Change begins with you
Hello, everyone! I'm greatly honored to stand here to deliver a speech to enhance the awareness of protecting wild animals, whose topic is Change begins with you.
As we all know, animals play a part in keeping the balance of nature. Unfortunately, they are being over-hunted; their habitats are being damaged, so some of them are dying out. It’s time for us to take immediate measures to change the situation. We shouldn’t cut down trees without permission. Instead, we are supposed to plant more trees to protect the animals’ living conditions. At the same time, more nature reserves are expected to be set up.
Let's take the responsibility and do what we can to protect wild animals. Change begins with us and we will live in harmony with animals and life will become better.
That's all. Thank you for your listening.

He was in no mood for singing and found it difficult to focus on his work. He was too worried about the safety of his gold. When he was working, he couldn’t help running in and out again and again to see if his gold was all right. And he kept removing the bag from one place to another to keep it safe. What’s worse, he lay awake all night because he was always trying to count the gold. Worst of all, the children no longer came to see him.
At last the shoemaker felt so unhappy that he took his bag of gold and ran next door to the rich man. He handed the bag of gold to the rich man the moment he opened the door. “Please take back your gold,” he said. “The worry of it is making me upset all day and night, and I have lost all of my friends. I would rather be a poor shoemaker as I was before.” The rich man was amazed. Before he could say a word, the shoemaker had left. From then on, the shoemaker was happy again and sang all day long at his work.

W: I apologize for that. Our delivery person hasn’t returned from his route yet. Why don’t I deliver it to you instead It won’t take long.

W: Since as long as I can remember, I’ve had problems making friends. It’s not that I wanted to fit in. I just didn’t like the kind of things that other kids liked.
M: You mean music, hobbies, clothes …
W: Yeah. All that stuff just seemed meaningless to me. I didn’t want to hang out with the cool kids. I’m just not a cool kid and I don’t want to be.
M: And do you think it’s connected to your family background
W: Oh, definitely. My parents are really quiet and although there are four kids, we live in a quiet household. We read, we eat together, we’re very respectful of each other’s space and we’re just not into partying.
M: So do you see this as a problem at school — like when you’re trying to make friends
W: Um, a little bit. It’s not so much a problem — more a feeling that I’m just very different. Like when other teenagers are starting to go out, I’m happier staying in and studying. It’s more a question of looking for similar people, wanting friends who have the same interests. Friends like you, actually!
(Text 10)
W: Well, I’d love to share with you my musical tastes. I’ve always been a huge fan of music. My mom used to have so many CDs, tapes and records, so I could listen to all sorts of things, from classical music like Beethoven and Mozart to seventies bands like Shakatak.
I’ve always listened to electronic music and dance music. It started when I was about thirteen years old. I used to go to parties for young people with my schoolmates and I’ve just always been into them. One thing that I can’t get into is country. My sister is a big fan. I just cannot get used to it.
If I look on my iPod now, a lot of the music that I listen to now, I probably listened to back when I was four or five years old, with the exception of some of the dance tracks which came in when I was a teenager. So I’d like to say that I listen to a wide range of music, and I’ve got my mom to thank for that.丰城九中2023-2024学年下学期高一期末考试

Binge-watching (刷剧) is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in a row. With developments in the speed and connectivity of the Internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows stream (流播) directly to their television at their convenience.
This behavior is nothing new. In fact, binge-watching has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like” suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode.
However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back (一集接一集地), almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and 25% have neglected their household chores (家务活). Next we’ll be missing work!
Bingeing has other connections—binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said, “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist (抗拒) watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move.” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction
The countless number of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning, then it becomes a problem. So, what’s the answer Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, “A little of what you fancy does you good.”

You’ve heard that plastic is polluting the oceans—between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.
At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called “Strawpocalypse,” a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that’s part of Von Wong’s artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.
In a piece from 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate (说明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled “Truckload of Plastic,” Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped (倾倒) from a truck all at once.
Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.
32. What are Von Wong’s artworks intended for
A. Beautifying the city he lives in. B. Drawing public attention to plastic waste.
C. Introducing eco-friendly products. D. Reducing garbage on the beach.
33. Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3
A. To find a substitute for them. B. To explain why they are useful.
C. To voice his views on modern art. D. To show the difficulty of their recycling.
34. What effect would “Truckload of Plastic” have on viewers
A. Calming. B.Refreshing. C. Disturbing. D. Challenging.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Ocean Plastics Transformed into Sculptures
B. Media Interest in Contemporary Art
C. Responsibility Demanded of Big Companies

Is going alone in an unknown area the right way to go, or do you want a tour guide to show you the highlights I think that you can combine the two ways in one trip and have the best of both worlds. 36 The best purchase we made was for a bus tour that would take us around the capital and point out all the main sites. That allowed us the next day to travel on foot to the ones we especially wanted to see.
Let’s look at the San Francisco Bay Area which is another one of my favorite vacation spots. Some areas are so familiar to tourists that it’s possible to view the attractions on your own. 37 Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 are good examples. Just by walking a few blocks, you can tour Aquarium of the Bay and the Riptide Arcade on Pier 39.
38 If you go to Alcatraz Island, you have a choice of going alone, having a live tour guide or being guided by earphones. I would recommend the live tour guides. I went all three ways, and I received more enjoyment by someone telling me items of interest I know I had missed on previous tours. 39 It gives you a behind-the-scenes look of colorful Chinatown. The tour covers history, traditions of the local people and culture that you probably wouldn’t know or see by travelling alone.
You can go alone to attractions or take a guided tour. It’s your choice and you can choose whichever would give you the most memorable experience. 40
I recommend both.
B. It’s possible to drive to the area and go alone.
C. One trip we recently took was to Washington DC.
D. That allows you to take your time and go at your own pace.
E. Chinatown Walking Tours are a tour-guided must-see.
F. Some attractions are worth having a tour guide for.
G. The tour guides know what we have never found out on our own.

Once upon a time, there lived a poor but cheerful shoemaker. He was so happy that he sang all day long. The children loved to stand around his window to listen to him.
Next door to the shoemaker lived a rich man. He used to sit up all night to count his gold. In the morning, he went to bed, but he could not sleep because of the sound of the shoemaker’s singing. One day, he thought of a way to stop the singing. He wrote a letter to the shoemaker inviting him over for a cup of tea.
The shoemaker came at once, and to his great surprise, the rich man gave him a bag of gold as a gift. The shoemaker took the bag and thanked the rich man. When he returned home, the shoemaker couldn’t wait to open the bag. He had never seen so much gold in his life! He sat down at his bench and began, carefully, to count it. The children watched through the window.
There was so much there that the shoemaker was afraid to let it out of his sight. So he took it to bed with him. But he could not sleep for worrying about it. So he got out of bed and went to hide it in the attic (阁楼), but he was not sure if that was a good place.
Very early in the morning, he got up and brought his gold down from the attic. He had decided to hide it up the chimney (烟囱) instead. But after breakfast, he thought it would be safer in the chicken house. So he hid it there. But he was still uneasy, and in a little while he dug a hole in the garden and buried his bag of gold in it.
