五、阅读理解。
请阅读下面的非连续性文本,按要求完成所给任务。
One of the biggest challenges in communi cation is saying “no” when you need to.Often we promise to do things even when we should refuse. This leads to stress as we break our promise, and pushes ourselves to do more than we can.We then feel bad for not keeping our words and losing trust for not keeping our promise.
Do you say “no”to your friends?
Charmer:Never.I come from India. In our country, refusing people of a higher social class is considered disrespectful and discouraged.
Judy:No,I don't.I am afraid that every time I do this,I will disappoint (使……失望) someone, makethem angry and hurt their feelings. The person might think I am unkind or rude.
John:Yes,I do.My value does not depend on how much I do for other people. And learning to say “no”has been one of the best things I have done for myself.
Learning how to say no is a great favor you can do to yourself. You'll reduce your work overload (过量) and your level of stress, and you'll have time to do what really matters to you.Remember that the best way to learn how to say no is to practice more.
But in saying no,you still need some skills. The U S A method works very well here.It stands for:Understanding:It is important to express to the other persons that you understand the inconvenience they will experience. If they don't feel your understanding, they could become upset and difficult.Show understanding with a sincere statement (表述).
Situation:Explain exactly why you will have to refuse that person's request.
Action:It is acceptable to tell the person whom you are refusing, what you can and will do.
In most cases, when you show empathy (同情) with an understanding statement, explain the situation, and tell the person what you can do,you will appease (安抚) that person. You will effectively and politely say “no” without causing anger and unhappiness.
24.How may people feel when they break the promise
25.What can we infer from the words of Judy? Why does John say no to others
They may feel bad/sorry.
Judy wants to be kind and polite./Judy doesn't want to make other people angry or hurt their feelings or make them disappointed.Because he thinks that his value does not depend on how much he does for other people.
26.What's the best way to learn how to say no

Every English learner needs to know how to ask for something in English. There are a number of ways to do this.If you know someone has something, you can ask for it with a polite question. If you don't know,it's possible to ask for something with a yes or no question.Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don't say “Give me that”,but ask kindly as the following examples,“Do you have a pen I could borrow?” “Is there any wine?” “Did you buy any bread?”
If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with “could”,“may” or “might”.It's also possible to use “can” in some special situations. In the past,“can” was not used when people asked for something, but meant ability. In the UK,people mainly use “Can you lend me...?” or “Can I have...?”
It's common to use “Could you lend/hand/give...?” You can also use “May/Can I borrow...?” “Could/Can you lend me...?” “May I have...?” “Could you hand/give me...?” Do not begin a sentence with “please”,but you can add “please” at the end of the sentence to be polite.

请阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,在方框内的缩写文章中,填入与短文意思最符合的单词。每空一词。
In our life, there are many situations in which we use different languages.“How are you?” is a friendly way that people greet each other in Western countries. But “How are you?” is also a very unusual question. It's direct, but it doesn't have a real answer. The speaker who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”,even if his friend isn't fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn't really a question and “Fine” isn't really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
Sometimes, people don't say what they mean either. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?”,the other person might be thinking,“No,I disagree.I think you are wrong...” But it isn't very polite to disagree so strongly,so the other person might say,“I'm not sure.” It is a nicer way.
People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says “I have to go now.” Often, the person who wants to stop suggests ending up talking with the sentences like “Someone's at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real,or they might not.Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk anymore, but it isn't polite to say directly. The excuses sound more polite,so it doesn't hurt the other person.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea,or finishing a talk, people often don't say exactly what they are thinking. It's an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it's all part of the game of language.
