middle schools to close late to make time for working
parents. Before parents pick up their children, there should be after-school
activities in schools. Teachers can help students with their homework.
Students can enjoy their hobbies in groups too. But students can’t have
lessons after school.

In Nanjing, there are free after-school activities in all primary schools
from 2017. In 2021 the schools changed the time from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00
p.m. so that parents can pick up their kids. About 230,000 children in
primary schools do such activities. They are half of all primary school
students in the city.

From this spring, Shanghai public schools also change their school
hours from ending at 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Teachers work for more hours to
look after their students after school. “Teachers take turns to do the
activities,” a 5th-grade teacher in Shanghai says, “and usually I look
after the students every Wednesday and Friday afternoon.”

1. Why does the Ministry of Education want primary and middle schools to
close late?

2. What is the good point of the after-school activities for students?

To make time for working parents.
Students can enjoy their hobbies in groups.

3. What do you think of schools closing later than before? Please give your
reason.

I think it is good. Because before parents pick up their
children, there are after-school activities in schools.(答案不唯
