“Jesse,” said Mother, “Run to the grocer and buy ten eggs. We’ve run out of them. Here is the money. Be careful that you don’t stumble(绊倒) and drop the eggs.
“I will!”Jesse gave Mother his word before running off to the grocer.
Jesse had bought the eggs and was on his way home. He met a neighbor, Mrs. Gopal, who was jogging(慢跑) with her dog in his direction. Seeing how narrow the pavement(人行道) was, Jesse got off the pavement to let them pass. Just then, he watched the dog running hard to keep up with Mrs Gopal’s pace(步伐) and was very funny. After they passed, Jesse thought he would just turn around to take one last glance(一瞥) at them. Unluckily, his foot tripped(绊倒) against the pavement. He fell down and eggs dropped onto the ground.
Jesse scrambled to his feet(爬起来) and looked at the mess of smashed(破碎的) eggshells and the gooey(黏糊的) egg white on the ground. He cried at the thought of breaking his promise.
Mrs Gopal must have heard Jesse’s whimpers(抽泣). She turned around and hurried over to him. “Don’t cry, little boy. Just tell your mother that my dog had jumped on you and knocked the eggs out of your hand. You will not be punished.”
Jesse gazed at the adult in surprise. “Tell my mother a lie ” he questioned, “No, I would rather be scolded(责备) a hundred times than do so.” Mrs Gopal’s eyes widened and her face turned red.
“Come. Let me buy you some eggs in return for the valuable lesson you have taught me.” she said as she offered Jesse her hand.
