It was 1963 in the Toronto suburb. I was eight years old and hockey (冰球) -crazy. My next-to-zero skills had not stopped my passion for the game. The players of the great hockey club Toronto Maple Leafs were of course my heroes, and their posters and photos covered the walls of my room.
There is always some price to pay for maintaining a love. I raised funds in an old-fashioned way, selling something the public could actually sink their teeth into. I joined the local annual event — Margaret’s Doughnuts (甜甜圈) to sell doughnuts, which offered choices of honey-glazed or chocolate-glazed.
Door-to-door I went, notebook in hand to record. I sold dozens of dozens; hardly a soul turned me down. My notebook was almost full, and my stomach was almost empty when I went up the last house on the south side.
I rang the doorbell and went over my speech while staring at the screen door. Suddenly, the door opened. My unforgettable memory was looking up from a large pair of fuzzy slippers, way up, to the face staring down. I stood there speechless for what seemed 10 years, opening and closing my mouth like a fish out of water. Collecting my calmness, but still unable to go into doughnut-promoting overdrive, I told him something he seemed have already known and he replied with a nod and a smile.
I have an unclear memory of murmuring through my speech “Please-buy-some-doughnuts”, and then a vivid memory of him taking the notebook from my hand. I followed with new information — that we shared our given name. With pride from our first-name-basis farewells, I flew home holding the notebook tightly to my chest.
The next morning before the school bell, I cautiously showed off the precious paper. It is surely mine alone to claim: I sold a dozen doughnuts to Tim Horton, one of my most respected players who lived a mere three blocks away!

As the world tries to quit fossil fuels, there’s a lot of focus on renewable energy sources like wind and solar. But one very promising source of energy comes from deep inside the Earth. And old oil wells could help greatly in developing this power.
“Geothermal” power is based on heat that comes from deep in the earth. ‘Geo’ means Earth and ‘thermal’ means ‘heat’. Earth’s core, deep in the center of the planet, is about as hot as the sun’s surface and is expected to stay that way for billions of years. In some places, where the rocks have lots of holes, this heat comes out in different kinds of hot springs. Humans have been using the Earth’s heat for hundreds of years.
In general, though, geothermal energy requires drilling (钻) deep into the Earth. There are different ways of collecting the heat and using it. But these deep geothermal wells can easily produce huge amounts of heat and electricity for hundreds of years—all without polluting. Solar power depends on the sun, and wind power depends on wind. That means they’re not constant. But geothermal sources can produce power day and night all year long.
But geothermal energy also has a big defect — drilling down farther, which can lead to greater heat and more powerful energy sources, to create a geothermal plant is hard, and it costs a lot of money. Now people are starting to explore a clever idea that could make geothermal energy far cheaper: using oil wells that are already drilled.
Oil wells are usually used for a few decades before running dry. Then they are capped and left unused. Now, the US Department of Energy is encouraging scientists and companies to use existing oil wells to create geothermal energy. They have recently given out $8.4 million to four geothermal projects that will work on this technology.
If these projects work well, they can be used at thousands of old oil wells around the US.
28.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The advantages of the geothermal energy.
B.The explanation of the geothermal power.
C.The reasons for exploring the Earth’s heat.
D.The present application of the Earth’s heat.
29.What is the positive side of energy from geothermal sources
A.It’s always available and eco-friendly.
B.It’s very cheap and non-polluting.
C.It’s quite powerful and widely-used.
D.It’s multifunctional and pretty clean.
30.What does the underlined word “defect” mean in paragraph 4
A.Potential. B.Channel.
C.Imperfection. D.Innovation.
31.Which is a better method to create power from the Earth’s heat
A.Employing active oil wells.
B.Developing some hot springs.
C.Drilling deeper into the earth.
D.Using unused old oil wells.
D
Yellow fever began to spread in Brazil in 2016, severely threatening the golden lion tamarin, a little monkey living in the rainforest of southeastern Brazil, whose population was small even before the outbreak. So, scientists created a vaccine (疫苗) to protect the monkeys. But, it is a new idea to vaccinate animals. Historically, conservationists have believed that humans should not interfere directly with wildlife. A traditional saying in the world of conservation work is “Leave it as is.”
However, Tony Goldberg, a scientist and animal doctor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, believes in vaccinating wild animals when possible. “Some people say we shouldn’t touch nature. But really, there are no unspoiled natural habitats left.” he said . “This epidemic moved very quickly from north to south, across the country — no wildlife does that. It’s people. They cross vast distances in buses, trains, planes. They bring the disease with them. We realized that in five years, we could lose the entire population if we did nothing.”
The vaccine led to antibodies in the tested monkeys and caused no harm, the scientists found. So far, about 300 have been vaccinated and are reported to be doing well. Tests show that more than 90 percent of the monkeys have immunity or resistance to the virus since vaccination.
The outbreak of yellow fever is no longer a big problem for the monkeys, and their population is starting to come back. But even with the success of the vaccine program, scientists are still not sure about creating vaccines for other animals. Jacob Negrey, a biologist who studies monkeys, wondered about unpredictable effects of such wildlife treatment. He explained that you might create a treatment that helps one kind of animal but hurts another.
32. What caused monkeys to get infected with yellow fever
A. Human activities.
B. Loss of their habitat.
C. Convenient transportation.
D. The development of Science and technology.
33. What happened to vaccinated monkeys
A. They are resistant to all viruses.
B. They are no longer endangered animals.
C. There is an increase in their population.
D. Some of them are harmed by the vaccine.
34. What’s Jacob’s attitude to creating vaccine for other animals
A. Indifferent. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Neutral.
35. What’s the best title of this passage
A. Vaccinating animals: a heated debate B. Yellow fever: a threat to monkeys
C. Protecting monkeys: a top priority D. Vaccine: a blessing for monkeys

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse sill, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened ” Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.” “Just two of us.” complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other. Suddenly, an idea flashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes, that’s the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.

第二节:(满分25分)
One possible version:
Quickly finishing their dinner, the pair went upstairs and started planning. Maria and Peter decided to take advantage of the Internet. “Maybe we can write an article to arouse people’s awareness.” Maria proposed. “Good idea! We can also make a video!” Peter added. The next few hours witnessed their heated discussion and growing confidence in a clean and beautiful coast. The next day, they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing plastic bags lying on the beach and floating in the sea. Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the present situation of the beach and asking people to take part in the clean-up.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on WeChat. To their amazement, their post went viral online immediately. Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that numerous people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to join in their clean-up. More and more people came to the beach to collect plastic bags and they also appealed to others to avoid throwing or using plastic bags. A year later, with their joint and continuous effort, the coast regained its beauty and Maria and Peter regained their long-awaited pleasure.
