Anand Malligavad, known as the “Lake Man” in India, is a mechanical engineer from Bengaluru. He has spent his life studying ancient techniques for keeping lakes clean. Malligavad has successfully restored many lakes, covering a total surface area of 800 acres. These lakes now hold 106 million gallons of water, and the groundwater level in those regions has increased by eight feet.
It was in 2017, and he was out for a walk with colleagues when he fell into a smelly, dirty lake. Then the very next day, he asked his company if they would fund the restoration of the 36-ac re lake. However, they were uncertain whether Malligavad could do this. Determined to succeed, Malligavad took it upon himself to study the history of the lake and familiarize himself with various lake restoration methods. Four months later, Malligavad received funding from his company, which enabled him to start working on this project in the city of Bengaluru.
With the aid of hundreds of volunteers, they removed the waste and opened the channel. Malligavad then adopted the ancient Chola method to build mud walls that channel the extra rainwater into the lakes for agricultural use. It took them just 45 days and then they waited for the rains. Six months later, when the rainy season came, he was out boating on a fresh, clean lake. “When I saw the lake, I felt younger, and I wanted to jump into it,”Malligavad said.
Since this first win, Malligavad has not stopped. He has created a non-profit organization called The lake Revivers Collective. “All I have is a sense of urgency that if we don't repair the damage we've already caused,” he said, “it's going to end badly for all of us. Water shortage is a major problem in Bengaluru, Water tankers(水罐车) must drive in to meet the population’s needs.” His methods help to solve the problem, and even attract wildlife.

A. He lives by fishing in many lakes.
B. He is devoted to restoring lakes.
C. He is good at boating on lakes.
D. He has created the newest ways of cleaning up lakes.
25. How did Malligavad respond to his company's doubt
A. By discontinuing the restoration project.
B. By seeking help from other companies.
C. By doing research into the lake to win support.
D. By introducing the history of the lake to the public.
26. How can we best describe the approach applied in Bengaluru
A. Practical and fruitful. B. Challenging and dissatisfying.
C. Traditional but useless. D. Creative but costly.
27. What inspired Malligavad to start the non-profit organization
A. A serious lack of water resources.
B. His passion for wildlife protection.
C. The wish to attract public attention.
D. His desire to help purchase water tankers.

Scientists at Northwestern University are doing a dream job— they coached people in a lucid dream (a state where people are aware that they are currently dreaming) and then questioned people who were deep in dream-filled rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The crazy part Those dreamers were actually answering basic questions via eye movements.
In this study, the researchers had subjects move their eyes back and forth to count out numbers, for example, eight minus six. The subjects moved their eyes back and forth twice, according to the instructions the scientists gave them while they were awake.
The study just involved six people out of 36 who were able to both have lucid dreams and register correct answers to questions from inside. But what if these six subjects are exceptional and the findings don't reflect a larger population
If the subjects in the study were not truly in REM sleep, it would decrease the reliability of the findings. Besides, another problem is that REM sleep must be stabilized because even the eye movements themselves can wake people up sometimes. To overcome these two potential problems, the scientists used their polysomnography(多导睡眠图) set-up which helped them get an all-sided assessment of various physiological parameters(生理参数) during sleep.
“Sleep has classically been defined as unresponsiveness to external environmental inputs ——and that feature is still typically part of the definition today,” explains Benjamin Baird, a sleep researcher. “This work pushes us to rethink about some of those fundamental definitions about the nature of sleep itself, and what's possible in sleep.”
The idea of learning during sleep has long been unrealistic. But the research indicates that people might really be able to study while asleep in a way that could help their waking life, like memorizing facts or visualizing high performance sports or music. “In addition, dreaming could also be used to solve problems and promote creativity,” the researchers conclude. “The next moonshot ideas could be produced with a method that can combine the creative advantages of dreaming with the logical advantages of waking.”
28. What does the surprising phenomenon in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. People can remember their dreams very vividly.
B. People can predict future events in their dreams.
C. People are sensitive to some sounds even in dreams.
D. People can respond to the outside world while dreaming.
29. What role did the scientists' polysomnography set-up play
A. To analyze the subjects' dream content.
B. To help the subjects stabilize their dreams.
C. To control the duration of the subjects' sleep.
D. To measure and confirm the subjects' sleep state.
30. What does Benjamin Baird think of the new research
A. It challenges traditional understandings of sleep.
B. It confirms the necessity of studying human sleep.
C. It proves the impact of environment on sleep quality.
D. It shows the weakness of current sleep monitoring methods.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly discuss
A. A further explanation of the research methods.
B. Potential applications of the research findings.
C. A reasonable doubt about the research process.
D. Supporting evidence for the research results.

On the crowded supermarket shelves, food products try to attract attention, using packaging and labels to clinch the deal. Around 72% of American consumers say that product packaging influences their purchase decisions. Food companies are aware of this and understand that it applies to packaging design as well as the message conveyed through labels.
Louis Biscotti, the National Leader for Food Beverage Services Group, writes that when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) update d its policy on the nutrition facts label for packaged foods in 2020, food and drink companies found they could use the labels on their packaging to provide nutritional and other data to drive increase in sales. The information on the FDA labels and what they packed onto their labels and packaging greatly increased sales. Many consumers surveyed were more likely to buy products with “natural” labels.
A new report takes a look at the popularity of the “natural” claim on food packaging and it's eye-opening. “Food suppliers can use the label that claims the food is ‘natural’ at a relatively low cost because regulatory(监管的) agencies treat the claim as meaning nothing artificial was added and that the product was hardly processed,” the authors explain.
While that is certainly valuable information to know, the problem is in consumers' understanding of what “natural” means. Studies show that people think a product labeled as “natural” delivers benefits far beyond what it actually does, with most consumers mistakenly linking health and environmental care qualities to food with “natural” labels. In a 2022 survey, 86% of people reported that they purchased products with “natural” labels because they believed the labels indicated better-than-standard animal welfare and higher environmental care production practices.
That might simply seem discouraging as food producers are taking advantage of consumers' innocence to increase sales. But the more serious problem is how this harms food producers who are actually meeting the standards for stricter labeling. These producers are doing good but ending up at a competitive disadvantage if consumers consider foods labeled “natural” as alike.
As a consequence, any health and environmental care benefits that might have been realized from consumers choosing products that matched their preferences could be lost.
32. What does the underlined word “clinch” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Secure. B. Standardize. C. Close. D. Cut.
33. What was the consequence of the FDA's 2020 policy on packaged foods
A. It helped consumers make careful choices.
B. It led to a sharp price rise in packaged foods.
C. Companies found new chances to increase sales.
D. Companies were forced to make more healthy products.
34. Why does the food with the “natural” label gain favor with consumers
A. It has a better taste. B. It is at a lower price.
C. It comes in a great many varieties. D. It is thought to be healthy and green.
35. What's the text mainly about
A. Label design is important for food companies.
B. The message on food labels may be misleading.
C. Customers should check the label before purchasing.
D. “Natural” labels should be added to food packaging.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When you breathe, you take in oxygen into your blood. 36 Then the oxygen fuels chemical reactions that give your muscles energy. You breathe more quickly and deeply while exercising because your muscles need more energy to work harder.
VO max is the maximum volume(V) of oxygen (O) your body can process to produce energy. It measures how much oxygen you breathe in while exercising as hard as you can. It's a common indicator to understand your fitness level. The more oxygen you can breathe in, the more energy your body can use. 37
To measure your VO max, you'll likely need to visit a lab or a testing center. You'll put a mask over your face. 38 While wearing it you'll perform certain exercise as intensely as possible. If you can't get to a lab or a testing center, you can estimate your VO max through some digital watches.
When measuring your VO max, you can measure your “absolute VO max”, which is the total volume of oxygen consumed per minute. You can also measure “relative VO max”, the volume of oxygen consumed per kilogram of body weight and per minute. Both provide valuable information. 39 That's because it takes account of a person's body weight.
40 Your VO max can increase through high-intensity interval(间隔) training. You perform an exercise as hard as you can for a short amount of time, rest for another short period, and then repeat for multiple rounds of different exercises. You can also turn to low-intensity training. You perform a less intense exercise with fewer or no rest times during the session.
A. Your heart pumps the blood into your muscles.
B. It's to catch the amount of oxygen in your breath.
C. If your VO max is low, how can you improve it
D. Higher VO max usually means better physical fitness.
E. What types of training especially require high VO max
F. The mask keeps substances affecting the intensity of oxygen out.
G. However, the latter represents a more accurate picture of your physical state.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One year, I was burned by hot water, which left me with some permanent, ugly scars on my arms. Growing up, I tried to hide those scars. Even in the hot summer, I'd wear shirts that had long sleeves which could cover all my scars. I feared being laughed at by other kids, although many loved me because I was nice and kind. I saw myself as different.
At 12 years old, I went to junior high school. On the first day of school, I found that we had swimming class every week and we were required to change into swimsuits in the open locker room before the class. This meant I would have to undress before the other girls. They would see my scars.
“Would you feel better if I talked to your teacher to see whether you could change your clothes after the other girls are gone ” my mother asked. “Yeah,” I said quietly. “I'm afraid they’ll laugh at me.”
My mother looked at me. Even though she may have been hurting for me inside, she didn't let me see it. The next day, my mother met with my teacher and they worked out a solution: I would wait until the other girls got dressed and went to the class, and then I would put on my swimsuit and be allowed to be late. I was relieved.
But that night as I lay in bed, I felt like a coward(胆小鬼). I didn't want to be different and to be picked on because I was allowed to do things the other girls didn't get to do. It was then that I knew what I had to do.
The next morning, as I got ready for school, I told my mother, “I think I might go ahead and put on my swimsuit like everyone else. I don't want to be different.” Surprised, she hugged me and said, “I'm proud of you. But Stacie, if you change your mind, I'll support you.”
That day, I felt nervous because I knew that I was going to change my clothes in the presence of other girls for the first time.
注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
“Okay, girls, it's time to go in and put on your swimsuits!” the teacher said and blew her whistle.
To my surprise, they appeared concerned and one girl asked gently, “Do the scars hurt ”

“Okay, girls, it's time to go in and put on your swimsuits!” the teacher said and blew her whistle. My heart skipped a beat as I realized here came the moment I had been afraid of. Taking a deep breath, I stood up and walked towards the locker room with other girls, with my swimsuit clutched tightly in my hand. As I entered, I felt as if all eyes were focused on me, though they were concentrating on their own business. I attempted to run away but I stopped and forced myself to calm down, because I did not want to be a coward. I summoned up my courage and began to change into my swimsuit, my scars fully exposed for the first time in front of my peers. Seeing my scars, some girls were curious and gathered around me.
To my surprise, the girls appeared concerned and one girl asked gently, “Do the scars hurt ” I looked up, surprised by her kindness, and shook my head. “No, they don't hurt,” I replied softly and then told my story. To my relief, no one laughed at or made fun of me. Instead, several girls offered words of encouragement, telling me how brave I was. I felt a surge of gratitude and confidence wash over me. Then we took the swimming class together, talking and laughing. None of them paid attention to my scars. From that day on, I no longer wore shirts with long sleeves to hid my scars and I didn't take myself differently. Though my scars may have been permanent, they have became a symbol of my strength and courage, a reminder of the challenges I had overcome.

Others think it was created when ancient religious people hold different ceremonies. But in my pinion, when ancient people worked together, they needed something to unify their actions. So music began to exist.
W: That sounds reasonable. So why do so many people love music nowadays
M: People love music since it helps us relax and express our feelings. So it's often used in medical treatment, festival activities films and TV works. But for ordinary people, the widest use of music is for fun instead of for money. Well, do you like music
W: Of course, I do. Thank you for accepting my interview, Professor Johnson.
M: You're welcome.

W: Good morning, everyone! Today, I want to talk about a Chinese legend in the field of sports —Lang Ping.
Born in Tianjin in 1960, Lang Ping showed a gift for sports at 6. After seven-year practice, Lang Ping joined a volleyball class to get regular training. At the age of 16, she was selected for the Beijing volleyball team. Two years later, she was selected to join the national training team. As a player, Lang Ping brought not only an honor but also glory to China. In 1981, she won the first gold me dal of the 3rd World Cup with the China women's national volleyball team. In 1982, she won the 9th World Women's Volleyball Championship with the Chinese national team. In 1984, she won the gold medal with the Chinese national team at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. As a coach, she led the Chinese national team to medals at world championships as well as the Olympic Games. Rarely has a sports team in China gotten praise and admiration as much as the China women's national volleyball team. As a sports lover, I want to follow in her footsteps and become a professional volleyball player. I'll work hard to make my dream come true.
That's all. Thanks for your listening
