Each year, the nation’s oldest math and science competition, the Regeneron Science Talent Search, selects teenagers based on their achievements, as well as their potential to become world-changing scientists and leaders. Previous finalists have gone on to win Nobel Prizes, National Medals of Science and Fields Medals.
Of over 1, 800 applicants in 2022, Victor Cai, from Parkland High School, was among the search’s top 40 finalists. Each finalist was awarded $25,000 and participated in a week-long competition in March. Top prizes ranged from $40, 000 to $250, 000.
Cai was selected as a finalist for developing a short-range distance sensing radar (雷达) to help blind people get around in their homes. He was inspired to develop his project after his kung fu teacher of 11 years slowly lost his sight due to a rare eye disease. “I was eager to do something for him,” he said.
The traditional radar device can interfere (干扰) with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, making such technology difficult to use in the home. Cai used a little-known radar concept (概念), officially called the Multiple Frequency Continuous Wave. His device is currently about one foot by one foot in height and width. Cai hopes to develop a smaller one that the user can wear around the house.
“Science allows us to create new technologies and to use these technologies to develop ways to make people’s lives better,” he said. “For me, it’s really special to create something that hasn’t been possible before.”
Cai felt excited about meeting his fellow finalists during the competition from March 9 to l6. “It’s nice to have different topics being researched by all the finalists and to know how they are improving our lives,” Cai said. “We all have the shared passion for using science to improve the world.”

Dogs have a special bond with humans. But do dogs, like humans, produce more tears when they are flooded with emotion A new study, which may be the first to look at this question, says that the eyes of dogs do well up with tears. In fact, it happens regularly when they’re reunited with their owners.
“We found that dogs produce tears associated with positive emotions,” says Takefumi Kikusui of Azabu University in Japan. “We also made the discovery of a chemical, oxytocin (催产素), as a possible mechanism (机制) behind it.”
Kikusui and his co-workers made the discovery after one of his two dogs had babies 6 years ago. He noticed that, when his dog was nursing the babies, something changed — there were tears. Those tears don’t fall as they often do in humans but they do get teary eyes. “That gave me the idea that oxytocin is likely to increase tears,” Kikusui says.
They decided to experiment and see if oxytocin would bring dogs to tears. First, they used a standard test to measure dogs’ tear volume (量) before and after reuniting with their owners. They found that tear volume indeed ascended when they got back together with the familiar human and not with a stranger. When they added oxytocin to the dogs’ eyes, their tear volume also rose. That finding supports the idea that oxytocin plays a role in tear production when dogs and their owners get back together. They also asked people to rate pictures of dogs’ faces with and without artificial tears in them, and it turned out that people gave more positive responses when they saw dogs with teary eyes. These findings suggest that dogs’ tear production helps to develop stronger connections between people and their dogs.
Kikusui says they had never heard of the discovery that animals produce tears in joyful situations and that they were all excited that this would be a world first!
Why did the author raise the question in the first paragraph
A. To compare different ideas.
B. To express his personal doubt.
C. To lead in the topic for discussion.
D. To introduce the rich emotions of dogs.
What made Kikusui think oxytocin might increase tears
A. A lesson at university. B. An experience of his own.
C. The interaction with a dog. D. A reminder from his colleagues.
What does the underlined word “ascended” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Increased. B. Decreased.
C. Became zero. D. Remained unchanged.
What did Kikusui think of the experiment’s findings
A. It came as a big surprise. B. It required further evidence.
C. It was within their expectation. D. It was contrary to previous ones.
D
I was born to be a person with a sense of humor. I’ve been told that even in a room of a thousand people, you can always hear me laughing over the crowd. For me, laughter is the ultimate form of embodied joy. And by “embodied”, I mean that my whole body is involved when I laugh. On the inside, it’s like a bubbling fountain of joy spilling out all over the place.
But what is joy, anyway Life can be terrible, but if you decide to follow the sound of the joy-fountain, you will find joy showing up in all kinds of places: pets playfully running around, kindness, or even in nothingness.
How can joy be found A friend moved into a new apartment and needed some help, so I helped him. Afterwards, he was obviously so much happier and at ease. I noticed that playing even a small part in his happiness brought me great joy, and I took a moment to let this feeling of embodied joy in.
We can practice letting joy in by noticing how it feels to smile. Where does your body light up when you smile When I smile, it makes me want to take a deep breath, and I notice my shoulders and belly relaxing. When I embody caring and loving, it feels great!
Sadly, a majority of us are unaware of joy, or doubtful about it. Maybe you are afraid to open up to joy, or maybe you are so unfamiliar with what joy feels like that you ignore or resist it when it comes knocking. No one, other than you, owns your happiness, but you might unknowingly block feelings or experiences that help you embody joy. The fact is that when you can’t embody joy, you miss out on one of life’s essential vitamins.
Want more joy Don’t be afraid to look silly. Silliness helps us take things less personally. It helps us see the world the way a kid does. When we can find more joy in the smalls of everyday life, we can embody happiness, rather than just pursuing it.
How is the topic of joy introduced at the beginning of the passage
A. By highlighting a joyful experience.
B. By stressing the importance of laughing.
C. By presenting an ultimate form of satisfaction.
D. By sharing the author’s understanding of joy.
What might be the author’s advice on finding joy
A. Taking a deep breath. B. Smiling to your friends.
C. Reflecting on nothingness. D. Doing small acts of kindness.
What might be the reason for many of us missing out on joy
A. That many of us refuse it on purpose.
B. That many of us are insensitive to joy.
C. That many of us lack life’s essential vitamins.
D. That many of us are likely to take joy for granted.
What is the best title of the text
A. Life is the creation of joy. B. A happy man always laughs last.
C. People are always unaware of joy. D. Happy people are happy in childhood.

Sam’s childish desires took hold of him. He envied his best friend Tom over his new bicycle. One day, Sam gathered the courage to beg his parents to buy a bicycle, but they refused him. Instead, his dad, Peter, advised him to get the bike by saving up for it. Without a second thought, Sam decided to set aside money from his pocket money every day to raise the amount he needed: $600. Every day, the little boy made sure he placed some money into his piggy bank.
After almost two years, the day finally arrived. “Finally!” Sam joyfully shouted as he dropped the piggy bank to the floor. Inside was $830! More than the $600 he was aiming for! Instantly, the excited boy asked his dad to take him to the bike store.
On their way to the store, Sam accompanied his dad to the supermarket to buy some groceries. They were lining up at the checkout when Sam noticed an old woman with a little girl in a wheelchair. The old lady dropped her groceries on the road. She looked helpless, and since she was holding the little girl’s wheelchair, she couldn’t pick them up.
Sam quickly approached the woman. “Hey let me help you. Where is your car ” he asked the woman whose name was Maggie. The woman told him that they lived across the street and didn’t have a car. “I’ll carry them for you,” Sam said. On the way, the woman’s granddaughter, Mary, told Sam their story. It turned out that she had her leg injured in a car crash and lost her parents in it. Maggie had to sell her car to pay for Mary’s surgery and wheelchair. Their story moved Sam.
After arriving at Maggie’s house, Sam made an unbelievable offer. “I’ll get you a car!” he shouted with joy. “Not a new one, though. My dad sells used cars and I’ll get you one!” Sam’s offer shocked Maggie. “But I don’t think I can afford a car now,” she said.

第二节 读后续写(25分)
“Don’t worry! My dad will help you get one. I promise!” Sam said firmly. The boy immediately rushed back to talk to his dad about it. “Well, it’s hard to buy a car if she has no money,” Peter said. Sam felt a surge of sorrow and regret flooding through him because he had promised Mary he would get her a car. Scratching his head, Sam tried to come up with a solution. Then a brilliant idea sprang to Sam’s mind. He thought maybe he could help her with a monthly payment plan. “But Sam, it won’t be easy for Mary.” Peter whispered. Without hesitation, Sam said with determination, “I can help her with my$830!”
Peter was surprised that Sam would offer to give all his savings to help Mary. “Are you sure ” Peter asked in confusion. “Yes! She needs a car more than I need a bike, Dad.” Sam responded. Peter was deeply touched by his son’s kindness and agreed. Soon, he helped Mary get a used car. Sensing Mary’s happiness, Sam was seized by a sense of pride with his lips curing into a smile. He didn’t complain about the things he didn’t have. Instead, he felt grateful for the health and love he was blessed with. It dawned on him that the goodness around him was priceless and that money was nothing compared to it.
