  Schoolchildren spend most of their time surrounded by their peers(同龄人). Peer pressure can have
a huge influence on the lives of children in grades two through twelve.





From birth through age six, the family shapes a child’s sense of
identity(特征). Parents, brothers and sisters affect a child’s likes,
dislikes, tastes in clothing, food and music, and perhaps most
importantly, values. Once children enter school, they form connections
with the larger group of their peers. This group brings new ideas and
experiences. Peer pressure happens when a student’s actions are influenced
by this group. The pressure happens when peers suggest or demand actions
different from the child’s normal behaviour and values.





Peer pressure leads to some disturbing negative behaviour in
schoolchildren. In the USA, about 75% of high school students have tried
alcohol(酒) offered by their friends. According to a survey, students felt
pressured by their peers between 35% and 49% of the time. The power of
peer pressure can result from a schoolchild’s growing desire(渴望) to fit
into a group.





Thankfully, peer pressure can also be positive. For example, wanting
to join an athletic group of friends may force a student who has been sitting
for a long time to try out for the soccer team. In a survey on peer pressure,
51% of teenagers felt that peer pressure was sometimes positive. One
teenager responded, “Sometimes it can help you gain confidence.”

  China Three Gorges University held an activity named “Cellphone
Ninja(手机忍者)”. They would like the students not to use cellphones
for 21 days. It was really a challenge for most students.



The activity started on 12 April, 2016. Each student who volunteered

cellphones, there would be a photo on the screen of the bracelet to show

  Confucianism(儒家思想) has been
followed by Chinese people for over two
thousand years.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, Confucianism teaches the Five Constant Virtues(五常)—ren, yi, li,
zhi and xin. They are general virtues around the world. The most important
two are ren and li.





Ren is the feeling of care and love we should have for others. Confucius
explained ren could best be understood as loving others. He is famous for
teaching people “Do not do to others what you do not want done to
yourself.”. It is quite similar to what is known in the West as the Golden
Rule(treat others as you wish to be treated).





While the meaning of ren is easy to understand, li is a little harder to
express. It can be thought of as duty or even respect. Generally, li is the
way we should connect with people in our everyday life. In Confucian
writings, discussions about li include the proper way to drink tea and how
to remember ancestors(祖先). While ren is mostly about our opinions and
feelings, li is about how we express our opinions and feelings towards
others and towards the world around us.





Perhaps the most well-known Confucian virtue is xiao. Xiao means
loving, respecting, obeying and taking care of one’s parents in their old
age. In Confucianism, xiao is important for a harmonious(和谐的)
society. Without it, the whole world would fall into a mess.

  There are over 800 boarding schools in the UK with students from home
and foreign countries. Boarding schools started hundreds of years ago in the
