(22-23八年级下·江苏淮安·期末)Have you ever heard about the story of The Old Man and the Sea It was written by an American writer Hemingway, in 1952. The story is about an old fisherman (渔民) who has been fighting for (与……斗争) a long time with a huge marlin (枪鱼).
The old man went fishing every day, but he hadn’t caught a fish for eighty-four days. In the first forty days, there was a boy with him. The old man taught the boy to fish. But after forty days without a fish, the boy’s parents told him that the old man was unlucky. The boy then was asked to work on another boat.
After the boy left, the old man went fishing alone. One day the old man caught a huge marlin. He was greatly tested. Unluckily, the marlin’s blood attracted a lot of sharks (鲨鱼). The old man was weak but fought against the sharks hard. Finally, he went back with a huge fish skeleton (骨架). Although the old man didn’t bring back the fish, he won.

(22-23八年级下·江苏徐州·期末)Long ago, there lived a King who had eleven sons, and one daughter named Eliza. The eleven brothers wrote with gold pencils. One could see directly that they were princes. Their sister Eliza sat on a little chair made of glass, and had a picture-book which cost half value of the country. The children were particularly well off, but life was not always like this.
Their father married a new Queen who did not love the poor children at all. They could notice this on the very first day. In the whole palace there was a great party, the children were only given some sand in a tea-cup instead of the spare cakes and the roasted apples, and were told that was something good.
The next week the Queen took Eliza into a village, to a farmer and his wife. And she also told the King many bad words about the Princes. After that King did not care about them any longer.
“Fly out into the world and get your own living,” the Queen said to the Princes. “Fly like great birds without a voice.”
But she could not make it so bad for them as she wished. The Princes became eleven beautiful wild swans. With a strange cry they flew out of the palace windows, far over the park and into the sky.
It was quite early morning when they came by the place where their sister Eliza lay asleep. They hovered (盘旋) over the farmer’s house, turned their long necks and flapped (扇动) their wings, but no one heard or saw it. They had to fly on, high up toward the clouds, far away into the wide world. They flew into a great dark forest finally.
Poor little Eliza stood in the farmer’s room and played with a green leaf, for she had no other things to play with. She made a hole in the leaf and looked through it up at the sun. It seemed to her that she saw her brothers’ clear eyes. Each time the warm sun shone upon her face, she thought of all the kisses they gave her.

There was a big box of food. I also took many sharp knives and other tools, the ship’s sails and seven guns.

In front of it, there was a good place to make a home. After a lot of hard work I had a very fine tent. The cave at the back of my tent was a good place to keep my food, so I called it my “kitchen”. Then I told myself that I was lucky—lucky to be alive, lucky to have food and tools and lucky to be young and strong. I said to myself, “I’m going to be on this island for a long time.” So on a long piece of wood I carve (雕刻) these words: I CAME HERE ON 30TH SEPTEMBER 1659. Smart Schoolbag
Forget to pack the books you need into your schoolbag in the morning rush
A schoolboy aged 11 has invented a schoolbag. It tells you which books to pack. A small computer and a scanner (扫描装置) are fixed in the bag. As each book is put into the bag, it is checked by the scanner. If any book is missing, a message will be shown on the computer screen to remind you.

(22-23八年级下·江苏扬州·期末)The world’s largest iceberg (冰山), A23a, was stuck on the ocean floor for more than 30 years. Scientists noticed it began to move at the end of 2023. Now, it has gotten farther from Antarctica (南极洲) and is floating (漂浮) in the open ocean.
A23a is the biggest iceberg in the world. It is more than three times the size of New York City, while the city has an area of about 1,214 square kilometers. A23a stands nearly 400 meters tall, about two-thirds the height of the world’s tallest building. The iceberg formed in 1986 when a large one broke off from an ice shelf in Antarctica and broke into three pieces. While the other two floated away, A23a still stuck on the ocean floor.
Is A23a moving faster because of global warming Scientists don’t think so. “It’s unusual to see an iceberg of this size on the move, so we will keep watching its moving closely,” said British Antarctic Survey glaciologist (冰川学家) Oliver Marsh. However, its movement could still cause some harm. The huge iceberg is now moving towards South Georgia Island in the Atlantic Ocean. If it comes too close to the shore, it could cause inconvenience to the millions of seals, penguins, and seabirds living on the island. For example, penguins and seals may not be able to find food in the open water.
But Marsh believed an iceberg of this size could survive (生存) in the Southern Ocean for quite a long time, even though it’s much warmer. “A23a could make its way farther north up toward South Africa, where it may become a danger to ships,” he said.
32.What happened to A23a recently
A.It was stuck on the ocean floor. B.It has become larger and higher.
C.It moved closer to New York City. D.It is floating away from Antarctica.
33.How big might Iceberg A23a be according to the passage
A.About 3,885 square kilometers. B.About 2,428 square kilometers.
C.About 1,986 square kilometers. D.About 1,214 square kilometers.
34.What are the possible results of the iceberg movement
① It could speed up global warming.
② It could bring danger to shipping.
③ It may cause trouble for animals nearby.
④ It may increase the sea level of the Atlantic Ocean.
A.①② B.②③ C.②④ D.③④
35.Where is this passage probably from
A.A travel guide. B.A research plan. C.A science report. D.A business magazine.
(22-23八年级下·江苏泰州·期末)①Walking slowly out of the classroom by himself to the dining room; taking his lunch; sitting and eating alone at a table of four seats, such moments are pretty normal to be seen on the 14-year-old schoolboy, Peter. He spends most of his school time on his own, which makes his parents worry about him so much.
②His parents’ worries are easy to understand. It is widely accepted that being alone is a symbol of being left out and can bring a lot of trouble. Most people believe teenagers who are usually alone do have few friends and are unable to fit in with other people. At the same time, they are at greater risk (风险) of having mental problems.
③However, a new study by some researchers at Wilmington College, shows that this may not always be true. Whether it is bad for teenagers or not depends on the reasons why teenagers are alone. If it is their choice, it may play an active role in their personal growth.
④According to their study, when teenagers choose to think alone, they put 100% of their attention into what is in their mind and are more likely to experience deeper thoughts and feelings than working with others. They may have a greater chance to create something new. In this way they can better develop their creativity (创造力).
⑤On the other hand, the ongoing noise children’s brains receive every day can put great stress on them and make it hard for them to focus. Being alone lets them shut themselves off from the noisy outside world and think about what’s best for them. Slowly they improve their ability to focus.
⑥As a matter of fact, our culture is always biased (有偏见的) against being alone. Maybe it is the right time for us to rethink about Peter’s situation before we say what’s happening to him.
36.Peter’s parents worry about him so much because ______.
A.he spends most of his time in the dining hall
B.he doesn’t have enough time for his lunch at school
C.he often sits alone to have his lunch in the dining hall
D.he doesn’t enjoy his meal at lunchtime in the dining hall
37.According to the study by the researchers, being alone ______.
A.is often a symbol of loneliness
B.never causes mental problems
C.always improves teenagers’ focus
D.may develop teenagers’creativity
38.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.
39.What may be the writer’s opinion according to the passage
A.Peter spends most of his school time alone.
B.Choosing to be alone is a symbol of being left out.
C.Peter usually spends his time alone to improve his focus.
D.More people will have a deeper understanding of being alone in the future.
