Some books to look forward to in 2024
The first few months of 2024 are piled with exciting and interesting reads . If you're looking to get a jump ahead on the holds from your local library, here are just a few books we 're looking forward to.
James by Percival Everett
Celebrated author Percival Everett gives us Huckleberry Finn from Jim's point of view. It's far from a straight re -telling, though. Instead, Everett (but off his 2001 book Erasure being adapted into the film American Fiction) uses the beats of the original story to give us a send-up of language and race.(Pub. March.19)
The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo
This standalone fantasy was inspired by the best-selling author's own family history. It takes place during the Spanish Golden Age and follows a servant, hiding the fact that she can perform miracles. (Pub. Apr.9)
Private Equity by Carrie Sun
A memoir (回忆录) about the daughter of Chinese immigrants who ended up becoming an assistant to a billionaire hedge fund (对冲基金)founder. It's an examination of the hustle and tiring lifestyle that spreads American work culture, and the costs of extreme wealth. (Pub.Feb.13)
Legacy by Uché Blackstock
Uché Blackstock has had a long career in medicine as a doctor and as a professor of emergency medicine. Her account follows her growing up wanting nothing more than to be doctor, and discovering all parts of the systemic (全面性的) issues that lend to poorer health outcomes for Black Americans. (Pub, Jan.23)

Like so many other ABCs ( American-born Chinese) and younger first- and second- generation Chinese immigrants(移民),sisters Sarah and Kaitin Leung reached a point in their adult lives when they started to long for the Chinese food they'd grown up on, but found it really difficult to learn how to prepare it. There was such a " representation gap" as Sarah puts it, in terms of what kinds of cuisines were noticeably featured in those early days of TV celebrity chefs and the emerging food blogosphere (博客圈).
As it turns out, though, the Leungs were uniquely positioned to do something about it. Bill, the father, had spent years cooking beef at his family's Chinese American takeout restaurant. Judy, the mom, was born and raised in Shanghai and had deep knowledge about traditional Shanghainese cooking. Meanwhile, the two sisters had grown up in the New Jersey suburbs, eating their parents' food, but also growing in America's own food-obsessed culture.
So, in 2013, the Leungs started The Woks of Life. What distinguished their blog from others was that the intergenerational heritage(传承)of knowledge that the Leungs were so eager for was baked right into the concept —The four family members took turns posting recipes, each sharing their own favorites, tapping into their own areas of expert knowledge.
Kaitlin is proud that The Woks of Life follows a long line of pioneers— folks like Joyce Chen, Martin Yan and Ming Tsai, who first started to bring Chinese home cooking into the mainstream in the U.S. "We feel proud that we have made a meaningful mark over the past decade, casting light that there's a huge demand for these recipes," she says. "It's about representation, yes, but there's also a huge demand. Asian Americans look to reconnect with the food of their heritage. "
Five years ago, you wouldn't have been able to find a ton of Chinese recipes in the New York Times food section, Kaitlin notes. Now you can.

Have you ever seen your cat or dog eat grass They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called "zoo pharmacognosy" or, more commonly, animal self-medication.
Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of these daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behavior in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a species of Cabreúva, which is well known for its medical properties.
Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it.
Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behavior similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other's fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites(寄生虫).
While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-medication, the use of it suggests that Cabreúva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species maintain their magnitude by improving their health.
This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.
28. Why do tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree
A. They are trying to cure diseases.
B. They would like to digest what they eat.
C. They feel like occupying the land.
D. They are attracting companions' attention.
29. What do researchers find through camera-traps
A. Many animals copy monkeys' behavior.
B. Animals can help each other clean the fur.
C. The Cabreúva is the habitat of tamarin monkeys.
D. Resin can be used as medicine for some animals.
30. What does the underlined word " magnitude" in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. population B. characteristics.
C. similarities. D. flexibility.
31. What is the possible significance of the discovery according to the last part
A. Promoting evolution of creatures.
B. Increasing the production of resin.
C. Contributing to forest conservation.
D. Motivating the study of monkeys' diet.

Summer tomatoes are so filled with promise: the red color; the grassy tomato-leaf smell; the expectation of a mouthful of sweet-salty tomato dishes. But supermarket tomato after supermarket tomato does little more than disappointment. How can a fruit with so much potential constantly taste slightly juicy at best and a globe of cardboard at worst
We know that modern tomatoes sold at the supermarket are picked green and grown for pest resistance, shipping, and shelf life and that the agriculture industry creates produce designed for profit, not flavor. Are these the factors to blame for the tomato's poor taste
But even when allowed to ripen(成熟)before they are harvested and shipped with great care, modern tomatoes are still tasteless. When researchers looked into this tomato matter, they uncovered a fascinating genetic cause for the fruit's dullness. What to blame is a gene mutation(基因突变)discovered accidentally around 70 years ago, onto which tomato growers quickly relied. In fact, now the mutation has been deliberately grown into nearly all modern tomatoes.
Why It makes them a uniform and attractively red when they are ripe. Unfortunately for tomato lovers far and wide, the red-making mutation stops the activeness of an important gene responsible for producing the sugar and smell that are essential for a good smelling and flavorful tomato, as reported in the paper, which was published in the journal Science. When the researchers "turned on" the gene that had stopped working, the fruit had 20% more sugar and 20%—30% more carotenoids(类胡萝卜素)when ripe. Yet the fruit's non-uniform greenish color suggests that mainstream growers will not be following suit anytime soon.
However, for anyone with a nearby farmer's market, a supermarket that offers traditional produce, or a garden in the back, there is another choice instead of cardboard-flavored tomatoes. Traditional tomatoes and wild species have not had the essence of tomatoes sucked out of them by selective growing-so shop for those or grow them yourself. They may not look like the Disney version of a perfect fruit, but they actually taste like tomatoes.
32. Why is a question raised at the end of paragraph 1
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To draw a conclusion from comparison.
C. To encourage readers to take action.
D. To express disappointment at supermarket tomatoes.
33. Why are modern tomatoes tasteless
A. They have ripened when picked.
B. They are affected by gene mutation.
C. They are kept on the shelf for too long.
D. They are treated with chemicals for shipping.
34. What's a disadvantage of the tomatoes the researchers grew according to paragraph 4
A. Taste. B. Color. C. Size. D. Production.
35. What's the author's attitude toward traditional tomatoes
A. Critical. B. Curious. C. Unconcerned. D. Favorable.

When he hears about the school's talent show, he decides to sign up so that he can share his comedy from the stage. He has never done real stand-up comedy before, and he is very excited. But when some of the students find out he will participate, they laugh at him._37
Brian cannot understand why they are being so unkind to him. For a moment, he thinks about telling the talent show organizers he will not participate. 38 He does not know why these other students are being so negative, but he decides to go ahead and prepare his comedy routine for the talent show.
Brian decides to do a great job at the talent show to prove to the mean students that they are wrong. Everyone loves his routine, and he wins the first prize! 39_Brian just shakes his head and wonders what their problem is. He does not understand, but he realizes that it has nothing to do with him. He happily continues to work toward his goal.
_40 Luckily, they are the minority, and as he works hard to become a comedian, most of the people he meets encourage him and help him to become even funnier. He gets more and more opportunities to perform, and he is even invited to appear on television and act in movies.
But then he remembers how much his friends and teachers like his jokes.
Because all his friends all loved him.
What he loves most is to make people laugh.
Even so, the same students tell Brian he is dumb and that he will never be a successful comedian.
As the years go on, Brian meets more people like that.
Brian thinks it does not feel very good when someone laughs at you in a mean way!
Therefore, he just makes up his mind to quit the performance.

In Whitney High School, Cerritos, California, which was known for its academic excellence and competitive atmosphere, there were two friends, Sam and Emily, who were preparing for their final exams. Sam and Emily were best friends and had always studied together. Sam was naturally gifted in mathematics, while Emily excelled in history. As their final exams approached, they promised to help each other with their weaker subjects.
They spent weeks preparing, exchanging notes, and quizzing each other. Sam helped Emily understand complex mathematics problems, and Emily helped Sam remember historical dates and events. Their friendship grew stronger as they worked towards their common goal.
However, as the exam day neared, Sam started to feel huge pressure. His parents had high expectations, and he was afraid of letting them down. He began to doubt his abilities, especially in history, which was his weakest subject. Emily noticed Sam’s anxiety and tried to reassure him, but Sam’s stress only seemed to increase. The night before the history exam, Sam admitted to Emily that he was considering cheating because he was so afraid of failing.
Emily was shocked and disappointed. She reminded Sam of all the hard work they had put in and the serious consequences cheating could have. She told him that it was better to try and fail honestly than to succeed through dishonesty.
On the day of the history exam, Sam was extremely nervous. He remembered Emily’s words and knew she was right. He decided to face the exam honestly, using what he had learned from their study sessions.
During the exam, Sam struggled with some of the questions, but he did his best to answer them without turning to cheating. When the exam ended, he felt a mix of relief and uncertainty. He had stuck to his values, but he wasn’t sure if he had done enough to pass the subject.

【答案】One possible version:
A few weeks later, the exam results were announced. Sam passed his history exam with an acceptable grade! He was overjoyed and relieved. He realized that he might have got a higher score if he had cheated, but the score was his honest effort, and that made it more valuable. Emily was proud of Sam for making the right choice. She told him that honesty was much more important than any grade.
The experience of preparing for and taking the exams strengthened the bond between Sam and Emily. They learned that facing challenges together, with honesty and support for each other, was more important than the outcome of any test. From then on, Sam approached challenges with more confidence and integrity, and Emily continued to be a supportive friend. Together, they realized that the true test was not in the exams they took but in the choices they made and the kind of people they chose to be.
