Last summer, my friends and I noticed how messy our neighbourhood park was. We wanted it to be different. We worked without parents and teachers to clean up the park. We had a great time making the park even better than before, and now the whole neighbourhood is able to share and enjoy it again.

Maybe cleaning up a park isn’t your choice, though. No problem! You can turn anything that matters to you into a volunteer project. Do you like playing chess, reading or spending time with your pet? You can volunteer to do what you love to do. For example, you can help at an old people’s centre, simply by talking or playing games with the old to make their days better. If you’re good at Maths or English, you can volunteer to be a homework helper at your school. You’re always needed to walk dogs or play with cats. Or you can collect things for homeless people, such as soap and toothbrushes.
You can see that there is something for everyone. Whatever you do as a volunteer, your time will be enjoyed. Kids everywhere are making a difference by volunteering. You can do that too!

A week later, we started to receive military training(军训). We needed to gather at 6:30 a.m. every day. However, I was still in bed at 6:00 on the first day. Over the next three years, we continued to help each other, but we almost never said “thank you”. For many years, I didn’t think it was necessary to say “thank you” out loud. I also felt embarrassed(尴尬的) after I had been thanked for offering someone just a little bit of help.

My attitude towards saying thanks didn’t change until I helped a group of kids. It was a tiring walk when I was on my way home after a day’s class. Some little kids threw the ball onto the tree by accident while playing it. They asked me for help, so I did. Then those kids said “thank you” one by one with big smiles on their faces when I handed the ball to them. I was surprised, but it really made me feel warm at that moment. I realized the importance of expressing thanks from then on.
Showing thanks is a polite way for a conversation. It will let the other side know that you’re thankful for his or her action. So next time, when you feel thankful, express your thanks bravely.

The Comic Relief charity, an organization that helps people in need, uses laughter to raise money. Every two years in spring, many English people put on a red nose, make a fool of themselves and do “silly” things to make themselves and others laugh.
Examples of “silly” things you can do are:
Invite friends round to your house to watch funny films. They have to pay to watch the films, those with the most comfortable chairs paying more, and for food and drinks.

Finally, you finish all your schoolwork and sit back in your chair. Suddenly you feel a headache and realize your eyes are painful. What’s going on? THE 20—20—20 RULE This gives your eyes a break from long screen time. It suggests looking at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds after 20 minutes of work on the screen. You can then continue working without any pain. ·Studies show that people blink(眨眼睛) less often when looking at a screen. Keep your eyes wet by blinking often or using eye drops.
· Sit up straight about an arm’s length(长度) away from the screen. Make sure you’re looking down at your screen. Stand up and exercise often to avoid neck and shoulder pain.
·What about blue-light-blocking glasses(防蓝光眼镜)?
They may look cool, but research shows that blue light isn’t the biggest cause of eye tiredness. So ask doctors about computer glasses before putting them on.
