Cecily Eklund has always loved her baby dolls. When she was six, she needed them more than ever. She had to go through brain-cancer operation, so her baby doll could stay with her during the long imaging appointments, Besides the materials it was made with, the doll was unique in that it had no facial features. “So it can have any emotion,” says Cecily, who was inspired to create these dolls, called “Blessing Babies”, for other sick kids.
She and her mom began making more, donating some to children's hospitals and selling others to fundraisers. Due to the high demand, they invited other doll makers to work alongside them. Soon, doll makers worldwide also began contributing, sending boxes of their handmade dolls to support the cause.
Cecily's charitable career grew. She began selling handmade dolls and inspirational clothing patches (小块) , in addition to running fundraisers for various charities. So far, Cecily has raised $200, 000.
Cecily's generosity caught the attention of Evander Kane, the Oilers' power forward, who met her in the press box at a game in December 2022. They've had a special friendship ever since. “Cecily is battling brain cancer, and if you met her, you wouldn't know,” Kane said in an interview with Sportsnet last autumn. “She's just such an amazing human being because while she's going through all these things, she does so much and uses up so much of her own time to give back.”
Today Cecily calls herself a brain cancer survivor and “childhood cancer awareness warrior (勇士) ” but she is still followed closely by her team at the children's hospital. When asked for advice on successful fundraising, she stresses the importance of generosity, “You don't get poor by giving,” Cecily says. “Because you always get something back, one way or another.”

A. Admiring. B. Thankful. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.

C. Time and tide wait for no man. D. Actions speak louder than words.

On a piece of land of five acres in Rancho Mirage, a desert city in California known for its holiday hotels and golf courses, a vision of the future of housing is about to be created.
That is because 480 miles away, in a warehouse (仓库) in Oakland, 3D printers the size of garages are building houses for the world's first fully 3D-printed living neighborhood. It is the result of a partnership between two California companies.
Rancho Mirage is not the first place to have 3D-printed buildings. In 2019, a Mexican charity made 3D-printed homes for low-income families, while China has for years printed multi-floor office blocks and flats.
However, a whole new neighborhood of 15 eco-friendly printed homes that are large and beautiful is groundbreaking, the project's founders say. Construction is expected to take 18 months, raising hopes that 3D-printing could relieve California's housing stress. Rapid population growth is set to create a shortfall of 3. 5 million homes within four years.
3D printers use molten (熔化的) material to create layers from the ground up. The California homes use man-made stone, which hardens in sunlight and is stronger and lighter than concrete (混凝土) . The roof can also be printed, allowing the houses to be built as if made of Lego bricks.
The 135 square meters Rancho Mirage homes, 120 miles from Los Angeles, will have mid-century modern architecture—simple lines with minimal decoration. Each will have three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a swimming pool.
28. What are to be built in Rancho Mirage
A. Hotels. B. Garages. C. Houses. D. Golf courses.
29. Why are Mexico and China mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. To make a comparison of income between the two countries.
B. To show 3D-printing technology is widely used in construction.
C. To call on the rest of the world to invest more in house building.
D. To list the countries with the most advanced 3D-printing technology.
30. What does the underlined word “relieve” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Reduce. B. Cause. C. Ignore. D. Discover.
31. Where is the text probably from
A. An advertisement. B. A textbook. C. A guidebook. D. A newspaper.
D
Every kid loves dandelions (蒲公英) . Blow on the soft white head and seeds fly everywhere.
Dandelion seeds can travel for miles before finally floating down and settling somewhere new, But without the help of children, the seeds still fly away and researchers recently discovered how the plants decide to spread.
Each seed is tied to about 100 short hairs, which are combined to form a parachute-like top to help the seeds move. When the seeds come unattached from the head of the flower, the parachute (降落伞) hairs catch a ride on the wind, carrying the seeds away.
“We noticed that the dandelion parachute is closed in foggy mornings but then open again when the sun is up during the day,” study author Naomi Nakayama says. “So we wanted to know how this closure of the parachute affects the flight.”
This hairy parachute closes when the air is humid (湿热的) , which often means the wind is weak. In drier, more windy conditions, dandelions widen their parachutes to better catch the wind so the seeds can fly freely. “The dandelion uses a group of hairs to increase air drag (空气阻力) and aid its flight,” says Nakayama. “Unlike insects or birds, they don't need any energy input to fly a long distance—even hundred of kilometers—they simply catch the wind.”
In their new research, scientists have found the “decisions” that the plants make when to open and close. Researchers uncovered the parachutes open and close using something like an actuator, a device that changes energy and signals into movement. But this actuator doesn't use any energy. The middle of the dandelion's parachute is able to sense the amount of humidity by taking in water in the air. Using signals about humidity information, they either open their parachutes and fly off or they close them and stay where they are.
32. What does the underlined word “help” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Planting the dandelions. B. Catching the flying seeds.
C. Picking up the fallen leaves. D. Blowing the head of the flower.
33. What can we learn about dandelion seeds
A. They can be heavy. B. They can travel by wind.
C. They're parachute-shaped. D. They're protected by hairs.
34. What happens to the dandelion parachute on a sunny windy day
A. It gets weak. B. It dries out. C. It opens wide. D. It grows fast.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Flying Flowers B. Strange Plants C. Journey of Seeds D. Dandelions' Decision

The Reasons for Student Burnout
Student burnout can show itself in many ways, from being tired all the time to not feeling like doing anything. 36
Overscheduling can lead to burnout. Students today are too stressed about their grades to enjoy their childhood. Yet, colleges often want more than just good grades. 37 After school, students are sent to soccer practice or ballet. The more they ran around to different activities, the less time they have to themselves
38 Students who suffer from learning problems get extra help at school through tutors and extra classes. However, these students quickly become too anxious about their schoolwork to do well. This is because they still go to regular classes. In those classes, they have to keep asking for help. The more the students need to ask for help, the less confidence they have in themselves at school.
Finally, stress at home causes burnout. 39 Or their parents may work a lot, so the students must help clean the home. They might also have a part-time job and are working too much to study well. The more they work outside of school, the less time they have to focus on grades.
Overscheduling, learning problems, and stress at home are harmful and can cause student burnout. 40 Make sure they are not overscheduled. Talk to teachers about their learning problems. And don't let them work too many hours outside of school.
A. What causes student burnout
B. Parents can help their children.
C. Students are benefiting from it.
D. Learning problems can also cause student burnout.
E. Many students come from families that are under stress.
F. They also want to see students who do volunteer work and play sports.
G. Too much workout can also result in learning problems among students.

A Change of Heart
It was one of those days, an ordinary October day. I woke up feeling tired of all of the housework. I wasn't feeling any sense of thankfulness for my comfortable home or lovely family, I dropped my two older children at school with a sense of relief and unwillingly headed to the supermarket to buy groceries with my youngest.
I was feeling bad at having to go in the first place (why do they have to eat ) and my son, just four years old at the time, responding to my feelings, was being difficult. I raced around with the trolley (手推车) , thoughtlessly throwing items in with no regard to cost, while trying to control my naughty (调皮的) boy whose behavior now was completely out of control. Yes, I was that mother, shouting, threatening, at a small child, the kind of behavior you see in others before you have children and think, I will never be one of those people.
We eventually made it to the checkout, and stood in the queue waiting our turn. After a short time, I noticed that someone had joined the line behind us. I turned around and saw an old man. He was bent over and wore a dirty overcoat, tied around the middle with rope. His shoes were worn out and his trousers hung around sockless ankles on this cold, wet day. In his hands he carried a small bottle of long-life milk.
As I had a trolley full of groceries, I asked him if he'd like to go ahead of me. It wasn't an act of kindness on my part, but rather an automatic (无意识的) reaction, rooted in me since childhood from the time I went shopping with my mother. Perhaps I just did it out of a sense of responsibility or guilt. Perhaps I just wanted him gone. After all, his presence made me uncomfortable, in the same way I feel uncomfortable and look away when passing a homeless person. He looked shocked and uncertain. “No, I couldn't possibly. Are you sure ” “How kind of you!” he said. Hesitantly, he went ahead, paid for his milk, and took his change.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then, to my amazement, he turned to my little boy and gently pressed the change into his hand. Waving back to him, with my young son by my side, I felt a change of heart.

第二节
Then, to my amazement, he turned to my little boy and gently pressed the change into his hand. My son's eyes widened in surprise as he looked up at the old man. I protested that it wasn't necessary but he insisted on doing that. At that moment, something shifted inside me. And my son, who had up to this minute been a troublemaker, smiled his most beautiful smile, looked at this stranger frankly, and without judgment or hesitation, bear-hugged him around his dirty legs. The man gave an embarrassed smile, and then went off, turning again to say thank you and wave.
Waving back to him, with my young son by my side, I felt a change of heart. I realized that my tiredness and annoyance had caused me to lose sight of the joy and gratitude that I once felt for my family and my life. The small acts of kindness, no matter how insignificant they may seem, have the power to transform not only the recipient, but also the giver. This humble, kind stranger had made me resolve to be more thankful and made my little angel skip out of the supermarket with joy. With a light heart, I held my child's hand tightly, fully immersed in this moment of pure happiness.

Text 10
Did you know that tea, one of the most popular drinks in the world, was invented by accident It is said that a Chinese ruler called Shen Nong was the first to discover tea as a drink about 5, 000 years ago.
One day Shen Nong was boiling drinking water over an open fire. Some leaves from a tea plant fell into the water and remained there for some time. It produced a nice smell so he tasted the brown water. It was quite delicious, and so, one of the world's favorite drinks was invented.
A few thousand years later in the Tang Dynasty, Lu Yu, “the saint of tea”, mentioned Shen Nong in his book Cha Jing. The book describes how tea plants were grown and used to make tea. It also discusses where the finest tea leaves were produced and what kinds of water were used.
Tea has many health benefits. The great doctor Sun Simiao, who is also from the Tang Dynasty, mentioned in one of his works that drinking tea regularly made people energetic.
It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. In England, tea didn't appear until around 1660, but in less than 100 years, it had become the national drink. Even though many people now know about tea culture, the Chinese are without doubt the ones who best understand the nature of tea.
