During work hours in Bach’s Bakery, the kitchen is especially quiet except the sound of the machine. The quiet environment is not the result of the strict rules, but because all the workers are deaf. They use sign language to communicate with each other from time to time.
Bach’s Bakery is in Changsha City, Hunan Province. It sells many kinds of German bread, cakes and coffee. It is very popular for the story of Uwe Brutzer who opened it.

Over twenty years ago, Uwe Brutzer and his wife heard about a Chinese public project. It provided language training for the disabled children, but it was short of trainers in Changsha. So they came in 2002 with a common wish to do something meaningful in life.
In Changsha, together with other Chinese trainers, they helped children improve their language pronunciation. The progress each child experienced was a great encouragement to them, and they achieved their goal in life.

After about ten years of working for this project, they found that the disabled adults couldn’t be independent because they had no professional skills. Then Uwe Brutzer and his wife set up a bread shop to teach these people how to make bread. With their help, all of them were able to live on their own.
Luckily, Uwe Brutzer and his wife have also got the support from the local government. More people join them and understand that disabled people can work as well as others when they have the same chances.

四、 (2023·南充)阅读理解。
It is more than sixty years since the death of Lei Feng, and yet his spirit of selflessness is still alive, inspiring Chinese young people. In fact, the wish to help others can always be found among common people.

On September 5, 2022, when an earthquake hit Luding, Sichuan, the 28-year-old hydropower station(水电站) worker Gan Yu chose not to leave but stay at his workplace, saving villages downstream from being flooded. People think he is a hero like Lei Feng, but he doesn’t feel that he should be compared to the young hero. “Lei Feng is a role model to all Chinese young people. The things he did may seem small, but behind them was nobility(高贵的品质) that we can all achieve,” he said.

Zeng Qiangfei, 24, is also from Sichuan. In 2013, when an earthquake happened in his hometown, he was studying in a middle school. Zeng remembered seeing rescuers(救援者) and volunteers gather there to help. When he grew up, he became a volunteer himself. After a terrible quake hit Türkiye and Syria in 2023, he flew there to help. During the rescue, he always saw local people bowing quietly to rescuers like them. “I grew up listening to Lei Feng’s stories. He is an excellent young man who spared no effort to help others,” said Zeng.

This view is shared by a 56-year-old British man named James Elroy Edginton, who lives in Hunan, the hometown of Lei Feng. Working at a local college, Edginton volunteers to help students from poor families and is warmly regarded as a “foreign Lei Feng”. “I am honored to be connected with the spirit of Lei Feng. Emily Bhatnagar has always loved reading. “Growing up, I was really shy, so I always turned to books,” she says. In 2019, Bhatnagar was in high school when her dad was diagnosed(诊断) with cancer. Books became an even bigger comfort. And she started thinking about families in similar(相似的) situations.

二、 (2023·海安市海陵中学模拟)阅读理解。(本题共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
Joey was happy because he had many special friends—four squirrels(松鼠), two rabbits and many colourful birds. At the mealtime, these wild animals came near to the family and they would feed these special friends.

In the large yard stood thirteen trees of different sizes. One day, while Joey was playing with his sister under the trees, he noticed that a tree trunk(树干) had a sad look. He ran into the house to tell his mum about it. She told Joey to find the reason why it was sad. So Joey went into the yard, ran to the sad tree and asked, “Why are you unhappy?” “I am the smallest tree around. The birds don’t fly to me. The rabbits don’t eat grass under me. The squirrels don’t climb to my top. Nobody needs me or loves me,” replied the sad tree.

After knowing the reason, the family had a meeting. Joey suggested making seats under the sad tree. Joey’s father said he could help make some seats around the tree. The family would sit under the tree and the tree wouldn’t feel sad anymore. When Joey told his special friends the tree was sad, they decided to do what they could to help make the sad tree happy again.

Early the next morning, when Joey woke up, he noticed birds singing happily in the little tree and saw squirrels climbing up and down in it. Rabbits were eating the fresh grass around the tree. The little tree was happy again.
Joey ran inside to tell the good news to his family. Joey’s mother and father went into the yard and saw the happy tree. “Let’s start to build the seats around the tree. I will need help to build them. Get the nails(钉子) for me, Joey,” said the father. “I can help you hold the nails, Dad,” said Joey’s sister.

四、 任务型阅读。(本题共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
Understanding graphics(图表)
When we are reading, we often see one or two graphics in a text. Have you ever thought about these questions: Why are they there? What information do they give? Do they help with our reading and understanding?

Graphics are things like pictures, maps, charts and tables. They give information to readers. Very often, we can see different kinds of graphics in books, magazines and newspapers. Writers use graphics to attract(吸引) the readers and give them some special information. Graphics help readers to understand the given information in a text. And graphics put the information in an order so that it’s easy to understand when we take a quick look.

It is not always true that a picture means more than a thousand words. But many things are easier to be shown than to be told and they may also be easier to be understood. Graphics are just the right things that give a lot of information but don’t take readers much time to read and understand.
The right way to read and understand a graphic is to look at the picture and the words together. In a graphic, only a few words are used to explain what the picture shows you. Sometimes, numbers and percentages(百分比) are also given to go well with the words to explain things.
