二、 (2023·海安市实验中学期中)阅读理解。(本题共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
I saved the grain(谷物) carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away. Then when my crop bore its fruit, the birds found it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot(射击) at them but as soon as I walked away, they came back. At last, I killed some birds and hung them around the crop, hoping they would make the birds afraid and fly away, which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat.

With my new grain to store, I found a new problem. I needed something new to store the fine grain because it ran through my baskets easily. Finally, it took me nearly two months to dry two ugly pots(容器)—one for rice and one for wheat.
Next I formed a clay oven(黏土烤炉) and made some other tools from the hard wood and cloth to bake(烘烤) bread. I made and baked bread in my oven. I spent the third year on the island in farming and baking.

Soon after that, I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore(探索) the island by sea.
I still decided to have a boat. So I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn it from a tree to a boat.
When it was time to set off, I realized I had made my boat too far from the nearest stream. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of work.

I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey.
—Taken from The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe

四、 (2022 ·南京外国语学校期中)任务型阅读。(本题共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
Over the last few centuries, there have been many changes in our lives.

To start with, people were not able to travel such a long distance in such a short time in the past. Planes were not very popular at that time because they used to be a very expensive way to travel. Nowadays, we have fast, comfortable cars, and more and more people can travel by plane.
Secondly, in the past, people had to work much harder because they did not have the tools that we have today. Today, most of the difficult and dangerous work is done by computers and machines.

Thirdly, in the past, the living conditions were not as good as they are now. There were no bathrooms or running water in many houses, and people could not buy lots of things like fridges, TV sets or washing machines. Now, most families have several of these things.
Finally, nowadays, more and more people have the chance to get a good education. In the past, there were fewer schools and the quality of education was much poorer. Also, it is much easier to find the educational materials that you need on the Internet now.
The scientific and technological development in the world is amazing. Life now is much faster and busier than it used to be. And we are still creating new things to make our lives better and easier.

Victor’s project
As part of my history project on transport, I did some short interviews with people in my neighbourhood. My first interview was with my friend Susan’s grandmother, Mrs Sanderson.

Question 1
How did you get to school when you were young?
I walked to school with my friends, except for Fridays when we had to carry all of our things for school sports. Then we caught the bus. I enjoyed walking because we could chat on the way. I didn’t like it when it was raining, but Mum always made sure I wore my raincoat and gumboots. On the other hand, I became a strong walker, and I believe that’s why I’ve been healthy all my life.

Question 2
My parents drive me to school. Why didn’t you go to school by car?
You know, we were not rich enough at that time. We could not afford a car until I had finished school.

Question 3
How did you get around when you weren’t going to school?
We often went for a family trip by train. Most weekends we went on picnics and I loved playing with my cousins in the park. The trip took much longer than it would take by car today of course.
Question 4
How do you get around now?
I still love walking, but I need to drive my grandchildren around, so I mainly use my car. It is fast.

五、 (2023·南京市竹山中学模拟)完形填空。
High-speed railways have greatly changed people’s lives in recent years. More and more Chinese people would like to travel from one city to 1 by high-speed train. Many young people even choose to live a “twin life”—living in a quiet city 2 working in a busy and modern city.

“I had my first chance to take the high-speed train last week when I had a business meeting in Beijing,” John said. As somebody who disliked public transport all the time in the US, John was 3 about his travelling experience at first. But later he was really amazed at China’s high-speed trains after 4 in Beijing.
“Trains in China are clean and the seats are very huge. I can’t even 5 how fast the train is moving,” John told us. If there were no windows, most people wouldn’t be able to tell when we 6 or when we were travelling at about 300 km/h. Yes, it is so smooth. Even a coin can keep its balance on the train. 7 , you can enjoy nice food and drinks on the train. Compared with

other kinds of public transport, the high-speed train means the least noise and 8 . So, besides providing fast and enjoyable service for people, it can also protect the environment. Maybe this is the reason why the Chinese government has 9 building its railways all the time. It is reported that a new type of “flying train”, which can run at about 4,000 km/h, is on the way. If the train is completed, with its 10 four times higher than that of a plane, it will change the whole world’s travel mode.
Just imagine one picture: you close your eyes as soon as you get on the train. After taking a short rest and waking up, congratulate: welcome to China!

The Yangtze River, about 6,300 kilometres long, is the longest river in Asia. It provides a lifeline for hundreds of millions of people. It covers about 1.8 million square kilometres, about a fifth of the country’s total area. The river also provides a third of our country’s fresh water resources. Along with the Yellow River, it is considered as China’s “mother river”.
However, in recent years, this “mother river” has met some environmental problems. It is seriously polluted and the number of the fish is getting smaller. To solve these problems, the government passed the Yangtze River Protection

Law. The law came into force on March 1, 2021. There are nine parts in the law, covering areas such as resource protection, anti-pollution measures, green development and legal responsibilities. More importantly, the law has introduced a ten-year fishing ban(禁令) on the Yangtze River’s natural waterways. According to the law, both the central government and local organizations would put the river protection into their economic (经济的) and social development plans.
Around 231,000 fishermen had given up their fishing rights along the

Yangtze River. Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng said that more support should be given to these people to help them find new jobs. He also called for stronger efforts to help prevent activities which are not allowed by the law and encouraged the public to support the ban.

四、 (2023·扬州宝应县期中)阅读理解。
In September 2021, a group of five children in the Eixample area of Barcelona, Spain, started a “bike bus” programme. They began riding their bikes to school with their parents on Friday.
The bike bus begins around 8:25 every Friday morning and lasts for about 25 minutes. The path it will follow is always posted online ahead of time, so everyone knows where to join the children. The group usually has hundreds of riders. There are several schools along the path. When students

reach their school, they leave the “bus” and park their bikes. Instead of only riding in bike lanes(车道), the bike bus takes over the whole street. With music playing and bike bells ringing, the bike bus seems like a party. Being able to ride with a group of kids is a big part of the fun. Maria Pitarch says, “The best part of the programme is that we ride along and pick up our friends and we ride together.”

It was possible to ride to school in Eixample before, but it wasn’t really safe for kids. There were a few bike lanes, but there were also lots of cars. One of the main roads used by the programme has about 20,000 cars and motorbikes every day. Because these are busy streets, the local police are helping them by riding in front of the group and behind it.
The programme is supported by many parents. They say the programme can help change ideas about how people can get around in the city. They also say that the programme helps cut down on pollution.

四、 (2023·徐州第三十五中学模拟)阅读理解。
My grandfather is eighty years old. He always complains about how fast things have changed, and he often says that life used to be better.
Families aren’t what they used to be. If the husband and wife have problems with their marriage, they no longer stay together. And mothers used to stay at home and take care of their children, but now everyone is busy working. Parents have less time to look after children at home.

And the cars! More and more people drive now. People used to walk five miles to school on schooldays, even in winter. But now students don’t walk. And in the school, children don’t have to think any more. In Maths class, for example, students used to add, subtract, multiply and divide(加减乘除) by using their brains. But now kids don’t use their brains any more. Instead, they use calculators(计算器).

Most families have computers and there are lights at home now. In the past people didn’t have computers. And people didn’t even have lights. Mothers used to spend all day cooking in the kitchen. But now people don’t often eat home-cooked food.
And people talk less to each other than before. They are too busy to talk, too busy to eat, too busy to think ...
Life used to be simple, but it isn’t simple any more.
