so people of all ages are interested in watching TV.

We can relax and learn about what’s going on around the world
by watching TV. TV programmes can improve our knowledge of the
world. However, watching TV for too long is bad for your eyes. You
don’t need to think when watching TV, but you need to think when
reading books. So read more books. It can make you cleverer.
Moreover, if you spend much time watching TV, you will have less

三、 阅读理解。〔人与社会——社会服务与人际沟通〕
教材未涉及的新课标词汇
lawyer n. 律师
rather adv. 相当
Real policemen’s lives can hardly have any similarity to what we see on TV.
The first difference is that a
policeman’s real life is almost around
criminal law. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what can be
used to prove someone guilty and lead him into prison. He has to know nearly
as much law as a professional lawyer, and what’s more, he has to apply it
on his feet, in the dark and rain, running down a street after someone he
wants to talk to.

Little of his time is spent in chatting. He will spend most of his working
life typing millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad,
unimportant people who are guilty of stupid crimes.
Most television crime dramas are about finding the criminal: As soon
as he’s arrested, the story is over. In real life, finding a criminal is seldom
much of a problem. Except in very serious cases like murders and terrorist
attacks, only a little effort is spent on the search.
Having made an arrest, a policeman really starts to work. He has to
prove his case, so he often has to look for a lot of different clues.

A third big difference between the drama policeman and the real one is
the unpleasant pressures. First, as members of a police force, they always
have to behave completely according to the law. Second, as expensive
public servants, they have to get results. They can hardly ever do both. Most
of the time, some of them have to break the rules in small ways.

If a policeman has to deceive the world, the world often deceives him.
Hardly anyone he meets tells him the truth. And most policemen feel the
separation between themselves and the rest of the world is deepened. Some
people are simple-minded in some ways. They suggest not punishing the
criminals in a very strict way in the hope that this will make them reform. The
result, most policemen feel, is that nine-tenths of their work is recapturing
people who should have stayed in prison. This makes them feel rather bad.

( B )1. Most crime dramas on TV end with .
A. a terrorist attack B. a criminal being arrested
C. another crime happening D. the discovery of clues
( D )2. What can we infer from the underlined sentence?
A. Most policemen feel tired out.
B. Strong punishment causes crimes.
C. A policeman’s work is boring.
D. Only a few criminals will reform.
B
D

( C )3. The passage mainly tells us .
A. criminals should behave completely according to the law
B. people usually judge a policeman by his knowledge of law
C. a policeman’s real life is different from what is shown on TV
D. there is separation between the police and the rest of the world

compete v. 竞争;参加比赛
In many people’s eyes, plants are
quiet and passive(被动的). They can’t
talk. They can’t walk. And they can’t think like us. Or can they?
The BBC documentary series, The Green Planet, gives us a new look
at plants. It finds the wonderful and dramatic ways that plants behave. “The
Green Planet shows the secret lives of plants on the earth,” editor Elle
Hunt wrote in New Scientist.

Plants compete against each other to live. Each species(物种) has its
own ways of defense(防御). In tropical(热带的) rainforests, different
kinds of plants compete for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a
“battlefield(战场)” in the documentary.
Plants also help each other and even communicate. In deserts, the roots
of Euphrates poplar trees are connected. If a tree finds water, it will share it
with others through the roots. Studies also show that plants use fungi(真
菌) in the soil as a way to “talk” to each other. It’s kind of like how Wi-Fi
works. If a tomato plant gets a leaf disease, it can tell nearby plants about it.

The documentary not only lets us feel amazed at the plant world but also
pushes us to understand that plants are important. “Plants are the basis of all
life, including ourselves. We depend on them for every mouth of food that
we eat and every lungful of air that we breathe,” said the presenter of the
series. It’s time to look after wild plants just as carefully as our houseplants.
