The United Kingdom is a land of natural beauty and history, with many of its iconic attractions discovered through hiking. Now, dust off your boots, plan in accordance with the following routes presented by a survey of senior hikers and an incredible experience will wait for you.
Wales Coastal Path
Wales is the only country in the world that has an official walking path covering its whole borders. The Wales Coastal Path is a footpath stretching 870 miles from Chester to Chepstow. Walking the whole thing might be demanding, but there are plenty of stretches that can be enjoyed over a day or two.
Southwest Coast Path
You need a fair amount of annual leave, a casual 52 days or so, to undertake this in one go. The route runs from Somerset all the way to Dorset, via rugged cliffs, cute fishing villages and surfing spots along the coastline. You can surely jump on to any point as you like, but you can’t afford to miss all the pubs full of jokes and laughter on the way!
Coast to Coast Walk
This long-distance trail isn’t official, but popular in the country, taking hikers from the Irish Sea to the North Sea as it rolls into historic Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire. Following local footpaths, the route takes you through three UK National Parks: the Lakes, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.
Cleveland Way
You’ll want nine days to fully complete this hike, which explores both the North York Moors and the county’s world-famous coastline. Just make sure you allow enough time to properly enjoy spots like Roseberry Topping hill and pick up a gentle afternoon walk at Whitby’s clifftop church.
21. Who will be more interested in the routes

The Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) is currently hosting “The Jim Henson Exhibition: Imagination Unlimited”. The exhibition spotlights Henson’s unique contributions to children’s education, including his creation of the Muppets(布偶).
Henson, born in 1936 in Mississippi, grew up in Maryland. His creative talents were evident when he was a student at high school. He loved cartooning and creating sets for school theater productions. While a freshman at university, Henson made puppets for a local TV station. The station’s producers were so impressed that they asked him to produce his own puppet show. Called Sam and Friends, the program started in 1955. Viewers loved Henson’s playful characters, including an early version of Kermit the Frog.
While at university, Henson majored in home economics. At the time, it was the only major that offered classes in sewing and textiles(纺织品). Henson not only honed his creative skills at university, but he was also good at marketing and business. “He was an entrepreneur who happened to get into puppetry,” said Deborah Wood, MCHC’s learning manager.
In 1959, Henson married Jane Nebel, whom he had met at university. The couple established Muppets Inc, which later became the Jim Henson Company. It was there that Focus Bert, Emie, Miss Piggy, and other Muppets were created for Sesame Street, a popular children’s television program. Generations of children around the world have grown up watching and learning from the Muppets.
Henson, who died in 1990, created not just the Muppets, but also films, TV commercials, variety shows, and more. The exhibition show s every aspect of his career. This includes some lesser-known works, including The Cube, a short experimental film that was nominated(提名) for an Academy Award.
Visitors also get a chance to appreciate Henson’s creative process and inventiveness through hands-on displays. They can even make their own Muppets. “For me, I think the really powerful message of this exhibition is the fact that it covers Henson’s whole life and his whole career,” said Chloe Green, public programs manager at the MCHC.

The words “caring” and “empathetic”(共情的) aren’t ones normally associated with technology. Yearsley, an Australian entrepreneur who is expert in artificial intelligence (AI), is trying to change that.
Yearsley is the founder of Akin, a robotics startup that currently uses a tablet-based system to help users manage the tasks related to home life, whether that’s planning meals or reminding you to pay your cell phone bill. Current home devices made by Google or Amazon or Apple use predictive Al to track patterns, strengthen behaviors and manipulate(操控) buying decisions, some of which, she assumes, are questionable or just unhealthy.
In contrast, the AI that she is developing will be designed to run the human home, encouraging healthful decisions such as taking a nightly walk, refilling the fridge and supporting social interactions like lunches or birthday celebrations with friends. “It’s the hardest AI I have ever built for it’s a complex system,” Yearsley says.
Yearsley began developing the Akin technology in 2017, when she realized the need to better manage the home is hugely ignored. Besides, she realized that women unequally bear the burden of household work. A United Nations’ report estimates that women do 2.6 times the amount of unpaid care and domestic work that men do, or close to 30 hours per week in the U. S. alone.
While Yearsley pictures an army of robots someday helping with routine homemade tasks, the first display for Akin will take time and money. Akin has received some early seed money from a handful of investors, and was recently selected as a finalist for tech giant LG Nova’s Mission for the Future program, an annual challenge that seeks to identify businesses having potential to improve life and lead society into the future.
28. What might the Akin’s AI system suggest
A. Consuming more drinks to enjoy yourself. B. Staying up late working to make more money.
C. Purchasing products that may attract you. D. Spending more time staying with your family.
29. What made Yearslcy develop the Akin’s AI system
A. Heavy burden of housewives. B. Akin’s becoming a finalist for a program.
C. Financial support from investors. D. The high cost of current home devices.
30. What can be used to describe the Akin’s Al system
A. Thoughtful and innovative. B. Unstable and insecure.
C. Questionable and unhealthy. D. Mature and ideal.
31. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To compare two companies’ I systems. B. To introduce a futuristic AI system.
C. To call on people to care about housewives. D. To seek support for an Al expert.
D
Two Bristol policemen, Jon Owen and David Morgan, have organized a six-a-side football league(联赛) for teenagers in Patchway, one of the poorest parts of the city. Police in several parts of Britain host similar football leagues or competitions, but usually the aim is just to keep teens occupied, and build confidence between teenagers and the police. Jon and David, however, had a better idea.
They have introduced a new system to the football league. Teams score point s for winning their matches, but lose points if any team member does anything he shouldn’t off the field or at school! Teams score ten points for winning a match, and five if they draw;but if any player is arrested, the team loses ten points. If a member is caught doing an act of small crime, the team loses five points. The result has been spectacular; since the football league started, crime in the area has fallen by 20%.
Peer pressure is a strong force, especially among young people. Almost everyone can remember a moment when they felt compelled(强迫的) to do something because their friends were doing it, or to buy something because their friends had bought it. In the age of the Internet, peer pressure is stronger than ever. Today peer pressure has become a more serious problem for young people. Phones and personal website accounts become increasingly influential among teenagers because they can know everything about their peers and copy each other’s behavior.
Although peer pressure is usually seen as a bad influence, it can also produce positive results. If your children’s behavior is greatly influenced by their peers, reassure them that they don’t need to follow along with everyone else to make friends. Instead, staying true to their unique personalities will set them up for success later on.
32. Why was Jon Owen and David Morgan’s system successful
A. The football league kept teenagers occupied.
B. The football league built teenagers’ confidence.
C. The football results were linked to teenagers’ social behavior.
D. The football results encouraged teenagers to respect each other.
33. What makes peer pressure stronger for young people today
A. The ranking system at school. B. The competition in the job market.
C. The popularity of social media. D. The strict management from parents.
34. Why does the author write the last paragraph
A. To draw a comparison. B. To make an argument.
C. To provide an example. D. To offer a suggestion.
35. What is the best title of the text
A. Peer pressure makes sports players play better B. Peer pressure cuts teens’ crime rate
C. How to deal with peer pressure at school D. Why peer pressure always has negative results
第二节(共5题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Teamwork refers to a small or large group of people collaborating together efficiently towards a common goal. Being a master of one or a jack-of-all-trades in today’s world does not bring about success if you are unable to work as part of a team. 36 So team work is important.
Teamwork benefits from different perspectives. A team environment allows people to bring their diverse opinions on problem solving, which in turn increases their success in arriving at solutions. If you feel a sense of safe connection with your teammates, you will be more likely to confidently share your opinions without fear of judgement. 37
Teamwork can boost efficiency. One person working on a project is always going to take longer to complete it. Efficiency rules when work is appropriately divided within a team, responsibilities shared. 38 Good teamwork also increases group outcomes.
39 People have their own skills and strengths. When the whole team works as a unit, everyone has a chance to gain new knowledge and skills from each other. This process leads to resource building and let the team become better equipped to wrestle with new challenges.
Teamwork brings an expanded sense of accomplishment. When a team works on a project as one unit, the sense of achievement the member experience expands beyond personal achievements. 40 This is yet another reason why developing teamwork is worth everyone’s effort.
A. Teamwork leads to learning.
B. The psychological safety in teams results in more creativity.
C. Now, most of our work includes communicating with others.
D. And tasks are more likely to be finished within a set time period.
E. Teamwork can be effective in building great work relationships.
F. Team members encourage and support each other to improve work quality.
G. It satisfies the human desires for belonging and contributing to something greater.

She was six years old when I met her on the beach near where I live. I drive to this beach whenever the world begins to close in on me. She was building a sandcastle and looked up, her eyes as blue as the sea. “Hello,” she said. I answered with a nod, not really in the mood to bother with a small child. I was depressed: my life seemed completely out of balance.
“What’s your name ” She wouldn’t give up. “Ruth.” I answered. “Mine’s Wendy... I’m six.” She smiled, “Nice to meet you, Miss Ruth. Do you want to play Maybe we can build something together. You’ll be happy!” She looked at me cagerly, waiting for my answer.
I just couldn’t refuse this lovely creature. I asked her, “Why don’t you go to school ” “I don’t go to school. Mommy says we’re on vacation.” She chattered little girl talk as we built the sandcastle. When I left for home, Wendy said it had been a happy day. Feeling surprisingly better, I smiled at her and agreed. She point ed toward a row of summer cottages and told me she lives there.
Three weeks later, I rushed to my beach in a state of near panic. I was in no mood to even greet Wendy when Wendy caught up with me, “I’d rather be alone today.” She seems unusually pale and out of breath. “Why ” she asked. I turned to her, shouting. “Because my mother died!” “Oh,” she said quietly, “then this is a bad day.” “Yes, go away!” “Did it hurt when she died ” “Of course!” I shouted. She didn’t say anything more, tears rolling down her face.
A month or so after that, when I went to the beach, she wasn’t there. Feeling guilty, ashamed and admitting to myself I missed her, I went up to the cottage and knocked at the door.

Our school will launch a project of collecting used books on campus to help the children of a rural school next month.
To make the most of second-hand books and go all out to help the children in need as well, the Students’ Union of our school has drafted out this activity. We will put up posters and hand out leaflets which specify the kinds of books that are wanted and the way the books are collected. Gently-used ones are preferred and the brand - new are also accepted. All the books will be sent to a school in a remote mountainous region to help it set up a reading room.
We hope all the students and teachers will contribute greatly to this significant project.

续写参考答案:
A drawn-looking(憔悴的) young woman with red and swollen eyes opened the door: “Hello,” I said, “I’m Ruth Peterson. I missed your little girl and wondered where she was.” “Oh yes, Miss Ruth, please come in. Wendy talked of you so much,” She said in a very low voice, “Wendy died last week because of leukemia...” Absolutely astonished, I couldn’t believe my ears and couldn’t even breathe, my mind racing for something, anything, to say to this miserable young woman. But I couldn’t force a single word, tears welling up in my eyes.
“She left something for you,” her mum’s voice trembled(颤抖) and she handed me an envelope. I opened the envelope with blank mind. Inside was a drawing in bright colors: a yellow beach, a blue sea and us. Underneath was carefully printed: BE HAPPY. I took Wendy’s mother in my arms. “I’m so sorry, I’m sorry...” I whispered again and again, and we wept together. The precious little picture is framed now and hangs in my study. It’s the gift of love. The two simple words speak to me of harmony, courage and undermanding love.

Text 10
Nowadays it’s become more and more difficult to know what information is real and what is not.
Luckily, there’ re three ways for you to check the information! You can check the website address. Most trusted web addresses end in. com, . edu or with the code for the country being reported, such as. jp or. us.(18) While even these site s can make mistakes, they will correct them. Another way is to look for it on other websites. Check to see if other websites, especially trusted ones, are reporting on the same story. If a website has made up a story that is not real, then that site may be the only one reporting on it.(19) Fact-checking websites can also be quite helpful. The last way is to check the date.(20) Sometimes a true story will be reported as the late news, but it actually happened months or even years ago. Then the persons in the story, like the president of one country, might not be the one at this time.
