Thailand's four train journeys
If you're not in a rush, you can take trains to travel around Thailand. Here are the four best train journeys in the country.
Mahachai Line
Start: Thonburi; End: Samut Songkhram
Start at Thonburi's Wongwian Yai train station, just across the Chao Phraya River from Bangkok. From the window, you can see homes, temples, shops, palm trees and rice fields. The farmland disappears as you enter Samut Sakhon. After getting off and walking through a busy fresh market, you'll reach a harbor(港口).
Death Railway
Start: Thonburi; End: Nam Tok
Built in the 1940s, the Death Railway is Thailand's most famous and historic train line. A total of688 bridges were built along the route(路线). The trains that run the Death Railway are 3rd-class,meaning they have no air-conditioners and mostly wooden benches. It's a tourist line, so there're stops for short visits to historical sites and a cave.
Beach Train
Start:Bangkok; End:Hua Hin
This route skirts around the Gulf of Thailand. Your destination, Hua Hin, is Thailand's original beach resort(旅游胜地). The central attraction of the route is Hua Hin's red-and-white train station, which was built in 1926. The train is largely responsible for Hua Hin's wealth; therefore, the station is a major source of pride.
Train to Laos
Start:Bangkok; End: Thanaleng
Starting from Bangkok in the afternoon, this route crosses the Mekong River into Laos. In the morning, with warm sunlight streaming into your bed, you'll pass by the tiny villages and seemingly endless rice fields. After a stop in Nong Khai, you'll cross the so-called Friendship Bridge to Laos.

A group of foreigners visited Weihai, a coastal city, to explore what the rising star in China's tourism market can offer.
Driven by social media and short video platforms, Weihai's tourism industry saw a huge growth, with the city of just 2.92 million residents welcoming over 59 million visits.
Their first stop is the Dongchu Island in Rongcheng, a county-level city in Weihai, where the scenery is characterized by the region's unique seaweed-roofed houses. “I've never seen a roof made of seaweed. I can't believe my eyes at the houses,” said Nick I’ve, a British editor.
The group then visited the Sanggou Bay Marine Ranch(海洋牧场), a hot family-friendly tourist destination to experience marine farming. “Visiting Sanggou Bay Marine Ranch was a pleasant experience because I could see and experience firsthand how the sea fishes are kept,” said Desca LydiaNatalia, a journalist with Antara, Indonesia's national news agency. “This experience not only increased my understanding but also provided enjoyment, as I could directly eat clams(蛤蜊) freshly harvested from the sea. I even had the opportunity to feed the seagulls.”
Sanggou Bay Marine Ranch receives about 80,000 visitors every year since it was established in2015. Visiting the marine ranch has become one of the must-dos in Weihai.
Desca said that her favorite experience was living in a homestay in Weihai. “While staying in a hotel is comfortable, a homestay offers a different experience, especially since the yard is large and full of flowers, making it feel like home. So I chose a homestay,” said the Indonesian journalist. The homestay Decca chose is just a stone's throw away from the beach. Desca said that her country is a maritime country and also has many homestays. “So when I stayed in the homestay, the atmosphere reminded me of Indonesia,” she added.

Blonde chocolate is not as popular as milk, dark, and white chocolate, but it has already been known as one of the most wonderful variations(变种) of white chocolate ever created.
The history of blonde chocolate can date back to the year 2004 when French chef Frederic Bau was busy showing off his skills during an exhibition in Japan. He was so absorbed in his show that he left his white chocolate melting in a bain-marie(蒸锅) for four days. When he finally got back to it, the chocolate had become pale brown and had a very special smell and taste. Frederic quickly came to realize the potential of his discovery, and blonde chocolate was born.
He knew he was on his way to something when he tasted blonde chocolate for the first time. However, because the treat was technically the result of an accident, there was no way to produce the result again, at least not immediately. The French chef spent the next seven years experimenting and perfecting the process, to make sure that he produced the best blonde chocolate every time.
Since 2012, blonde chocolate has been sold by French chocolater Vlrhona under the name Dulcey, but even though it has made quite an impression on the experts in the years since, blonde chocolate is still not a mainstream(主流的) dessert. That is mainly because French lawmakers refuse to recognize the sweet treat as a fourth type of chocolate. Instead, they recognize it a variation of white chocolate.
Blonde chocolate shares a similar story with another unique dessert, Ruby chocolate, the naturally pink chocolate made with Ruby cocoa beans. In 2017, it was called “the biggest innovation in chocolate in 80 years”. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the future of blonde chocolate.
28. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A. The origin of blonde chocolate. B. The design of blonde chocolate.
C. The importance of blonde chocolate. D. The process of making blonde chocolate.
29. Why do people seldom choose blonde chocolate as a mainstream dessert
A. It is refused by most of French experts.
B. It is not as delicious as other sweet treat.
C. It is not warmly welcomed by young people.
D. It is recognized as a variation of white chocolate.
30. Why does the author mention Ruby chocolate in the last paragraph
A. To present the misfortune of Ruby chocolate.
B. To doubt a growing concern about chocolate.
C. To show a promising future of blonde chocolate.
D. To criticize public attitude towards blonde chocolate.
31. What might be a suitable title for the text
A. People's Thoughts towards Blonde Chocolate
B. Blonde Chocolate, Another Type of Sweet Dessert
C. The Uncommon Development of Blonde Chocolate
D. Blonde Chocolate, a Delicious Treat Created by Mistake

A private company is working with the American space agency NASA to develop a new rocket that could greatly reduce space travel times. The engine for such a rocket will be designed to sharply increase the amount of force to speed up space travel and improve rocket efficiency.
The new design, called Pulsed Plasma Rocket ( PPR), is being developed by Arizona-based company Howe Industries. The company is currently in the early stages of studying the technology before building working engine models.
In a recent statement, Howe Industries said such rocket technology will be needed to shore up NASA's plans to send humans to the moon and after that, possibly Mars. The space agency has also set a goal to build a long-term base in space. But one barrier to all these plans is the long travel times necessary with current spacecraft systems. For example, a trip to Mars with existing spacecraft would take at least 200 days each way. Developers of the proposed Pulsed Plasma Rocket have said it could reduce travel time to the Red Planet to about two months each way.
Howe Industries said its new design gives the rocket the ability to reach extremely high speeds to complete“ reasonable” space travel times. NASA has described its Space Launch System(SLS) as the most powerful ever built. The agency has said the SLS rocket system is expected to provide nearly 53 N of force during space travel. Developers of PPR say that in addition to a huge increase in force, the new design will provide a “specific impulse(推力)”rate of 5,000. The higher this rate is, the more efficient the rocket system will be.
The team said if chosen by NASA to continue with Phase(阶段) Ⅱ, it will be centered on improving the performance of the proposed engine, as well as carrying out experiments on major engine systems. The last phase will involve completing a spaceship design for carrying humans to Mars.
32. What is the new rocket for
A. Loading heavy items.
B. Promoting space tourism.
C. Shortening the traveling time to space.
D. Providing energy for a long-term space base.
33. What does the underlined phrase “shore up” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Support. B. Reject. C. Reflect. D. Claim.
34. Why are the figures mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To tell the rocket's unique structure.
B. To prove the rocket's potential power.
C. To uncover the rocket's possible risks.
D. To show the rocket's tough development.
35. What does the last paragraph suggest
A. The engine entered the second phase.
B. The engine met the requirement of NASA.
C. The team planned the rocket's further improvement.
D. The team are worried about the future of the rocket.

Then it was time for me to fill out the application. Mom accompanied me in the family room and saw the process. I had to prove that I had all the characteristics required in a candidate(候选人):scholarship, leadership, service, character, and so on. The next day, I turned in the paperwork to the advisor(顾问) and didn't think any more about it.
Months went by, I received a letter from the school about the Honor Society. I opened it and surprisingly, it just told me I failed. I felt shocked and disappointed. As soon as the bus let me off that afternoon, I dragged myself into the house. My mother was typing at the computer. “Mom,” I said sadly, “I didn't make the Honor Society.” She smiled and held up her hand to give me a high five. “You are joking.” Suddenly, I felt tears come from my eyes. “No, really, they didn't pick me,” I said and handed her the letter.
“There must be some mistakes. Don't worry and I'll help you contact the advisor.” She grabbed the phone and dialed the Honor Society advisor. “Oh, honey, I'm sorry. I thought you were kidding,” my mother said. However, from the phone, she was told no mistake was made, and the decisions were final.

Text 10
Hello, everybody. Today, I'd like to talk about running. We all know that it's free, and requires no equipment and the scenery on the road can be attractive—it's no wonder that running is among the world's most popular sports. The number of runners in Australia has doubled from 2006 to 2014. Now more than 1.35 million Australians run for fun and exercise. Research has found running helps to reduce the risk of being overweight, heart disease and cancer. However, you don't have to run fast or far to get the benefits. We found that running just for about 50 minutes a week is OK. This is good news for those who don't have much time for exercise. But it shouldn't disappoint those who enjoy running longer and more often. We found that running every two days or four hours a week is also good to health. But running too fast is not necessarily better. We found the best benefits for running at any speed between 8 and 13 km/h. It might be that running at your own “most comfortable speed” is the best for your health.

One possible version:
The Best Choice I Have Made
When it comes to the best choice that I have made, a running race comes into my mind. I still remember how I felt breathless and my legs were worn out on the half way of the race. I was about to give up when I heard my friends cheering me on. Eventually, I chose to continue running. It turned out that it was the best choice that I've made. Not only did I make it to the finish line but also I realize that only with persistence will I achieve success. Thanks to the choice, my willpower has been strengthened and I'm convinced I can overcome whatever life throws at me.
One possible version:
My mother shared a story of her friend who had the same experience. The story was about a high school friend of hers. He was intelligent and had a good heart, but for some reason he wasn't chosen for the National Junior Honor Society. But many years later, he became a world specialist who treated lung cancer and he saved lives every day. After the story, my mother told me not being a member of the honor society wasn't going to ruin my future. Touched by the story and her words, I felt relieved suddenly.
I smiled and made up my mind to make a change. After all, what was more important was that a bright future was likely to await me. It was time to let go of the painful experience. I made up my mind to devote myself to studying hard as well as improving myself. Everything seemed smooth gradually. I became the best student to graduate from the middle school and be admitted to my dream university. Looking back on the experience, I found the lesson that my mother taught me occurred to my mind again.
