Unit 5 What are the shirts made of?
一、 阅读理解。
A(2023·白城市大安市期末)
人与自我——生活与学习
A six-year-old kid walked into a candy store with his dad and was
surprised by so many candies on sale. “It’s amazing. What should I
choose?” he asked himself.

“Come on, we don’t have much time. I have to attend an important
meeting,” his dad said. “These are all my favorites and I don’t know
what to choose.” He picked up some bags and then put them back. He
couldn’t make up his mind. “Hurry up. We have no time,” his dad said.
So the boy ran around the store quickly again. His eyes moved from one bag
to another, but all of the sweets looked so good and he hesitated, unsure
of what to buy. Finally, the dad lost his patience. He caught his son by the
hand and they walked out of the store, empty-handed. The boy cried. He
wanted them all, but ended up with nothing.

Some of us are like that boy. The world is like that candy store. We have
many choices available to us, but if we don’t make decisions about our
jobs, education, relationships, or other important things, we will end
up empty-handed. Sometimes we worry about making the wrong choice. If
we regret the direction that we take, is it too late to go back? We don’t
have to worry about this. The bigger danger is that we make no decision at all
and end up going nowhere and doing nothing.

( B )1. Why couldn’t the boy make up his mind?
A. Because he didn’t know what he liked.
B. Because all the candies were his favorites.
C. Because none of the candies looked perfect.

It is well-known that silk was discovered in China. It is wonderfully
strong, light and soft. As one of the best materials for clothes, silk has a
perfect look and the feel that no other materials can match.

There is a story about how silk was discovered. Lei Zu, the wife of
Huang Di, was having tea under a mulberry tree when a silkworm cocoon
(蚕茧) fell into her cup. As she tried to take the cocoon out, it started to
unwind(展开) and the “line” seemed endless. She realized that the
strong line could be used to make clothes. Then Lei Zu taught her people how
to raise silkworms and how to get silk. In this way, the silk industry was
born.

For hundreds of years after that, silk was only used by rich people. It
was a symbol of the identity(身份) and status(地位). With the
development of the silk industry, more silk was produced. It was no longer
just for rich people. In the Han Dynasty, silk was transported as far away as
Spain, Rome and many other countries. The trade road was famously
known as the Silk Road, which connected China with the rest of the world.
Today, silk can be used for many kinds of things, not just for
clothes, but also for paintings, writing brushes, kites and even fishing
nets. Wherever silk goes around the world, it is always warmly received.

六、 阅读理解。
人与社会——历史、社会与文化
“Made in China” is having its moment now—and it’s a fashionable
one.
The story of Chinese fashion began when two Chinese sports shoe
brands suddenly got international attention. Their products were seen all over
the world. One Chinese sportswear brand was at the New York Fashion Week
in 2018. It showed their new designs—sweaters and jackets with Chinese
characters.

A managing director of China Market Research Group said the latest
Chinese brands no longer caught customers’ eye by low prices.
Maybe it is because China’s young people are now more confident about
their own culture. They don’t show immediate interest in Western culture
anymore.

“Today’s young people in China are crazy about Chinese cultural
elements,” Jin Qu, a manager of a clothing shopping website, said.
“They like these elements printed on their clothes, even the brand picture
which was once seen as out of fashion. But now young people are proud of
these Chinese symbols.”
In fact, many stars in the West are now interested in Chinese cultural
elements in fashion. A foreign singer, for example, wore a Chinese dress
to the 2015 Met Gala in New York. The dress was designed and made by a
Chinese designer.

“We have to move from making to creating,” Aric Chen, a
designer, once said. “We want to replace the words ‘Made in China’ with
‘Designed in China’.”

人与自我——生活与学习
Amy was a pupil in Grade Three. She had no friends at school because
she had cerebral palsy(脑瘫). That always made her feel lonely.

One evening, knowing that things were not going well at school,
Amy’s mother wanted to cheer her up. “There’s a Christmas wish
competition at the local radio station,” she said. “Write a letter to Santa
Claus and you might win a prize. Why not have a try?” Amy’s eyes shone
bright.
At the radio station, letters poured in for the Christmas wish
competition. Lee Tobin, the manager, read Amy’s letter carefully.

Dear Santa Claus,
My name is Amy. I am 9. I have a problem at school. Can you help me,
Santa? Kids seldom play with me because of the way I walk and run and
talk. I hate cerebral palsy. And my Christmas wish is one day with many
friends.
Amy

Lee’s heart hurt when he read the letter. So he called up the local
newspaper. He thought it would be good for the whole city to hear about this
special little girl and her wish. Soon people knew Amy’s story by reading
newspapers. Every day Amy got letters filled with holiday greetings and
words of encouragement. Teachers and students talked together about how
loneliness can make others feel. Now Amy is active and outgoing because she
has many friends. By daring to make such a simple wish, Amy got what she
