四、 阅读理解。
Many of us enjoy watching wild animals, and we can learn a lot from
them. Wild geese, for example, tell us what teamwork is. In autumn,
they fly to the warm south to get away from cold winter. They fly in no
order, but they can quickly form a V shape, with one bird leading.
教材未涉及的新课标词汇
teamwork n. 协同工作;配合

This V shape helps wild geese save energy. When the front bird moves
its wings up and down, the force of the air lifts the next one. The bird in the
front has the hardest job. When it gets tired, it moves behind and another
bird takes its place. By sharing the leading role, the group can travel very
far. Wild geese flying in a V shape can fly 70% farther without a rest than the
one flying alone.
During the long flying journey, wild geese communicate with one
another. They honk(鸣叫) to cheer on each other to keep up the speed and
work toward a common goal.
What can we learn from wild geese? Work together! We need the
spirit of teamwork! Teamwork can help us finish tasks better.

Suzhou, a cultural city with a history of more than 2,500 years, is
in East China’s Jiangsu Province. Sixty-nine classical Chinese gardens are
kept in good condition in the city, nine of which are included in the
UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
教材未涉及的新课标词汇
classic adj. 典型的;有代表性的

Suzhou is located in the Taihu Lake basin, in the lower reach of the
Yangtze River, where the geographical conditions are perfect for building
gardens. As a classic representative of classical Chinese gardens, Suzhou
gardens have a long history. During the Tang and Song dynasties, Suzhou
became prosperous(繁荣的) and many celebrities and rich businessmen
came here to build their own gardens. And those private gardens continued to
appear and prosper throughout the following dynasties.

Taihu Lake basin is rich in strangely shaped stones, known as Taihu
Lake Stone, which are excellent materials for gardens and courtyard
arrangements. Chinese garden designers are good at making use of the limited
space. By adding basic elements like Taihu Lake Stone, ponds and
pavilions, the designers seek to create views that look like a painting from
every angle.
When you walk in the gardens, you will have a feeling of travelling
through time and space, as if you were wandering in a Chinese landscape
painting.

1. How many classical gardens of Suzhou are included in the UNESCO
World Cultural Heritage List?

2. What makes Suzhou gardens world-famous?

Nine.
First, Suzhou is located in the Taihu Lake basin, in the lower reach
of the Yangtze River, where the geographical conditions are perfect for
building gardens. Second, Taihu Lake basin is rich in strangely shaped
stones, known as Taihu Lake Stone, which are excellent materials for
gardens and courtyard arrangements.

3. Besides the gardens, what else in Suzhou would you like to recommend
to foreign visitors? Please give your reason.

I would like to recommend Taihu Lake to foreign visitors. Because it is
one of the five major freshwater lakes in China and people can enjoy the
beautiful natural scenery there.(答案不唯一,言之有理即可)

Sadly, the world is facing danger now. It is high time that we should
take proper action. On the one hand, we can call on the government to
make laws to stop people polluting the environment and hurting wildlife.
On the other hand, the public should be aware of the importance of
protecting nature. As students, we should do our part to make
contributions. For example, we can plant some trees.
I hope to do something to help and I am free at weekends. I would
appreciate it if I can be accepted. Please email me at

教材未涉及的新课标词汇
effect n. 效应
This book says our world is in danger. It describes the various threats to
the environment. The situation is so serious that we must do something to
save the earth.

The writers ask us to imagine that the earth is inside a kind of
greenhouse with the atmosphere(大气层) around it. The atmosphere acts
like the glass: It lets sunlight in and keeps warmth from getting out. The
atmosphere is essential for all living things. Without it, the earth would be
as cold and lifeless as the surface of the moon.

“The trouble is that our atmosphere is changing because we are
polluting it with chemicals—in the form of gases—and it is keeping in too
much heat!”
These gases, mainly carbon dioxide(CO2), are produced by
burning fuels(燃料) such as petrol. The greenhouse effect may cause the
level of the sea to rise and flood cities and even whole countries.

The burning and cutting down of the forests is making the greenhouse
effect worse because trees take in CO2. It also causes soil erosion(侵蚀)
and flooding, as well as destroying(摧毁) the homes of people and
animals that live in the forests.

Many of our habits cause pollution, especially our habit of using things
once and then throwing them away. This creates massive mountains of
rubbish. We do not know what to do with the rubbish and it pollutes our land
and sea. For example, people throw away as many as seven billion drink
cans in Britain each year. That is enough to reach from the earth to the moon.
   .
The book is asking us to become “green consumers”. That means we
should only buy and use environmentally friendly goods so that we can save
the earth. These goods will not damage the environment.
Let’s be green consumers and enjoy living a better life on the earth!
