expert n. 专家 adj. 内行的
  Detectives are important because they
help the police with their investigations
(调查). When the police arrive at a crime scene, it’s not often obvious
(明显的) what happened and who committed the crime. It is normal for the police to search for fingerprints and other clues so that they can understand what happened. However, they must be careful to wear gloves when they check the scene for evidence so that they won’t leave their own fingerprints there. If they’re not careful, it will cause problems for detectives. The detectives may think that the police are suspects. The
detectives’ job is to look at the clues and to try to understand how they are
connected and what story they tell.

Often, detectives are experts at seeing unusual patterns in the clues
that other people might not see. By speaking to witnesses, detectives can
discover new clues that will hopefully lead to the missing person or the
criminal. Sometimes detectives will expect to get more information about the
evidence they have. For example, an expert on blood can tell how old the
blood is. If a witness says that he saw Mr Brown at the crime scene at the
same time, the detectives will know that they need to speak with Mr Brown.
Without detectives, there would be more crimes that remained unsolved and
more people who would remain missing.

( B )1. The police search for clues so that they .
A. have something to do
B. can understand what happened
C. can go home early
D. can tell the detective who the criminal is
B

( C )2. The job of the detectives is to .
A. meet the police for lunch
B. make sure the police wear gloves
C. understand what the evidence means
D. leave their fingerprints at the crime scene

( B )3. If a detective knew that the blood found at the crime scene was
ten hours old, .
A. he would know he needed to speak to the witnesses
B. he would know he needed witnesses who were there 10 hours ago
C. he would know the blood was more than a day old
D. he would know where he could find the witnesses and the suspects

man, rode a wave at Katase Nishihama
Beach on Thursday, March 30, 2023. He
has been recognized as the oldest male to
surf(冲浪) by the Guinness World Records.

But maybe he will just keep surfing. “I think it would be interesting to
try to surf until I’m 100,” Sano said. “I think I take better care of myself
when I have dreams like this. Even now, I take better care of myself than I
did before.”
Sano said he got the idea to try surfing from a worker at his local bank.
The man’s skin was always dark and he did not look like a usual worker. He
said his secret of keeping healthy and energetic was surfing. So, Sano found
a teacher.

Sano gets out most weekends on the black-sand beach. “I don’t
consider myself an old man,” he said in his wet suit, board standing next

can still move forward. I can still do it. I can still enjoy it.”
Several young students who also work with Sano’s surf teacher talked
about Sano.
“I don’t think age matters in surfing,” a 12-year-old surfer said.
“He is so amazing,” added his younger brother.

“To be honest, I was surprised by his age,” said Sano’s surfing
teacher. “I was worried that he would get hurt. I did not know how fit he
was.”

There is a “murderer” among us. You may wonder what is happening.
Let me tell you!
If you get on the Murder Mystery Lunch train from London’s Victoria
Station, you will surely meet such an “experience”. Passengers(乘客)

Before the passengers get on the train, a gentleman named Gray will
greet them in front of the train. He will be the first actor to meet the
passengers. He will have a chat with people and drop some clues.

As soon as the train leaves Victoria Station, a woman will run into the
carriage(车厢) and cry, “I have been stabbed(刺)!” Then a
young man called Matt will rush into the carriage and shout, “There’s been
a ‘murder’. Don’t be afraid!” Then passengers will have time to
question the characters, including a detective, a newspaper reporter and a
policeman about what’s going on.
After the meal, all the passengers will sit together and raise their own
ideas of the “murder”. Those who are able to solve the case can get a bottle
of champagne(香槟酒) as the reward.

五、 任务型阅读。〔人与自我——生活与学习〕
Do you know what a resolution(决心) is?
It’s a kind of promise. Most of the time, we make
promises to other people. For example, “Mum, I
promise I’m going to tidy my room when I get back from school.” Promises you make to yourself are resolutions, and the most common kind is New Year’s resolutions. The start of the year is often a time for making resolutions. When we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our lives. Some people write down their resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps to remember their resolutions. Others tell their family members and friends about their wishes and plans.

There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health.
For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an
exercise programme or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with
self-improvement. These are about making yourself a better person. Some
people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking
photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better
planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. For example, a
student may have to find more time to study.

Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in
common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this.
Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. Sometimes people
just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution
is to have no resolutions! How about you? Will you make any resolutions
next year?
