Graham Moore is the best-selling author of The Sherlockian and the screenwriter of TheImitation Game. His new book The Last Days of Night is out now. He is talking about some of his favorite books.
Murder in Three Acts
BYAGATHA CHRISTIE
My mother is a crime fiction lover and when I was having trouble learning to read, we'd sit in my bed at home in Chicago and take it in turns to read a paragraph. It was the first book I read cover-to-cover and I later became a writer because of that experience. Not only did it give me a love of crime fiction but, more importantly, it taught me that reading can be a shared experience.
BY NEAL STEPHENSON
This book showed me that historical fiction need not be dry, but can be lively and enjoyable. Stephenson asks readers to take science seriously, but writes the story in a funny way. I'd long known of Alan Turing, but Stephenson's technique(手法) of describing him was surprising; I saw how a writer can bring a real person to life for modern readers.
A Visit from the Goon Squad
BY JENNIFER EGAN
Egan uses a technique that I drew on when writing The Imitation Game. She tells stories from different voices and times, and uses many styles that say to readers, “I've done a lot of work, but now you have to ion in and work it out for yourselves.”
With my latest book, my greatest hope is that readers will want to get other people discussing the book. I've just started the conversation.
21. What influenced Moore to be a writer
A. Reading crime fiction in secret. B. Writing stories at a young age.
C. Reading a book with his mother. D. Having trouble learning to read.
22. What does Moore think of
A. Boring. B. Serious.
C. Imaginative. D.. Humourous.
23. What does Egan hope readers will do
A. Tell their own stories. B. Think for themselves.
C. Write her some letters. D. Ask her some questions.
B
“Listen!”Mr. Lee said seriously at the beginning of his first class, “I will put a lie into each of my classes. Your job is to try and catch me in the Lie of the Day.”
That was really a clever way to fix our attention on the dry and boring subject —— geography. Then in the following weeks, we didn't let off every single word of what he was saying in class and challenged his lectures. When his class ended with nobody seeing through the lie, Mr. Lee would say, “Ah ha! Each of you has a lie in your notes. Discuss among yourselves what it might be, and I will tell you at the end of this term.”
Mr. Lee's special style of teaching worked. All of us reviewed and discussed about our notes actively.
One Monday at the end of the term, Mr. Lee listened carefully to what we were questioning for almost ten minutes. Then he finally said, “Do you still remember the first lesson how I said that every lecture has a lie ”
Confused, we said yes.
“Well, that was a real big lie. In fact, all the lectures I've given before are completely true. But I am glad you worked so hard. Move on.”
Hearing this, all eves in the classroom went wide
While my knowledge of geography has been forgotten over time, the lessons have stayed with me. “Experts” can be wrong and say things that sound right, so build a habit of evaluating new information and check it against things you already accept as a fact.
24. Which word can best describe Mr. Lee
A. wise B. serious C. boring D. confusing
25. Which of the statements is true
A. Mr. Lee always told lies.
B The students always questioned Mr. Lee.
C. Everyone had to write down all of Mr. Lee's words.
D It was difficult for the students to see through the lie.
26. What does the underlined sentence in the passage mean
A. The students opened their eyes.
B. Mr. Lee opened the students' eyes.
C. The students got shocked and amazed.
D. The students had a look at the classroom.
27. What's the best title of the passage
A .A Real Lie B. Learn to Question
C! A Special Teaching Style D. The First Geography Lesson
C
Not long ago, an airplane was flying over New Zealand. There was a television cameraman on board. Suddenly, out in the night sky, a bright sphere(球体) came into view. Everyone on board saw it and everyone thought, “UFO”——Unidentified Flying Object. The cameraman went into action and started filming. That week people all over the world saw the film of the mysterious light on their television screens. What was it Was it a spaceship full of visitors from another planet The captain of the airplane and the cameraman believed it was. Other observers had many different explanations. Some said it was Venus(金星). Others said it was just a trick of light.
An air traffic controller also saw it on his radar screen. He thought that a flock of birds was causing dots on his radar screen when the “UFO” appeared.
Most astronomers now believe that what these people saw was almost certainly the planet Venus. At that time of year it was very bright and easy to see. And from a moving air plane it can appear to be moving fast. So far there is no proof that UFOs or spaceships from other planets do exist. These years investigators of UFOs have investigated thousands of sightings or occasions when people said they saw a UFO. Ninety percent of these turned out to have a simple explanation.
However, it is a good idea to keep an open mind. Scientists in some countries are trying to persuade their governments to help them study UFOs. And they are planning to cooperate internationally on reporting and investigating sightings of UFOs.
After all, it is quite possible that there is life out there in the universe. And if something is alive, it is quite possible that it will come to visit us.
28. What can we know from the first paragraph

B. They saw the “UFO” in the daytime.

C. dots caused by a flock of birds
D. a visiting spaceship from another planet
30. Why do most astronomers now believe that what these people saw was almost certainly the planet Venus
A. Because they saw it with their own eyes.
B. Because it was moving very fast when they saw it.
C. Because they have proved UFOs or spaceships from Venus do exist.
D Because at the time when it was seen, Venus should be very bright and easy to see.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A The discussion about what on earth the UFO is.
B. Life in the universe will come to visit our earth.
C. The UFO——an Unidentified Flying Object was filmed by a cameraman.
D. Scientists studying the UFO are trying to ask the governments to offer help.
D
Sometimes having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, drink, wear strange hairdos and even fight. Basically, they are often taking risks.
Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong Not really. So what explains their risky behavior
According to Laurence Steinberg, a professor at Temple University, US, the reason is that teens care a lot about how their peers(同龄人) view them -that's the effect of “peer influence”, reported Science Daily. As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates and also become more sensitive to their feedback. This sensitivity drives teenagers to concentrate on the short-term benefits of making risky choices and overlook the costs.
In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they tended to drive more safely.
Why does pressure from peers have such a big influence on teens' behavior As Steinberg sees it, a teenager's brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a weak brake. The “accelerator”, the brain's ability to notice the benefits of things, is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake”, the brain part related to controlling impulses (冲动) and long-term thinking, is still immature. When teens are under the pressure of being judged by their peers, they tend to push hard on the accelerator. Given how weak the brake is, it is likely that they are going to end up in a crash.
But the good news here, according to Steinberg, is that a violent teenager doesn't necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it .“They get more self-controlled,” Steinberg told Live Science.
Also, people who haven't committed a violent crime by age 19 are less likely to start doing it later, added Steinberg.
32. The underlined word “irrational” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to .
A crazy B. quick C. careful D. independent
33. Why are teenagers likely to take risks according to the text
A. They are eager to challenge themselves.
B. They are too young to tell right from wrong.
C. Their brains are more sensitive to thrilling events.
D They care a lot about what their peers think of them.
34. According to the text, with peers around them, teenagers tend to .
A. use more self-control
B. focus more on short-term benefits
C. perform better than when they are alone
D. become more careful about what they do
35. What can we conclude from the text
A The majority of teenagers become less violent when they grow up.
B. Those who love taking risks are more likely to commit violent crimes.
C. Violent teenagers often grow to be adults who cannot control themselves well.
D. People who are over 19 years old are less likely to commit a crime than Teenagers.

Telling lies is usually seen as a misbehavior. 6 . Under certain circumstances, it is understandable that you tell untruth if you believe telling a lie is a better choice.
Sometimes, telling a lie serves certain purposes. A lie may end up encouraging you if you have been struggling for a long period of time to achieve something, . At that point, what you need to keep on is encouragement rather than truth that can make you give up altogether. Take English learning as an example, You may feel frustrated for not making any progress despite all your efforts. However, if someone tells you that your English is much better than before, you will regain your confidence. .
On some occasions, we have to tell white lies to protect our beloved ones from being struck by discouraging news. . It is wiser for you not to tell the truth that may shock the person and make his disease even worse. White lies can cushion the blow and protect the people from tough reality.
Still and all, long-term relationship between people is based on honesty and trust. 10 ,we might as well think twice and weigh the pro s and cons before telling a lie. Just like things are never one-sided, I don't think it is appropriate to judge whether we should never tell lies or we should tell lies. Instead, whether we should tell a lie depends on the situation, and we should judge these situations carefully.
A Therefore, telling lies can sometimes be beneficial
B. If you are an honest man and you deserve others' trust
C However, reality does not always encourage truth-telling
D. Although telling lies can be considered proper in certain situations
B especially when you don't see much progress of a task despite a great deal of effort
F. even when you have made much progress because you have put all your efforts into it
C. For example, imagine one of your family is dying and there's no way to prolong his life
