辨析: common, usual, general 与ordinary
1).common 表示“时时发生;人所共有”,并且含有“并不高贵;地位低下”之意。
Rabbits and foxes are common in Britain.
兔子和狐狸在英国很常见。
2). usual 常用来指由于长时间没有变化而形成了一种习惯或制度,译为“通常的;惯常的”。
We will meet at the usual place.
我们将在老地方见面。
3). general 表示在大多数人或物中流行并受到关注,不含 “地位低下”之意,此外,general还有“总体的;概括的”之意。

这种药经过多长时间能够被普遍使用4). ordinary 表示“随便可以碰到;不值得惊奇”之意味,与common 基本同意。

3. I developed very slowly and it took nearly two hundred years before I was built as an analytical machine by Charles Babbage.

该句使用了“It took+一段时间+before+从句(一般过去时)”句型,表示“过了一段时间后才……”。该句型中主句谓语动词多使用be动词。It will (not) be+时间段+before+从句(现在时)

很长一段时间后我才理解他所做的事情。Before I understood 以上句型中若主句为将来时态,从句则用一般现在时态;若主句是一般过去时态或过去完成时态,则从句用一般过去时态。
 4. As time went by, I was made smaller.
随着时间的流逝,我被做的越来越小了。
1).as在句中作连词, 引导时间状语从句,意思是“随着;当……时”。
As she grew older she gained in confidence.
随着年龄的增长,她的信心增强了。as 用作连词,还可以引导下列从句:
(1). 方式状语从句
They did as I had askd. 他们照我说的做了。
(2). 原因状语从句
As you were out, I left a massage.
你不在,我留了张纸条。
(3). 让步状语从句
Happy as they were, there was something missing.
尽管他们很快乐;但总缺少点什么。
(4). 定语从句
As you know, Mary is leaving soon.
你是知道的,玛丽马上要离开了。
2). go by (时光)逝去;依照;依赖;根据……做判断。
Don’t go by that old map.
别按照那张旧地图。
You can’t go by what he says.
你不能拿他的话作标准。

(2)such. . . that. . . 句型的基本结构:
such + a/an + adj. + 单数可数名词+that. . .
such + adj. + 复数可数名词/不可数名词+that. . .①The teacher was telling us so interesting a story that we all forgot the time.
