At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful." I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”“barley(意米)and“warm”
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person. “'You need to be braver," he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke.” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions, Could it help me go beyond mine My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word you see the body, Though a word on the-dimensional,it contains multitudes, conveying the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine.’ I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better, I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow, Trust yourself. This word is yours." He might as well have said, “This word is you.’
What did the author initially think of her name “Chen Yiwen”
A. It was lucky so she gladly accepted it.
B. She felt proud of its symbolic meaning.
C.She understood the intention but still disliked it.
D.Its strange pronunciation made her embarrassed.
25. The author decided to learn calligraphy to
A. pick up a new hobby B.reconnect with her origin
C.highlights the design of strokes D. fit in with local community
26. From the teacher's words, the author learns that calligraphy
A. reflects the creator's spirits B.comes from creative energy
C.highlights the design of strokes D. depends on constant practice
27. What does the author intend to tell us
A. Appreciate what our culture offers. B. Find beauty from your inner self.
C. A great teacher leads you to truth. D.We are the sum of what we create

Against the supposition that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.
This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling.
This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming.Ozone(臭氧)levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer tree covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling“.
We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.Scientists tracked the change in amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicated, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from
the earth.
According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may
A result in a warming climate
B.cause the forest fires to occur more frequently
C.lead to a longer fire season
D. protect the forests and the environment there
29. The following are all the immediate effects after a forest fire EXCEPT
A large amounts of greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere
B the levels of ozone which is a type of oxygen increase
C.snow on the ground mirrors more sunlight back into space
D. ashes from the fire fall on the ice surface and take in more radiation from the sun
30. Earlier studies about northern forest fires
A. analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate
B. indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere
C. suggest that people should take measures to protect the environment
D.suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming
31. From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may
A. warm the climate as the supposition goes
B. allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate
C. destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice
D.help to gain more energy rather than release more energy
D
Imagine this. You need an image of a balloon for a work presentation and turn to an Al text-to-image generator, like Midjourney or DALL-E, to create a suitable image. You enter the prompt (提示词)“ red balloon against a blue sky” but the generator returns an image of an egg instead.
What's going on The generator you're using may have been “poisoned’. What does this mean Text-to-image generators work by being trained on large datasets that include millions or billions of images. Some of the generators have been trained by indiscriminately scraping online images, many of which may be under copyright. This has led to many copyright infringement (仅害) cases where artists have accused big tech companies of stealing and profiting from their work.
This is also where the idea of “ poison" comes in. Researchers who want to empower individual artists have recently created a tool named “Nightshade” to fight back against unauthorized image scraping. The tool works by slightly altering an image's pixels (像索)in a way that confuses the computer vision system but leaves the image unaltered to a human's eyes. If an organization then scrapes one of these images to train a future Al model, its data pool becomes “ poisoned". This can result in mistaken learning, which makes the generator return unintended results. As in our earlier example, a balloon might become an egg.
The higher the number of “poisoned" images in the training data, the greater the impact. Because of how generative Al works, the damage from “poisoned" images also affects related prompt keywords. For example, if a “poisoned" image of a Picasso work is used in training data, prompt results for
masterpieces from other artists can also be affected.Possibly, tools like Nightshade can be abused by some users to intentionally upload “poisoned images in order to confuse Al generators. But the Nightshade's developer hopes the tool will make big tech companies more respectful of copyright. It does challenge a common belief among computer scientists that data found online can be used for any purpose they see fit.
Human rights activists, for example, have been concerned for some time about the indiscriminate use of machine vision in wider society. This concern is particularly serious concerning facial recognition. There is a clear connection between facial recognition cases and data poisoning, as both relate to larger questions around technological governance. It may be better to see data poisoning as an innovative solution to the denial of some fundamental human rights.
32. The underlined word “scraping” (para. 2) is closest in meaning to
A. Facilitating
B.collecting
C.damaging
D. Polishing
33.According to the passage, adding poisoned data might
A. increase the accuracy of returned information
B. cause users to forget the prompt key words
C. interfere with the training of generative Al
D.discriminate against great masterpieces
34. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. Data poisoning is somehow justified to direct attention to human rights
B. Computer scientists has learned to respect the copyright of most artists.
C.Nightshade is being abused by human rights activists to recognize faces.
D The issue of technological governance has aroused the lawyers' interest.
Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A Data Poisoning: Government Empowering Citizens to Protect Themselves
Data Poisoning: Addressing Facial Recognition Issues Among Artists
C. Data Poisoning: Risks and Rewards of Generative Al Data Training
D.Data Poisoning: Restricting Innovation or Empowering Artists
第二节 七选五(共 5小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
“TALKING with you for one night is better than studying books for ten years” this was the comment of an old Chinese scholar after he had had a conversation with a friend. 36 And today the phrase “'a night's talk” has become a current expression for a happy conversation with a friend at night, either past or expected.
Such a supreme pleasure as having a perfect con with a friend at night is necessarily rareE37for as the playwright Li Liweng has pointed out,“ 37 The discovery of a man up in a mountain temple, who really understands life and at the same time understands the art of conversation, must therefore be one of the keenest pleasures, like the discovery of a new planet by an astronomer or of a new variety of plant by a botanist.
There is an evident distinction between mere talking and conversation as such. This distinction is made in the Chinese language between shuohua (speaking) and tanhua (conversation), which implies that in conversation the language used is more chatty and leisurely and the topics more trivial and less business like.
38 We can discuss business with almost any person, but there are very few people with whom we can truly hold a night's conversation. Hence, when we do find a true conversationalist, the pleasure is equal to, if not above, that of reading a delightful author, with the additional pleasure of hearing his voice and seeing his gestures.
there will be chats about ghosts and fox spirits, mixed with amusing tales or39impassioned comments: on international affairs, and sometimes before we know it, a wise observer and conversationalist may shed light on things that have bothered you for a long time.40
A There is much truth in that statement.
B Friendship fades without a sincere conversation.
Whatever it is, conversationalist does contribute to our happiness.
Such conversations remain among the memories that we cherish for life.
Those who are wise seldom know how to talk, and those who talk are seldom wise.
A similar difference may be noted between business letters and the letters of literary friends.
Sometimes we find it at the happy reunion of old friends, or among strangers on a distant journey

One day at school, as Kelly left the dance studio she walked past the gym, fascinated by boxers training inside the boxing ring. She was deeply impressed by how hard they hit and how fast they moved. In fact she had long been attracted to boxing.
She pulled a piece of paper from her backpack, The big title Boxing Club Tryout (选拔) caught her eyes. That was what Kelly really wanted to do. She knew her mom had high expectations for her when it came to ballet. Tired of trying to keep up with her sister, Kelly was ready to create her own way.

But when she saw Kelly was serious, she replied,“You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you're so good at ballet. Lean into your strength, Kelly.”
“But this is where I want to put my strength," Kelly insisted, “and what exactly does 'only for boys mean, anyway Boxing is a sport for everyone!”
Gradually, touched by her determination and passion. Serena began to understand and support her Kelly could feel it. Her sister was going to respect her decision no matter what. 1.范文1:
Then Kelly began her training for the tryout, keeping it a secret from her mom. Everyday afternoon when she was off from school, she directly strode to the boxing ring to learn the basic footing, different striking from different angles. It was an exhausted workout, especially for a beginner like her. Years of ballet practice made her both arms and fists too supple to change them into powerful one. But she could endure all the hardship because that was what she chose. What she could not bear was when she came back home and lied to her mom about her day, making up all the ballet thing. These new normal came to an end when the final day of selection was scheduled to a Friday.
The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout came out. Kelly stood on the tiptoes to reach the top the list. Her eyeballs moved rapidly in search of her name. The first column, none. The second column, neither. Her heart pounded fiercely. The third column was her last hope. The last but two was hers — Kelly! She made her entrance to the club. She rushed home to break the sweat bitter news to her mom. With her sister Serana backing her firmly, her mom finally agreed that Kelly could follow her passion to boxing.
范文2:
Then Kelly began her training for the tryout, keeping it a secret from her mom. It felt so odd when the training spot was filled with boys and she as an only female there was toiled for the musculinary fist striking and standing with typical boxing posture. However, it didn’t affect her determination at all. Day by day she was building up her strength. When the big day for tryout came, she knew she was ready for it. Only one thing troubled her determined mind, which was how to tell the truth to her mom.
The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout came out. Kelly’s name was printed on the top of the list. She smiled to herself inwardly. Hard work paid off. The only problem left was to convince her mom that boxing was her real passion and she wished to chase what she loved to do. Serena promised to help her when she broke the news. At first mom was startled and furious that Kelly cheated on her. However, gradually she sensed that it was time to let her child follow her heart to do something she persisted. She started to appreciate that her daughter actually outgrew her wit.
