A Beijing girl surnamed Zhou gave herself a perfect birthday gift in February. The Beijing-based internet company employee got a 200-yuan ($27. 59) cake for half the usual price. The 30-year-old said the cake happened to be her favorite taste and she felt it was the most exceptional find in her year-and-a-half-long buying of “leftover blind box” —or randomly packed boxes of unsold food and drinks available at discounted rates.
Zhou is one among many middle-aged and young people who are increasingly using WeChat’s leftover blind box mini program Cherish Magic Bag, which satisfies consumers’ needs while recommends a low-carbon, low-waste lifestyle. After paying online through the program, consumers can collect the randomly packed boxes of leftover food during appointed time, typically just before closing time, between 8 and 10 pm.
“The original price is generally two to three times the price on the program,” Zhou said, adding that by placing 194 such orders, she ensured that food worth 5, 700 yuan, accounting for 520 kilograms in carbon dioxide emissions, did not go to waste. “I appreciate the environmental concept of the program. In addition, I’m curious and open to trying out different cuisines and new approaches,” she said, adding that she regularly checks for new additions on the program and tries them out.
Despite the discounted prices, Zhou said the quality of the service remains good, encouraging her to buy more using the program.
“The program gets along with the development trend of Internet Plus, in agreement with the sustainable (可持续的) development concept and provides a simple approach to dealing with food wastage by actively engaging with the public,” said Luo Xueming, chief expert at the Guangdong Modern Urban Industrial Technology Research Institute. However, Luo also stressed food quality and safety issues concerning perishable (易腐坏的) products, and emphasized the need to increase consumers’ awareness about food resources, which is important for enlarging the user base and ensuring the long-term success of the initiative. “Once it is widely carried out, this program will hold significant importance for China’s food security strategy, “ he said.
What can we learn about “leftover blind box”
A. It’s sold to the blind. B. It can be got anytime.
C. It is a widespread lifestyle. D. It can be bought at a reduced price.
25. What does the author want to show by mentioning the numbers in paragraph 3
A. Zhou has got a cheaper item.
B. Zhou is fond of the program.
C. Much money has been spent on the program.
D. The program is of great benefit to the environment.
26. What is Zhou’s attitude towards “leftover blind box”
Favorable. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
According to Luo Xueming, which of the following is the biggest concern
A. Food price. B. Food safety.
C. Environmental protection. D. Sustainable development.

Some of the world’s most important scientists think the idea of people living on Mars will come true one day. Stephen Hawking believed humans must move into space to survive. “Once we spread out into space and establish independent colonies (殖民地) , our future should be safe.” he said. Robert Zubrin, a rocket scientist, agrees and thinks starting with Mars makes the most sense. He thinks sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot—for example, about the ability of humans to live in a very different environment.
However, scientists will need to terraform Mars for people to be able to live. One of the main goals of terraforming Mars is to warm it up because the average temperature there is about -60℃. One idea for warming Mars is to build factories there that produce greenhouse gases. This could take many centuries. However, it should lead to rainfall and the growth of plants, resulting in more air that people can breathe.
Another big concern for scientists is whether humans can move to Mars and still stay healthy in mind and body. As a test, six people lived in a Mars-like environment in Hawaii for a year before “returning to Earth” recently. It was a 1, 200-square-foot room that was on the side of a volcano and used the sun for energy. Christiane Heinicke, one of the people who lived there, said that one of the biggest issues was feeling bored. So humans on Mars would always need to keep themselves busy with various activities. Another important finding was that the people living together should all be able to get along and work together.
One particular organization based in Europe is planning to send the first humans to Mars before 2030. The organization believes that its project is giving people worldwide the chance to be part of the first human crew ever to live on Mars for good. However, many experts think the project’s cost of US$6 billion is too low for it to be successful. The American space agency NASA believes that sending people to Mars would cost about US$100 billion, although this estimate is based on bringing them back to Earth, too. Regardless, it seems that humans living on Mars may well happen a lot sooner than most people believe.

A. To predict the future. B. To show his concern.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To advertise space living.
29. What does the underlined word “terraform” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Warming up a planet.

A. The budget of the project is cost-effective.
B. Greenhouse gases are a must for living on Mars.
C. Hawaii is a place with Mars-like environment.
D. Humans living on Mars will be a reality in the not-too-distant future.
31. What could be a suitable title for the text
A. Life on Mars B. Homes on Mars
C. Mars Exploration. D. Escape from Planet Earth.

Parents may worry that their children aren’t getting enough quality sleep. However, now there’s a smart bed to provide adults with sleep data by a smart app. The SleepIQbed can send a signal of attention to parents when their children are asleep, as well as if they are risking out of bed. If a child is tossing and turning (辗转反侧) , it can also be adjusted to make it more comfortable.
The bed was first introduced at the International Consumer, Electronics Show (CES) . It claims to be the only one in the world, which adjusts with children as they grow. Children don’t need to wear a smart-band or alternative wearable device in bed. Instead, the quality of their sleep is measured by sensors in the bed, which monitor their present, average breathing rate, heart rate and movement. Then it assesses quality of sleep. They are given a SleepIQ score for each night’s sleep. Using an accompanying app, parents can see it clearly. It also allows parents to monitor routines (常规) that affect sleep, such as exercise, caffeine and screen time, helping them to develop a routine that helps develop a good night’s shut-eye.
The bed sends a signal to the app when it senses a child is out of bed or is restless, such as if he is having a nightmare (噩梦) . Its firmness can be adjusted to change the level of comfort and support to suit children as they grow. A “head tilt (倾斜) “ feature for reading is built in, and parents can remotely turn a light out after reading time using the app. There are also fun features such as a “monster scanner”, which uses a mobile phone to check for and fight monsters under the bed. What’s more, an automatic light will guide children, if they need to get up in the middle of the night.
The bed is available online and at Sleep Number stores in the US from around$499, almost the same as the beds we are sleeping on.
32. What effect does the SleepIQbed have on children
A. Their sleep quality will be improved.
B. Their sports performance will be improved.
C. Their health condition will be improved greatly.
D. They no longer need to get up in the middle of the night.

B. Children will never fall out of the SleepIQ bed.
C. The smart bed is as cheap as an ordinary one.
D. Another smart bed is needed with children growing older.
34. What can be inferred from having the SleepIQ bed
A. Children won’t have a nightmare.
B. Parents can be free from some worries.
C. Children had better not read on the bed.
D. Parents don’t need to care for children any more at night.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. How to get a good sleep.
B. How parents take care of children.
C. The smart bed helping sleep better.

The bus driver shouted over his shoulder, “Where are your shoes, lady It is freezing out there.”
“I can’t afford shoes,” the woman answered. “I got on the bus just to get my feet warm,” the woman continued. “If you don’t mind, I’ll just ride around with you for a bit.” Some of the boys at the back exchanged glances and rolled their eyes.
The driver scratched (挠) his head and shouted, “Now just tell me how come you can’t afford shoes ”
“I got eight kids. They all got shoes. There’s not enough left for me.”
Frank looked down at his new Nike basketball shoes. His feet were warm and comfortable. And then he looked back at the woman. Her socks were torn. Her coat, missing buttons, hung open around her stomach, as swollen (肿大的) as a basketball.

Dear Henry,
How is everything going with you Glad to learn that you are to visit China in the summer holiday. I’m writing to recommend to you my favorite tourist attraction.
When I read your letter, the first place that popped into my mind is Xishuangbanna, located in the southwest of China. You can enjoy the fascinating dances of Dai people there as well as all kinds of delicious food, especially the local snacks. What impresses me most is the Water Splashing Festival, at which people splash water onto each other to express their wishes. Colorful culture and customs are another chief reason why I recommend the place.
I’m sure the trip will be a visual feast for you. I’m looking forward to hearing from you about it. (127 words)

He would probably always be able to afford shoes, but she probably never would. In such a cold and gray day, he still had Nike shoes, warm and comfortable while the pregnant woman wore no shoes with only torn socks. Laughter from other school kids circulated around the bus. Staring at the invisible lady, his frozen knot in his stomach melted away, and an idea popped up in his mind. With the bus coming to the terminal stop, and others emptying off, Frank raced to the lady, pulled out some notes and handed them to her. In a split second, the lady was overwhelmed by a wave of confusion and surprise. Looking into her eyes, he said, “Take the money and buy you/yourself a pair of shoes! “
He then hurried to the door when he heard the woman exclaim, “Thank you, young man. “ Hearing all this, the bus drivers looked over his shoulder and asked Frank what his name was. His cheeks burning, Frank turned around to face him and answered quietly, “Frank Daily”. Rooting Frank’s name in his heart, he said that he had never witnessed such a heart-warming scene in his career. Meanwhile, the lady sobbed in gratitude, “I thought no one would notice me—an invisible individual. “ Getting off the bus, a wave of warmth boiled up inside Frank. On the way back home, he hopped like a bird and could hardly feel the biting wind.
He would probably always be able to afford shoes, but she probably never would. At the thought of this, a wave of sadness and empathy took hold of him. Then, he hid himself behind the seat, arching his back and holding tightly onto the heel of his shoes. Squeezing his feet out of shoes, he straightened up and noticed that the bus came to the terminal stop. The crowds rushed to get off, jostling each other and leaving Frank and the woman on the bus. With his heart pounding, Frank picked up the shoes, walked towards the woman and handed them to her, uttering, “Lady, you’re the one who really needs them. “ His deed left the lady standing with a sealed mouth for a few seconds.
He then hurried to the door when he heard the woman exclaim, “Thank you, young man. “ Wheeling around and looking at the woman, Frank cracked a bright smile. Having witnessed this heart-warming scene, the driver approached, tapping Frank on his shoulder and saying, “Well done, boy! Your remarkable deed deserves the best praise! “ The word “invisible” gradually faded away from his mind, which was then replaced with positive words. Now a current of warmth settling over the bus, their faces lit up. Walking home with bare feet, the snow-capped road failed to freeze him, as his kindness warmed up the hearts of the two “invisible” persons.

Homes on Mars “
One of the main goals of terraforming is to warm it up. . .
One idea for warming Mars is to build factories there that produce greenhouse gases. This could take many centuries. However, it should lead to rainfall and the growth of plants, resulting in more air that people can breathe.
Some of the world’s most important scientists think the idea of people living on Mars will come true one day.

Text 10
Historic England is an organization that advises the government on how to look after traditional buildings and places. It has chosen 60 of the best photos from the public for an outdoor exhibition about everyday life called Picturing High Streets. The pictures range from portraits of people to photos of cafes and shops. The exhibition is touring England, starting in Derby from 17 March to 9 April. The photos will be shown in different ways, such as in shop windows and on big advertising boards.
In London, the show will also feature photos by Jamil, who has been working with primary school pupils. Jamil told The Week Junior that a great high street “should be a place where people feel welcome and connected to their local community”. Jamil says that Petticoat Lane, where he took many of his photos, has these important ingredients.
